Hidden Gems of Mendoza

Today was a day of venturing slightly off the beaten path in Mendoza, a delightful departure from the more well-trodden tourist routes. It’s always exciting to uncover those hidden gems, the places that offer a more intimate and authentic experience. As much as I love the grand estates, there’s something incredibly special about the smaller, family-run bodegas that whisper stories of tradition and passion.

My day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast at Montecatini Restaurante Mendoza. The reviews I'd read had raved about their Italian fare, and as someone who appreciates a good plate of pasta, I was eager to start my day there. It was a charming spot, and I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying breakfast, fueling up for the day’s adventures. Having lived in Berlin for years, I've learned to appreciate a good, solid breakfast to set the tone for the day.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to my first destination: Doña Paula. Nestled in Luján de Cuyo, this winery is known for its commitment to expressing the unique terroir of each vineyard. The estate itself is beautiful, with sprawling vineyards set against the backdrop of the majestic Andes. I opted for a guided tour, eager to learn more about their winemaking philosophy. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, explaining how Doña Paula meticulously manages every aspect of the winemaking process, from vineyard selection to fermentation techniques. They own 100% of the vineyards used for their wines, which allows them to maintain complete control over quality. I found it fascinating how they conduct detailed studies of Mendoza's soils and microclimates to ensure the best possible expression of each varietal.

The tasting that followed was a delightful exploration of their portfolio. I particularly enjoyed their Malbecs, each one showcasing a different facet of the varietal. The Doña Paula Estate Malbec was a standout, with its intense aromas of fresh berries and a velvety smooth finish. I also sampled their Sauvignon Blanc, a crisp and refreshing white wine that was perfect for the warm Mendoza sunshine. It was interesting to learn that Doña Paula was established in 1997 and has since become known for its innovative approach to winemaking, including the production of Argentina's first Sauvignon Blanc sparkling wine, Sauvage Blanc. As someone who enjoys discovering unique wines, I was thoroughly impressed.

Wine is sunlight, held together by water.

After Doña Paula, I ventured to Bodega Tierras Altas, a boutique winery owned by the Vargas Arizu Family. This bodega has a rich history dating back to 1890, with four generations dedicated to viticulture. Tierras Altas prides itself on its “Malbec Experience Tour,” which offers a fun and engaging way to learn about their wines, winery, and the people behind the label. The setting was intimate and welcoming, with a personal touch that made the experience feel more like visiting a family estate than a commercial winery. The family's dedication to transforming daily effort into a wine culture was palpable.

I opted for the “Experiencia Malbec Español,” a guided tasting that explored different styles of Malbec directly from stainless steel tanks and oak barrels in their underground cellar. It was fascinating to taste the nuances in each sample, influenced by the aging process and the specific terroir. The tour included a visit to their vineyards, where I learned about their sustainable farming practices and their commitment to preserving the land for future generations. The passion and dedication of the Vargas Arizu family were evident in every aspect of the operation. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to serve myself directly from the tanks, a unique and interactive experience that made me feel like a part of the winemaking process.

For lunch, I headed to Casarena Bodega y Viñedos, enticed by recommendations of their outstanding dining experience. Situated in a beautifully restored 1937 winery in Perdriel, Luján de Cuyo, Casarena offered not only exquisite wines but also a menu that perfectly complemented their varietals. The setting was picturesque, with views of the vineyards and the Andes mountains providing a stunning backdrop. I chose a table on the terrace, eager to soak in the atmosphere while savoring the local cuisine.

The lunch menu was a delightful showcase of regional flavors, with each dish expertly paired with one of Casarena’s signature wines. I started with a refreshing salad featuring local greens and goat cheese, paired with their Casarena Sauvignon Blanc. For the main course, I opted for the grilled steak, cooked to perfection and served with a side of roasted vegetables. The steak was paired with their Casarena Malbec, a robust and flavorful wine that perfectly complemented the richness of the meat. The portions were generous, and the service was attentive and friendly. It was evident that Casarena takes pride in their culinary offerings, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create dishes that celebrate the flavors of Mendoza. The chef’s skill in harmonizing the food with the wines was truly impressive. I was so impressed by the eco-friendly practices and the passion exhibited by the staff. I'll have to tell Jürgen all about it when I get back home. He'd love this place.

As the afternoon waned, I made my way back to Mendoza city, but not before stopping at Vinería De Mendoza for a pre-dinner drink. This wine bar is a local favorite, known for its extensive selection of Argentine wines and its relaxed atmosphere. I settled into a cozy corner, ordered a glass of Malbec, and soaked in the ambiance. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the fruits of Mendoza’s vineyards. The service was friendly and efficient, and the staff was happy to offer recommendations based on my preferences. I struck up a conversation with a couple from Buenos Aires, who were also on a wine-tasting tour of the region. We shared stories and recommendations, adding to the convivial atmosphere. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

Dinner was at El Club de la Milanesa, a spot I chose for its reputation for serving classic Argentine comfort food. Milanesa, a breaded and fried cutlet of beef or chicken, is a staple in Argentine cuisine, and El Club de la Milanesa offers a variety of creative takes on this classic dish. I opted for the Milanesa Napolitana, topped with tomato sauce, ham, and melted cheese. It was a hearty and satisfying meal, perfect for ending a day of wine tasting and exploration. The atmosphere was casual and lively, with families and groups of friends enjoying their meals. The service was efficient, and the prices were reasonable. It was a great way to experience a taste of local culture. While the reviews I read were mixed, I found the milanesa to be quite enjoyable, a comforting and familiar dish that reminded me of home-cooked meals.

Today was a reminder of why I love travel so much – the joy of discovery, the chance to connect with local culture, and the opportunity to savor new flavors. Mendoza continues to surprise and delight, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. Perhaps I’ll find a small token for Sophie tomorrow; she would love a little something from Argentina. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Cecchin Family Winery and Finca Bandini, two more wineries that promise unique experiences. I’m also looking forward to breakfast at Bodega Los Toneles, lunch at Casa del Visitante, and dinner at Azafran Restaurant. Before heading back to the hotel, I'm planning to visit Sol y Vino Mendoza, a shop where I hope to find some unique wine-related souvenirs. It’s days like these that make me grateful for the opportunity to share my adventures with all of you. Until tomorrow, cheers from Mendoza!

It seems there are a few events happening around Mendoza, including a conference on Mindset Directivo and a basic beer brewing course. However, I think I'll stick to the wine for now! I also found out that the Argentinian band Divididos is performing in Mendoza tonight. I think I will pass on this one, but it's great to see so much going on in Mendoza.
