Scent of Lemons, Glimmer of Emeralds

Today was a sensory explosion, a true immersion into the heart of the Amalfi Coast. The air was thick with the fragrance of lemons, the views were postcard-perfect, and the water glowed with an otherworldly light. It's days like these that make you realize why this coastline is so revered.

The day began, as most good days do, with breakfast. Aisha and I headed to B&B Al Pesce d'Oro. The 'Al Pesce d'Oro', or 'The Golden Fish' as it translates, was a delightful start to the day [I am never sure what is more enjoyable, the food or the views]. Perched on the waterfront, the views were incredible. The breakfast was a simple affair, but satisfying, with fresh pastries and strong Italian coffee that set the tone for an active day. I enjoyed the orange juice which tasted incredibly fresh. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to tackle the famed Path of the Lemons. This ancient trail, which connects the villages of Maiori and Minori, was once the only land route between them. Now, it's a popular walking path that winds through terraced lemon groves, offering stunning views of the coastline. I had read that in the spring, wisteria is in full bloom, so I was excited to see this. It's about 6 km, and is considered an easy to moderate hike, so my travel companions and I were ready for it.

As we started our walk, the scent of lemons was intoxicating. The *sfusato amalfitano* lemons, unique to this area, are elongated and intensely fragrant. The terraced groves were a testament to the ingenuity of the local farmers, who have cultivated these steep slopes for centuries. I couldn't help but imagine my son, Zayn, running through these groves, his laughter echoing through the hills. Maybe one day I'll bring him here to experience this for himself.

The path itself was a mix of paved walkways and rocky trails, with plenty of stairs to get our hearts pumping. But every step was worth it for the views. The coastline stretched out before us, with the turquoise sea meeting the rugged cliffs in a breathtaking panorama. We passed small churches, each with its own unique charm, and quaint villages where locals greeted us with warm smiles.

The Amalfi Coast is not just a place; it's an experience that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul.

After a refreshing hike, we were ready for lunch. Our destination was Agricola Fore Porta, a farm-to-table restaurant nestled in the hills above Amalfi. The restaurant is located along the path of the Ferriere Valley, which is an historical path, with old paper mills and waterfalls. I had heard that it was a bit of a trek to get there, but the promise of fresh, homemade food kept us motivated. And it did not disappoint! We didn't have reservations, but we were happy to wait the 30 minutes for a table. It's a family run establishment which uses fresh, organic produce from their garden. I spoke with the owners, Silvia and Gerardo, who were so welcoming. Mama Mena prepares the traditional dishes, and everything was delicious. I tried the pumpkin spaghetti and lemon risotto, and they were cooked to perfection. They also engage in beekeeping, so I bought some homemade honey as a souvenir. I'd highly recommend Agricola Fore Porta, but would advise to book in advance, as it is very popular.

With our bellies full, we ventured to the Grotta dello Smeraldo, or Emerald Grotto. This sea cave, discovered in 1932, is named for the emerald green light that filters through the underwater entrance. A tacky road sign and a squadron of tour buses greeted us, but I didn't let this put me off. We descended into the cave via elevator [although there are also stairs], and boarded a small boat for a guided tour. The guide spoke Italian, but gestured enough for me to understand what he was saying. As our boat glided through the still waters, the emerald light danced on the cave walls, creating an ethereal atmosphere. It was a truly magical experience.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to Marina Grande for dinner. This restaurant, located right on the beach, has a history dating back to 1918, when it was a seaside bar. It's been serving up traditional Amalfitan cuisine for decades, and I was eager to try it. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. I had some seafood, which was delicious. To finish, I had some lemon pie, which was the perfect end to the day.

After dinner, we decided to check out Gerry's Pub. It's located in Pogerola, which is a little hamlet above Amalfi. The owner, Gerry, is extremely friendly and helpful. I had read that they have a beautiful terrace with scenic views, so I was keen to see it for myself. The pub was cosy and inviting, and the views were indeed stunning. I enjoyed a drink with my friends, before we headed back to our hotel.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the beautiful gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone in Ravello. I'm looking forward to more stunning views and a deeper dive into the history and culture of this captivating coastline. I am also hoping to do some shopping at Stefania Boutique Amalfi.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It's about discovering new places, experiencing new cultures, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And the Amalfi Coast, with its lemon groves, emerald waters, and warm hospitality, is a destination that will stay with me forever.
