Sipping Through Paradise

Today was a symphony of flavors, aromas, and breathtaking views, a true immersion into the heart of Mendoza's wine country. From an enlightening wine experience to exquisite meals paired with the region's finest vintages, every moment was a celebration of the senses. It's days like these that remind me why I love sharing these journeys with you all.

The day began with a delightful breakfast at Estancia La Pasión, a charming spot that set the perfect tone for the adventures ahead. The morning air was crisp, the sky a brilliant blue, and the anticipation of the day's wine-filled itinerary was palpable. I savored traditional Argentine pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration and indulgence. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the delicious pastries back in Berlin for Jürgen and Sophie. They would absolutely love the medialunas!

Next on the agenda was the Mendoza Wine Experience. It was an immersive journey into the world of wine making, from the vine to the bottle. The tour was incredibly informative, detailing the unique terroir of Mendoza, the different grape varietals, and the meticulous processes involved in crafting world-class wines. I learned so much about the passion and dedication that goes into every bottle, deepening my appreciation for the art of winemaking. One of the highlights was a sensory experience where we explored the different aromas and flavors found in wine. It was fascinating to identify notes of cherry, plum, chocolate, and even tobacco!

From there, I headed to Bodega Ruca Malen, a winery renowned for its commitment to quality and sustainability. The setting was simply stunning. The vineyards stretched out before me, framed by the majestic Andes Mountains. The air was filled with the sweet scent of grapes, and the views were nothing short of postcard-perfect. The tour of the bodega was fascinating, showcasing the blend of traditional and modern techniques used in their winemaking process. I was particularly impressed by their commitment to organic farming practices and their respect for the environment.

The highlight of the visit was, of course, the wine tasting. I sampled a selection of their signature wines, each one a testament to the unique terroir of Mendoza. The Malbec was rich and full-bodied, with notes of dark fruit and spice. The Cabernet Sauvignon was elegant and complex, with a long, lingering finish. Each sip was a revelation, a journey for the senses that transported me to the heart of the vineyards.

Lunch was an extraordinary affair at Casa Vigil (El Enemigo), a restaurant that has earned a Michelin star for its outstanding cuisine and commitment to gastronomy and sustainability. The restaurant is the creation of Alejandro Vigil, one of Argentina's most respected winemakers, and the experience was nothing short of magical. The setting was enchanting, with stone walls adorned with art, wine barrels stacked in every corner, and a kaleidoscope-style window that cast psychedelic patterns of light across the dining room. The menu was a celebration of local and seasonal ingredients, with each dish expertly paired with one of El Enemigo's acclaimed wines. The sommelier guided me through the pairings, explaining the nuances of each wine and how it complemented the flavors of the food. The tomatoes grown by Alejandro’s mother, María Sance, were a particular highlight, showcasing over 50 revived varieties.

In the afternoon, I indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Wine Up Tienda de Vinos Peatonal, a charming wine shop located on Peatonal Sarmiento. The selection was impressive, featuring wines from over 100 different bodegas in Argentina. I picked up a few bottles to take back to Berlin, including a Malbec from Bodega Ruca Malen and a Cabernet Franc-dominated blend from El Enemigo. I know Jürgen will be thrilled to add these to our collection!

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Osadía de Crear for dinner. The restaurant, part of Susana Balbo Wines, is known for its avant-garde culinary techniques and its innovative approach to Argentine cuisine. The setting was elegant and sophisticated, with stunning views of the surrounding vineyards. The menu was a work of art, each dish a masterpiece of flavor and presentation. I opted for the tasting menu, which featured a selection of the chef's signature creations, each paired with one of Susana Balbo's acclaimed wines. The experience was truly unforgettable, a testament to the creativity and passion of the Argentine culinary scene. It was inspiring to learn about Susana Balbo, Argentina's first female winemaker, and her dedication to putting Argentine wine on the world map. Her daughter, Ana, has continued the family tradition, bringing her own unique vision to the business.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and flavors of Mendoza. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the stunning landscapes, the warm hospitality of the locals, and the passion for winemaking that permeates every aspect of life here. It's a place that nourishes the soul, inspires the senses, and leaves you longing to return.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Doña Paula and Bodega Tierras Altas to continue my exploration of Mendoza's diverse wine scene. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Vinería De Mendoza, a local bar where I can sample more of the region's wines and soak up the atmosphere. And of course, I'll be sure to indulge in some delicious Argentine cuisine at Montecatini Restaurante Mendoza for breakfast, Casarena Bodega y Viñedos for lunch, and El Club de la Milanesa for dinner. It's going to be another day filled with unforgettable experiences!

The weather in Mendoza has been delightful, with daytime highs around 17°C and cooler nights. It's the perfect time of year to visit, with moderate temperatures and plenty of sunshine. I did forget to pack sunscreen and a reusable water bottle, a rookie mistake! I'll be sure to pick those up tomorrow before heading out for more wine adventures. It’s been such a treat to experience Mendoza in May, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and enriching travel experience.

Until tomorrow, ¡salud!
