Day 1: A Day of Discovery in Amalfi: History, Art, and Lemon Delights
Explore Amalfi's Duomo, cloisters, and paper-making history. A day of culture, cuisine, and coastal charm on the Amalfi Coast.
Amalfi Unveiled
As our small group of friends and I began our Amalfi Coast adventure, I knew this trip would be special. Leaving behind the familiar Toronto skyline for the sun-kissed shores of Italy felt like stepping into a dream. From the moment we landed in Naples and started our drive along the winding coastal roads, the scenery was nothing short of breathtaking. The air was filled with the scent of lemon blossoms, and the views of the Tyrrhenian Sea were mesmerizing. I was especially excited to share this experience with my friends, hoping they would fall in love with the Amalfi Coast as much as I anticipated I would. Today marked the beginning of our exploration, and I couldn't wait to immerse ourselves in the history, art, and flavors of Amalfi.
Our first day in Amalfi was a whirlwind of cultural immersion and culinary delights, a perfect introduction to the charm of this coastal gem. The mild April weather, with temperatures hovering around a comfortable 16°C (61°F), made it ideal for exploring the town on foot. The sun was shining, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of the sea and citrus, creating an atmosphere that was both invigorating and relaxing.
We started our morning with a hearty breakfast at Terrazza Duomo. Finding a spot with a view is always a priority for me, and this place did not disappoint. The cafe is perfectly situated in front of the Duomo di Amalfi, providing an awesome view. Sipping on Italian coffee while gazing at the Duomo di Amalfi was the perfect way to start our day. The breakfast was delicious, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home.

Duomo di Amalfi: A Step Back in Time
Our first stop was the Duomo di Amalfi, also known as the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea. This iconic cathedral dominates the Piazza Duomo with its striking façade and intricate architectural details. Climbing the monumental staircase with its 62 steps was a bit of a workout, but the view from the top was well worth the effort. The Duomo's history dates back to the 9th century when Amalfi was a powerful maritime republic. Over the centuries, it has undergone several renovations, resulting in a fascinating blend of Romanesque, Gothic, Byzantine, and Arab-Norman influences.

Inside, the cathedral is just as impressive, with ornate frescoes, marble columns, and a sense of spiritual grandeur. The bronze doors, cast in Constantinople in 1057, are a testament to Amalfi's historical wealth and prestige. We spent a good hour exploring the various chapels and admiring the artwork, each piece telling a story of Amalfi's rich past. The crypt, which houses the relics of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Amalfi, was particularly moving. The cool, quiet atmosphere provided a moment of reflection and connection to the cathedral's spiritual significance.

Chiostro del Paradiso: A Tranquil Escape
Next, we visited the Chiostro del Paradiso, or Cloister of Paradise, located just to the left of the Duomo. This Moorish-style cloister, built in 1266, offered a tranquil escape from the bustling streets of Amalfi. Originally built as a cemetery for Amalfi's noble families, the cloister features 120 marble columns supporting slender Arabic arches around a central garden. The remnants of 13th-century frescoes added to the cloister's charm, depicting biblical scenes and historical events.

Walking through the Chiostro del Paradiso felt like stepping into another world. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the beautiful architecture and lush greenery, made it a perfect spot for contemplation and relaxation. It was fascinating to learn about the cloister's history and its role in Amalfi's cultural heritage. The architecture is a mix of styles, reflecting the interaction between different cultures that have shaped Amalfi's history. The Arab-Norman design is particularly striking, showcasing the influence of the East on the region during the medieval period.
Museo della Carta: Unveiling Amalfi's Paper-Making Legacy
In the afternoon, we ventured to the Museo della Carta, or Paper Museum, located in the Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills). This museum is housed in a 13th-century paper mill and is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Amalfi's long history of paper making. Amalfi paper, known as *bambagina*, was highly prized for its quality and was a major export commodity during the Middle Ages. I remember learning about Amalfi's paper-making history back in Toronto, and I was excited to see it firsthand.

The museum tour was fascinating. We learned about the traditional paper-making process, from collecting raw materials to creating the final product. The museum houses restored machinery and equipment, including ancient wooden hammers and presses, all powered by the waters of the Canneto stream. We even got to witness a live demonstration of paper making, which was both educational and entertaining. It was incredible to see how much skill and effort went into creating each sheet of paper.
The museum also has exhibits showcasing the history and significance of paper making in Amalfi, including displays of ancient manuscripts, watermarked paper, and various uses of paper in daily life and culture. The gift shop was a treasure trove of handmade paper products, and I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs, including a beautiful notebook made from Amalfi paper.
A Taste of Amalfi: Culinary Delights
No trip to Italy is complete without indulging in the local cuisine, and Amalfi was no exception. For lunch, we dined at Ristorante L'Abside, located in Piazza dei Dogi. This family-run establishment offers a rustic Italian atmosphere with vaulted ceilings and white stucco walls. We chose to sit outside, where we could soak in the lively atmosphere of the piazza. I opted for the lobster linguine, while my friends tried the mussel soup and the catch of the day. All the dishes were fresh and flavorful, showcasing the best of Amalfi's culinary traditions. The restaurant also offers a selection of Campania wines, which perfectly complemented our meal.

In the evening, we had dinner at Da Gemma, a celebrated restaurant known for its seafood delicacies and traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist. The restaurant has a warm and inviting ambiance, with a decor that blends rustic charm with contemporary elegance. We sat on the terrace overlooking the Mediterranean, enjoying the breathtaking views. For dinner, I tried the spaghetti alle vongole, while my friends opted for the grilled fish and the signature seafood pasta. The food was exceptional, and the attentive staff made our dining experience unforgettable.

Da Gemma has been around since 1872 and is known for its fresh, local ingredients. The chef, Salvatore Milano, has trained in renowned kitchens, and his creations are impressive. I'm glad we made a reservation ahead of time, as the restaurant was quite busy. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Amalfi.
Sweet Endings and Evening Strolls
After dinner, we strolled through the town, soaking in the sights and sounds of Amalfi at night. The streets were alive with activity, as locals and tourists alike enjoyed the warm evening air. We stopped at Antichi Sapori d'Amalfi, a local shop known for its artisanal limoncello and other local products. We sampled a few different flavors of limoncello, and I bought a bottle to take back home as a souvenir. The shop also sells marmalades, creams, ceramics, and other handmade local products, making it a great place to find unique gifts.

As I reflect on our first day, I'm already excited about what tomorrow holds. We plan to hike the Path of the Lemons, a scenic trail that connects Maiori and Minori, offering stunning views of the coastline. We'll also visit the Grotta dello Smeraldo, or Emerald Cave, a natural sea cave known for its emerald-green waters. For dinner, we're planning to dine at Marina Grande, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood and waterfront views. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems we'll discover along the Amalfi Coast. I'm especially looking forward to sharing these experiences with my friends and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, I'll make sure to buy those essentials, so I'm fully prepared for the rest of our adventure. Until then, *ciao* from the enchanting Amalfi Coast!
