Day 11: Farewell to Askja: Reflecting on Iceland's Majestic Highlands
A final day exploring Lake Askja, enjoying Icelandic cuisine, and reflecting on the journey through Iceland's highlands. #AskjaAdventure
A Fond Farewell to Askja
As my Icelandic adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve undertaken. The raw, untouched beauty of Askja Caldera has left an indelible mark on my soul. Today was about soaking in the last moments of this surreal landscape and savoring the unique flavors of Iceland one last time.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Munkar. The cafe was located in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, and it served as the perfect spot to fuel up before venturing out. I enjoyed a traditional Icelandic breakfast, complete with skyr, rye bread, and smoked salmon. It was a comforting and familiar start to the day, reminding me of similar breakfasts back home in Toronto, though nothing quite beats the Icelandic air and anticipation of the day's adventures.

The journey may be ending, but the memories will last a lifetime.
After breakfast, I decided to take one last trip to Lake Askja. The weather was mild, with a high of 12°C, which made the hike to the lake even more enjoyable. The trail was easy to moderate, taking about 35-45 minutes to reach the lake. As I walked, I was struck once again by the stark, lunar-like landscape that surrounded me. It's no wonder the Apollo astronauts trained here; the terrain truly feels otherworldly.

When I arrived at Lake Askja, I spent a long time simply sitting by the shore, soaking in the view. The turquoise blue water was mesmerizing, and the silence was broken only by the occasional cry of a bird. The lake, also known as Öskjuvatn, is Iceland's second deepest lake, plunging to about 217 meters. It was formed after a major eruption in 1875, and its serene beauty is a testament to nature's ability to create something beautiful out of destruction.
After my lakeside contemplation, it was time for lunch. I drove to Vik, a charming village known for its black sand beaches and dramatic cliffs. I had lunch at Drangar Restaurant, which is part of Hótel Kría. The restaurant is known for its modern take on traditional Icelandic cuisine, and I was eager to try it. I ordered the Arctic char, which was served with bulgur salad, green asparagus, and buttermilk sauce. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, and the presentation was beautiful. The restaurant itself was stunning, with high ceilings, natural wood, and large windows that offered panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It was the perfect setting for a final Icelandic meal.

In the late afternoon, I decided to do some souvenir shopping. I stopped by the Arctic Workshop, hoping to find a unique memento of my trip. While I couldn't find that specific shop, I did find a local artisan selling handcrafted woolen goods. I purchased a beautiful hand-knitted scarf, which will be a warm reminder of my time in Iceland.

For my final dinner in Iceland, I chose Kjarr Restaurant & Bar in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. This restaurant is celebrated for its authentic Icelandic cuisine and warm hospitality. I decided to try their signature lamb dish, which was highly recommended. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and it was served with locally sourced vegetables. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made the experience even more enjoyable. The restaurant opened in 2022, and has quickly become a culinary gem in the area.

As I sit here tonight, writing this blog post, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had over the past eleven days. Askja Caldera is a place of unparalleled beauty and tranquility, and I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore it. From hiking to Lake Askja to savoring traditional Icelandic cuisine, every moment has been a treasure.
This solo journey has been more than just a trip; it's been a personal transformation. The solitude and the stunning landscapes have given me time to reflect on my life back in Toronto, my family, and my aspirations. I've learned to appreciate the simple things, like the warmth of a woolen scarf on a cold day or the taste of fresh, locally sourced food.
I’m already looking forward to returning home to Aisha and Zayn, eager to share my stories and photos. I know Zayn will be particularly fascinated by the lunar-like landscapes of Askja, and I can't wait to inspire his own sense of adventure.
While this chapter of my Icelandic adventure is closing, I know that the memories and lessons I've gained will stay with me forever. Thank you, Askja, for your magic and your mystery. Until next time, bless.
