A Day of Quirky Delights
Today was a day of embracing the wonderfully weird and authentic side of Naoshima. I ventured beyond the grand museums and into the heart of Miyanoura, seeking out experiences that truly connect you with the island's spirit. From a bathhouse that doubles as an art installation to a gallery tucked away in a former pachinko parlor, today was all about the unexpected.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Terrace Restaurant. The buffet had a mix of Western and Japanese options, and while the food was good, the view of the Seto Inland Sea definitely stole the show. Fuelled up, I was ready to explore the artistic underbelly of Naoshima.
My first stop was the Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu. Walking up to it, I knew I was in for something special. The exterior is an explosion of color and repurposed materials, a true collage of Showa-era kitsch. Shinro Ohtake, the artist behind this creation, truly made a space for the community, blending art with everyday life. It's more than just a bathhouse; it's a social hub where locals and tourists alike can come together. I decided to embrace the full experience and purchased a small towel as a souvenir. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the vibrant mosaics and the playful atmosphere. The bath itself was wonderfully relaxing, and gazing at the quirky art while soaking was definitely a unique experience. I couldn't help but smile at the sheer audacity and creativity of it all. Definitely a must-do!

Art isn't just something to be observed; it's something to be lived.
Next on my list was Miyanoura Gallery 6. Finding it was a bit of an adventure in itself, wandering through the quiet streets of Miyanoura. The gallery is housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, a nod to the island's past. The building itself is quite interesting, especially how it integrates with the small park next to it. Inside, the gallery space was intimate and focused on photography and video installations. The exhibit featured a collection of photos from Yoichi Midorikawa about Seto Inland Sea life in the 50's. It was fascinating to see the history of the area captured in these images. It’s a reminder that Naoshima wasn’t always an art mecca, but a place with its own rich history and culture.

For lunch, I headed to Raumen Tsumu, a small ramen shop known for its comforting dishes. It's run by an elderly couple, and the atmosphere was incredibly welcoming. The ramen was simple but delicious, the perfect fuel for more exploration. As I slurped down the noodles, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the island and its people.

In the evening, I decided to try Ebisukamo for dinner. Tucked away in Honmura, this cozy restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and friendly service. The owner was incredibly kind, and the chef, Kazuya, prepared some truly delicious dishes. I tried the clams in sake and the yellowtail sashimi, both of which were incredibly fresh and flavorful. I also couldn't resist trying the local ginger beer, which had a unique and refreshing taste. The portions were on the smaller side, but it was the perfect opportunity to try a few different dishes. It felt like a truly authentic Naoshima experience, away from the crowds and the more touristy spots.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the Honmura district, visiting the Honmura Lounge & Archive and the Ando Museum. I'm excited to see more of Tadao Ando's architecture and learn more about the history of the island. I'm also planning to visit Mikazukishoten, a local shop. It’s moments like these, exploring the hidden corners and embracing the local culture, that make travel so rewarding. I'm constantly reminded of how much there is to discover beyond the surface, and I'm grateful for every opportunity to learn and grow.
