Sunday Serenity in Mendoza's Wine Country
Today was a day of embracing the slow pace of life, something I think we all need a little more of. I traded the hustle of Berlin for the serene vineyards of Mendoza, and it was exactly the reset I needed. From organic wines to gourmet meals, every moment was a celebration of local culture and flavors. It's days like these that remind me why I fell in love with travel blogging in the first place – the chance to immerse myself in new experiences and share them with all of you.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Bodega Los Toneles. While their Casona art gallery and café usually opens later in the day, they made a special exception, and I was able to get a head start with a delicious meal and strong coffee before venturing out to explore the vineyards. The Bodega itself is a cultural heritage site, and it was fascinating to see the blend of art, architecture, and design. I made a mental note to return later in my trip to properly enjoy what they have to offer.
With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to my first winery of the day: Cecchin Family Winery. Located in Maipú, it was founded in 1959. What sets Cecchin apart is their commitment to organic and natural winemaking. As someone who values sustainable tourism, I was eager to learn about their practices. The winery is run by the grandson of the founders, Oscar Alberto, and they are 100% organic in the vines and also use biodynamic practices. I took a guided tour, learning about their history and winemaking philosophy. Of course, no visit is complete without a tasting. I sampled three of their organic wines, each with a unique character that reflected the terroir. The experience was both educational and delightful, reinforcing my belief that great wine is made with respect for nature.

Wine is bottled poetry.
Next on the agenda was Finca Bandini, a ‘House of Wines’ nestled in the heart of Las Compuertas. This winery offered a completely different, yet equally captivating experience. Finca Bandini is known for its commitment to history, the water, and its origins. The estate is located on the original course of the Mendoza River. The setting was stunning, with the majestic Andes Mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop. Here, I opted for a wine tasting paired with a selection of local delicacies. Empanadas, cheeses, and olives – each bite was a burst of authentic Argentine flavor. Sipping wine while overlooking the vineyards, I felt a deep connection to the land and its traditions. It was a reminder that wine is not just a beverage, but a cultural artifact that tells a story.

After a fulfilling afternoon of wine tasting, it was time to indulge in some retail therapy. I made a stop at Sol y Vino Mendoza, known as the largest wine store in Argentina. Though I wasn’t necessarily looking to buy anything, I was interested in seeing what wines they had to offer. It was a delightful experience, browsing through the extensive collection and soaking in the atmosphere of a true wine lover's paradise.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Azafran Restaurant for dinner. I had heard so much about this place, and it certainly lived up to the hype. Azafran started off as a deli for imported fancy foodstuffs, but evolved into the modern Argentinian destination it is today. The ambiance was sophisticated yet welcoming, with jars of house-made pickles, jams, and sauces lining the walls. I opted for the four-course dinner menu, and each dish was a work of art. Chef Sebastián Weigandt’s innovative use of local ingredients was truly impressive. The sommelier's wine pairings were impeccable, enhancing every flavor and creating a harmonious culinary experience. Azafran is known for its extensive wine list, with a focus on Mendoza wines but also selections from diverse regions around the country. It’s considered one of the most sophisticated spots in the city, and I can certainly see why. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Before heading back to the Huentala Hotel, I took a leisurely stroll through the city center, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. There were no specific events happening today, but the energy of the city was palpable. Families were out enjoying the evening, couples were strolling hand in hand, and the air was filled with music and laughter. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best travel experiences are the unplanned moments, the simple joys of immersing oneself in a new culture.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I feel grateful for the opportunity to explore the Mendoza Wine Region. The beauty of the landscape, the passion of the winemakers, and the warmth of the people have left an indelible mark on my soul. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Bodega Piattelli Vineyards and Mendel Wines. I’m also planning on stopping by El Faro Bistro Mendoza for breakfast, Clos de Chacras for lunch, and La Gloria Cantina Cool for dinner. Before heading back to the hotel for the night, I'm hoping to visit Chachingo Arístides for a drink. I'm excited to see what new discoveries await me, and I look forward to sharing them with you all.
For now, it's time to rest and recharge. Goodnight from Mendoza!
P.S. I really need to remember to buy sunscreen. The Argentinian sun is no joke!
