A Day of Dragons and Delights

As my Icelandic adventure nears its end, today was a blend of rugged landscapes and delightful culinary experiences. It's amazing how much a single day can offer when you're open to the journey, and today was a testament to that. From exploring a canyon that felt like another planet to savoring some of the best Icelandic cuisine, it was a day to remember.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hunkubakkar Farm Restaurant. The spread was impressive, featuring local delicacies that gave me a true taste of Icelandic farm life. I savored some grilled lamb, which Hunkubakkar is known for, and it was indeed one of the best I’ve had. The restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients truly shines through in their dishes. It's experiences like these that make me appreciate sustainable tourism and the importance of supporting local businesses.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set off to Drekagil, also known as Dragon Gully. The drive there was an experience in itself, navigating the rugged F-roads that demanded a sturdy 4x4 vehicle. It’s a good thing I opted for one! The landscape transformed into a surreal, almost Martian terrain. I could see why NASA used this area for research related to the Mars 2020 mission. The rocky, inhospitable terrain felt otherworldly.

Exploring Drekagil was like stepping into a fairy tale. The twisted lava formations resembled mythical creatures, and the narrow gorge led to a hidden waterfall. The hike wasn't too strenuous, but it did require some minor rock climbing near a small stream. The views were absolutely worth it. I spent hours photographing the bizarre basalt formations and the dramatic lava fields. It's a place where you can truly feel the raw power of nature.

After my adventurous morning, I headed to Eskifjörður for lunch at Randulf's Sea House. This restaurant is located in a beautifully preserved shore-building that dates back to the late 19th and early 20th century. The atmosphere was incredible, filled with maritime artifacts and a sense of history. I enjoyed some fresh seafood, which was delicious and prepared with local ingredients. The service was friendly, and I even had the chance to visit the small museum on the second floor. It was like stepping back in time and experiencing the life of Icelandic fishermen.

In the late afternoon, I decided to do some shopping in Reykjavik, specifically at Spúútnik, a vintage clothing store. Located on Laugavegur, the main shopping street, Spúútnik is a treasure trove of vintage finds from the 80s and 90s. I love vintage clothing, and this store did not disappoint. I found a few unique pieces that I know Aisha will absolutely love. The store itself has a quirky and colorful interior, making the shopping experience even more enjoyable.

For my final dinner of the trip, I chose Restaurant Kanslarinn in Hella. The restaurant has a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with wooden tables and a traditional Icelandic ambiance. I decided to try the horse steak, a local specialty, and it was surprisingly delicious. The menu also featured other Icelandic dishes, like lamb chops and mushroom soup. It was a perfect way to end the day, savoring the flavors of Iceland one last time.

As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had. The rugged beauty of Drekagil, the culinary delights of Hunkubakkar and Randulf's Sea House, and the vintage charm of Spúútnik have all contributed to an unforgettable day. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel and explore new places.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, it’s sadly the last day of my solo adventure. I plan to visit Lake Askja [if weather permits] and soak in the views and hopefully capture some amazing photos. I’ll have breakfast at Cafe Munkar, lunch at Drangar Restaurant, and a final dinner at Kjarr Restaurant & Bar. I also plan to visit the Arctic Workshop for some last-minute souvenir shopping.

This trip to Askja Caldera has been an incredible journey of self-discovery and connection with nature. I'm excited to share more stories and photos from my adventure when I return home. Until then, takk fyrir (thank you) for following along!
