Hidden Gems and Elegant Wines

Today was a day of immersing myself in the heart of Mendoza's wine country. I set out to discover some hidden gems and taste the elegant wines that this region is celebrated for. It was a day filled with beautiful landscapes, fascinating stories, and, of course, exceptional wine.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at El Faro Bistro Mendoza. It was a perfect way to start the day, with the city slowly awakening beneath me. The rooftop setting offered stunning views, and the global cuisine was a welcome change of pace before diving into the more traditional Argentine fare that awaited me later in the day. I savored a strong coffee and a pastry, enjoying the peaceful moments before the day's adventures truly began. The plan for the day was to visit two renowned wineries: Bodega Piattelli Vineyards and Mendel Wines, and to experience the local cuisine at Clos de Chacras, bodega y restaurante and La Gloria Cantina Cool. I was excited to see what each location had in store.

First on the agenda was Bodega Piattelli Vineyards. As I drove towards Luján de Cuyo, where Piattelli is located, I was struck by the sheer beauty of the landscape. The vineyards stretched out before me, framed by the majestic Andes Mountains. Piattelli's main winery is in Agrelo, a small winemaking town about 45 minutes from Mendoza, and the province is the largest winemaking region in South America. The winery itself is a sight to behold, blending modern architecture with the natural surroundings. I was greeted warmly and taken on a tour of the facilities. The guide explained Piattelli's commitment to organic winemaking and their careful selection of vineyard locations. The winery champions Argentina's premier grape, Malbec, with limited-release single varietal wines and the revered 'Trinità' blend. The vineyards rely on irrigation from the pure waters melting from the snow-crested peaks, a significant aspect of what makes their wines exquisite. I learned that the winery was adopted by a Minnesotan couple who fell in love with it on holiday, which added a charming touch to the story.

The tasting was, of course, the highlight. I sampled several of their award-winning wines, including the Grand Reserve Malbec and the Trinità blend. Each wine told a story of the land and the dedication of the winemakers. I found myself particularly drawn to the Trinità, a complex blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. It was full-bodied and rich, with a long, satisfying finish. I could easily see myself enjoying a bottle of this back in Berlin with Jürgen.

The best technique in the world won't make up for an environment not perfectly suited to a given varietal.

Next on my itinerary was lunch at Clos de Chacras, bodega y restaurante. This charming spot is located in Chacras de Coria, and it's known for its high-quality wines and exceptional cuisine. The restaurant is set in a beautifully restored building dating back to 1921, surrounded by lush gardens. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and I immediately felt at ease. I opted for the six-course lunch menu with wine pairings. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing the best of Argentine cuisine with a modern twist. The menu was even adaptable for those with celiac disease, ensuring a gluten-free and safe meal for everyone. The wines were perfectly matched to the food, enhancing the flavors and creating a truly memorable dining experience. I particularly enjoyed the trout, cooked to perfection and paired with a crisp, refreshing white wine. The service was impeccable, and the staff went above and beyond to make me feel welcome. It was a delightful experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Mendoza.

After such an exquisite lunch, I made my way to Mendel Wines. Founded in 2002, Mendel Wines embodies the union of Roberto de la Mota, one of Argentina's most respected and experienced winemakers, with a century-old Argentinian family. The winery is dedicated to producing wines of superior quality, expressing the character of their old Malbec and Cabernet vineyards in Luján de Cuyo. Their vineyards are located between 900 and 1,150 meters above sea level, in the best and highest irrigated lands of Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco. As I arrived, I was struck by the sense of history and tradition that permeated the air. The winery itself is housed in a beautifully preserved building dating back to 1928. The tour was fascinating, providing insights into Mendel's winemaking philosophy and their commitment to sustainable practices. I learned about their old vines, some of which were planted in 1928, and their meticulous approach to every stage of the winemaking process.

The tasting was equally impressive. I sampled several of their flagship wines, including the Mendel Malbec and the Unus, a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines were elegant and refined, with a distinct sense of place. I was particularly impressed by the Mendel Malbec, which was rich and complex, with notes of dark fruit and spice. It was a wine that demanded attention and contemplation. I also learned that Roberto de la Mota was named the 2024 Winemaking Legend, Medal of Excellence, by Tim Atkin, which speaks volumes about the quality and reputation of Mendel Wines.

As the sun began to set, I decided to explore the nightlife on Arístides Villanueva, a bustling street known for its restaurants and bars. I ended up at Chachingo Arístides, a popular spot known for its craft beer and lively atmosphere. I enjoyed a glass of local beer, soaking in the energy of the street and watching the world go by. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of wine tasting and exploration. The selection of wine, beer, and gin was impressive, and the pan served was delicious. It's a great place for business meetings, groups of friends, solos, or couples.

For dinner, I chose La Gloria Cantina Cool, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Argentine cuisine and vibrant atmosphere. Located in Chacras de Coria, this culinary haven offers a menu focusing on high-quality meats prepared with expertise. The cantina is designed with vintage decor, creating a unique and inviting space that feels both modern and nostalgic. It’s a place where you can enjoy a relaxed yet lively atmosphere, embodying Argentine culture. I savored a perfectly grilled steak, accompanied by a glass of robust Malbec. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. La Gloria also functions as a grocery store, allowing visitors to purchase local products to take home, which I thought was a lovely touch. It was the perfect end to a day filled with sensory delights.

Tonight, as I reflect on my experiences, I feel grateful for the opportunity to explore Mendoza's wine region. It's a place of beauty, history, and passion, where winemaking is not just a business but a way of life. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to join Argentina Wine Tours and Trout and Wine Tours to discover even more of what this region has to offer. I'm also planning to visit WINE UP Tienda De Vinos to pick up a few bottles to take back to Berlin. I can't wait to share my adventures with Jürgen and Sophie, and I know they'll be eager to hear all about my experiences. Until then, I'll raise a glass to Mendoza and the magic it holds.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm reminded of the importance of taking the time to savor each moment and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. Mendoza has a way of slowing you down and inviting you to connect with the land, the people, and the wine. It's an experience that I'll cherish for years to come.
