Echoes of Art and Tradition in Honmura

Today was a day of deep dives into the heart of Naoshima’s artistic soul, a journey through the village of Honmura. Leaving behind the iconic pumpkins and the bustle of Miyanoura, I sought a more intimate connection with the island's art and history. It proved to be a day filled with unexpected discoveries and quiet moments of reflection, adding another layer to my evolving understanding of this unique destination.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Naoshima Yokocho. The restaurant was a convenient start to the day, doubling as a bar. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It was a comforting and energizing meal, setting the stage for a day of exploration. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere made it a great place to fuel up before heading out.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I made my way towards the Honmura district. The walk itself was a pleasure, the crisp March air carrying the scent of the sea and the promise of spring. The island's landscape, even in this quieter season, possessed a serene beauty that never failed to captivate me.

My first stop was the Honmura Lounge & Archive. This unassuming building, once an agricultural cooperative supermarket, now serves as the information center for the Art House Project. Ryue Nishizawa designed the space, preserving much of the original architecture. Inside, I found a wealth of information about the various art houses, the artists involved, and the history of the project itself. It was a valuable orientation point, helping me to understand the context and significance of the art I was about to encounter.

As I stepped inside the Honmura Lounge & Archive, I was immediately struck by the seamless blend of old and new. The building's original structure had been thoughtfully preserved, with modern design elements subtly integrated to create a space that felt both nostalgic and contemporary. Information on the Art House Project was readily available, and I spent some time browsing through the brochures and displays, eager to learn more about the artists and their creations. The staff were incredibly helpful, offering insights and recommendations that proved invaluable as I planned my route for the day.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Leaving the archive, I felt a sense of excitement building within me. The Art House Project was unlike anything I had ever experienced, and I was eager to immerse myself in its unique blend of art, history, and community. Wandering through the streets of Honmura, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the island's past. The traditional wooden houses, with their weathered facades and intricate details, spoke of generations of families who had lived and worked here, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of the sea.

Next on my list was the Ando Museum, dedicated to the work of the renowned architect Tadao Ando. From the outside, the museum appeared as a traditional 100-year-old wooden house, blending seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood. However, stepping inside was like entering another world. Ando had transformed the interior into a series of concrete spaces, a striking contrast to the building's exterior. The interplay of light and shadow, the clean lines, and the minimalist aesthetic were all hallmarks of Ando's signature style.

The museum showcased Ando's projects on Naoshima and elsewhere through photographs, sketches, and models. It provided a fascinating glimpse into his creative process and his deep connection to the island. I was particularly struck by his ability to integrate modern architecture with the natural landscape, creating spaces that were both functional and aesthetically stunning.

After immersing myself in Ando's world, I decided to take a break for lunch. I headed to Nagomi, a restaurant located within the Naoshima welfare center. It was a popular spot with locals, and I was drawn to its communal canteen-like atmosphere. I ordered a set meal featuring local vegetables and seafood, a simple yet delicious meal that reflected the island's culinary heritage. As I ate, I enjoyed observing the interactions between the locals, feeling a sense of connection to the community.

Before continuing my artistic exploration, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Mikazukishoten. This charming shop, located in a renovated traditional house, offered a curated selection of local crafts, souvenirs, and specialty coffee. The owner, who had a background in apparel, had partnered with a coffee expert to create a unique coffee stand that celebrated the island's artistic spirit. I sampled their signature blend, a rich and aromatic brew that perfectly captured the essence of Naoshima. I also picked up a few souvenirs for Aisha and Zayn, knowing they would appreciate the unique and thoughtful gifts.

With my caffeine fix and shopping spree complete, I felt refreshed and ready to continue my exploration. I spent the rest of the afternoon wandering through the streets of Honmura, soaking in the atmosphere and discovering hidden gems. I stumbled upon small shrines, traditional gardens, and quirky art installations, each adding to the island's unique charm. The pace of life in Honmura was slow and deliberate, a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Toronto. I found myself slowing down, too, taking the time to appreciate the small details and savor the simple pleasures of island life.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Yuunagi for dinner. Located near the ferry terminal, this restaurant specialized in dishes made with flounder from Naoshima's Noumi Coast. I ordered the flounder set meal, a delicious and satisfying meal that showcased the island's fresh seafood. The restaurant had a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff about the island's history and culture.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Walking Ark and the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. I am also planning to have breakfast at Little Plum, lunch at Gumbo Hut Shioya, and dinner at Restaurant EN.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Naoshima's unique blend of art, culture, and natural beauty. The island had a way of slowing me down, of encouraging me to appreciate the small details and connect with the local community. It was a place where art was not just something to be observed, but something to be lived and experienced.

As I made my way back to My Lodge Naoshima, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the days ahead. Naoshima had captured my heart, and I knew that my journey of discovery was far from over. The memories of today, the art, the food, and the people, would stay with me long after I left this enchanting island. For now, though, it was time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of exploration and adventure. The quiet hum of the island at night was a soothing lullaby, promising sweet dreams of art, nature, and the simple joys of life.
