Echoes of the Moon in Askja Caldera

Today was nothing short of surreal. Imagine standing in a place so otherworldly, it feels like you've stepped onto the moon. That's Askja Caldera for you. The sheer scale of the volcanic landscape, the stark contrast of colors, and the profound silence – it's an experience that resonates deep within. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Grána Bistro. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of local flavors were the perfect start to what I knew would be a long day. I opted for a traditional Icelandic breakfast, eager to fuel up before heading into the highlands. It's amazing how a simple meal can set the tone for an entire day, and Grána Bistro certainly delivered. Located inside the 1238 The Battle of Iceland exhibition in Sauðárkrókur, it offered a menu with great local food, coffee, and beverages. The bistro had a cozy dining area for up to 60 people and is open every day from 10:00 – 17:00.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Askja. The drive itself was an adventure, the landscape transforming from lush green pastures to stark, volcanic plains. As I ventured deeper into the highlands, the roads became more rugged, a testament to the raw and untamed nature of this region. The journey took around 3-4 hours, but there were a couple of stops along the way at interesting sights and locations.
Finally, I arrived at Askja. The first glimpse of the caldera was breathtaking. A vast, desolate expanse stretched before me, a stark reminder of the powerful forces that shaped this land. The weather in Askja in August is generally mild, with average temperatures around 10.5°C (51°F), but it can be unpredictable. I made sure to pack layers and waterproof clothing, just in case. There won't be any snow, unless you're planning to hike into the highlands areas such as Askja. Instead, Iceland still usually has some rain during the summer months, with August usually encountering rainfall 23 total days of the month.
I parked at the Vikraborgir Car Park and started the hike towards Víti crater. The trail was well-marked, but the terrain was uneven, a mix of gravel and volcanic rock. The hike to Askja Lake is 2.4 km on mostly even terrain, and takes around 35 minutes. As I walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of the landscape. It felt like stepping onto another planet, a place where the forces of nature reigned supreme. The lunar landscape of Askja, the open deserts of Ódáðahraun, and freshwater springs create a unique experience.
In the heart of Iceland's highlands, Askja Caldera whispers tales of volcanic power and serene beauty, a place where the earth's raw energy meets tranquil reflection.

Reaching Víti crater was a moment I'll never forget. The turquoise-blue geothermal water beckoned, a stark contrast to the black volcanic rock surrounding it. Despite the cool air, the water was surprisingly warm, around 22 degrees Celsius. I couldn't resist the opportunity to take a dip, joining a few other brave souls in the otherworldly pool. The experience was invigorating, the mineral-rich water soothing my tired muscles. It was truly a unique experience to swim in a volcanic crater.
After my swim, I explored the rim of the caldera, taking in the panoramic views. The vastness of the landscape was humbling, a reminder of the insignificance of human existence in the face of nature's grandeur. I thought about my family back in Toronto, Aisha and Zayn, and wished they could experience this with me. Perhaps one day, I'll bring them here, to witness the magic of Askja firsthand.
As the day wore on, I began the descent back to the car park. The sun was starting to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the volcanic landscape. The colors of the rocks seemed to deepen, the oranges and reds becoming more vibrant in the fading light. I made a short stop in Drekagil just outside of Askja.
Before leaving the Askja area, I did a bit of shopping at the Blue Lagoon Store Reykjavik. Though a bit touristy, I wanted to get a gift for Aisha. Ironic that I was buying skin care products from the Blue Lagoon when I was swimming in a volcanic crater!

For lunch, I stopped at Vogafjós Farm Resort. This was a unique experience. The restaurant has windows looking into the dairy, so you can watch cows getting milked in their stalls. I enjoyed some homemade food using produce from the farm. The fresh dairy products were amazing. The farm-to-table concept was a highlight, and it was fascinating to see the cows being milked while I ate. I had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. The staff were great and the food was delicious.

In the evening, I drove to Klaustur Restaurant & Bar for dinner. Located in Kirkjubaejarklaustur, this restaurant is known for its modern cuisine with locally sourced ingredients. I savored a meal inspired by the flavors of Kirkjubaejarklaustur, including world-renowned arctic char and fresh rhubarb from their garden. I enjoyed the relaxing and inviting atmosphere. The service was great, and the ambience was very bright, white, clean, and romantic. The fresh fish was amazing.

As I reflect on my day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a unique and awe-inspiring place. Askja Caldera is more than just a geological wonder; it's a place that touches the soul, a reminder of the power and beauty of our planet. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Dyngjufjoll [DayNumber+1Attractions], I carry with me the echoes of the moon, the warmth of the geothermal waters, and the profound silence of Askja Caldera.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Dyngjufjoll, another prominent volcano in the region. I'm eager to see what other geological wonders await me, and to continue immersing myself in the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland. I'll be sure to grab breakfast at Sauðá and lunch at Jon Riki [DayNumber+1Restaurants], to fuel up for another day of exploration. Also, I plan to stop by Handverksskúrinn, a local shop [DayNumber+1OtherActivities], to pick up some souvenirs.
One thing I have learned on this trip is that things don't always go as planned. I had intended to visit the Blue Lagoon Store in Reykjavik today [DayNumberOtherActivities], but I did so in the Askja area instead. I am also planning to visit the Reykjavik Jazz Festival between August 26-31. August 26 will feature ADHD, SAUMUR, Poney Moon, and Skuggamyndir. It should be a great time.
