Among Giants: My Day Exploring Dyngjufjoll

Today was a day of epic proportions, both literally and figuratively. Surrounded by the imposing Dyngjufjoll mountains, I felt like a tiny speck in a vast, untouched landscape. The scale of everything here is simply humbling, and it's a feeling I'll carry with me long after I leave Iceland. It's days like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace, to soak in the scenery without distraction, and to truly connect with the environment around me.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Sauðá in Sauðárkrókur. As much as I love the convenience of camping, treating myself to a proper meal in town was a welcome change. I savored Scandinavian cuisine, opting for some seafood. It was a delicious and energizing start to what promised to be a physically demanding day.

Fuelled up, I set off towards Dyngjufjoll, the volcanic mountain range that cradles the Askja caldera. The drive itself was an adventure, the rugged terrain testing my vehicle and my resolve. The landscape transformed into a stark, lunar-like expanse, a testament to Iceland's volcanic activity. As I drove, I was thinking about Aisha and Zayn, wondering what they would have thought of this place. Zayn would have been ecstatic to see the lunar landscape, I am sure. I made a mental note to bring them here someday. The weather in Askja during August typically sees average temperatures around 10.5°C (51°F), with highs reaching 13°C (55°F) and lows around 8°C (46°F). While there isn't usually snow during the summer months, rainfall is common, with an average of 23 rainy days in August. It was a good thing I had packed waterproof gear.

Reaching Dyngjufjoll was like stepping onto another planet. The mountains, formed by eruptions under an Ice Age glacier cap, rose dramatically from the surrounding lava fields. The name 'Askja' itself means caldera in Icelandic, a fitting description for this sunken crater within the mountains. I parked at Vikraborgir, the designated parking lot by Askja.

I decided to have lunch at Jon Riki. This cozy restaurant is known for its delicious food, homemade bread, and craft beers. I opted for the shepherd's pie, a hearty and comforting dish that was perfect for the chilly weather. The restaurant had a quirky, musical vibe, with instruments set up in the corner. It felt like a proper Icelandic experience. It was just the kind of place I needed to recharge before continuing my exploration.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet solitude of nature, where the world shrinks and your senses expand.

After lunch, I spent the afternoon exploring the area around Dyngjufjoll. I didn't attempt any serious hiking today, opting instead to wander through the lava fields, marveling at the bizarre rock formations and the sheer scale of the landscape. The isolation was palpable; it felt like I was the only person for miles around. It's a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Toronto, and I found myself appreciating the peace and quiet.

One of the highlights of the day was visiting Handverksskúrinn, a local craft shop. While the itinerary mentioned Handverksskúrinn being in Selfoss, I was happy to find a smaller outlet closer to Askja. It was a treasure trove of Icelandic souvenirs, from hand-knitted sweaters to pottery and jewelry. I picked up a small, hand-carved wooden bird for Aisha, something to remind her of this trip. I also found a cozy wool hat for Zayn, perfect for the Toronto winters. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and it felt good to bring home something unique and authentic. The shop was run by local women who were incredibly talented. I was told that the prices were reasonable, but VAT refunds were not offered.

Before heading back to camp, I treated myself to dinner at Grána Bistro. Located in Sauðárkrókur, this bistro offers a menu of local food, coffee, and beverages in a cozy dining area. It's located inside the 1238: The Battle of Iceland exhibition, which recreates Iceland's most dramatic clash of family clans. I enjoyed a hearty meal of Icelandic lamb, savoring the flavors of the region. The bistro has a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my experiences. Dyngjufjoll is a place that demands respect, a testament to the raw power of nature. It's a place where you can truly disconnect from the world and connect with yourself. The vastness of the landscape, the silence, and the sheer beauty of it all left me feeling humbled and inspired.

Tomorrow, I plan to tackle the Askja trail, a hike that promises even more breathtaking views of the caldera and its surroundings. I'm looking forward to the challenge and to experiencing even more of this incredible landscape. I also plan to visit the SKY Bar. It will be a nice way to wind down after a day of hiking.

Back at my campsite, I sipped a cup of tea, the sky ablaze with the colors of the setting sun. The wind howled softly, a lullaby of the highlands. I felt a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey, for the opportunity to explore such a unique and beautiful place. As I crawled into my tent, I knew that this was a day I would never forget.

And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow would bring.
