A Day of Discovery in Mendoza

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of history, culture, and a touch of whimsy that only Mendoza could offer. From exploring ancient ruins to being mesmerized by dancing waters and ending the evening in a uniquely themed lounge, it was a day that truly captured the spirit of this Argentinian city.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Vico Restaurant. It was a delightful start to the day, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the air. I savored every bite, preparing myself for a day of exploration. The hotel's location made it easy to get around, which was a relief.

My first stop was the Ruinas Jesuíticas de San Francisco. As I approached the site, I was immediately struck by the sense of history that permeated the air. These ruins, dating back to the 18th century, are the remnants of a Jesuit church that was tragically destroyed by an earthquake in 1861. Standing amidst the crumbling walls and weathered stones, I couldn't help but reflect on the passage of time and the stories these ruins held.

The site was originally built by the Jesuits between 1716 and 1731. However, they were expelled from the country in 1767, after which the Franciscans took over until the earthquake struck. It's fascinating how the ruins are the only remaining vestige of the city before the earthquake, which led to a new plan for the city. Wandering through the ruins, I imagined the bustling activity of the church in its prime, the echoes of sermons and hymns filling the air. It was a humbling experience to stand where so much history had unfolded. I even learned that several international conferences are taking place in Mendoza this month, including one on dermatology and skin diseases that was today, May 8th. I made a mental note to see if I could attend any of them, with Jürgen's encouragement of course. He always loved me attending anything related to my blog.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

After immersing myself in the past, I made my way to Plaza Independencia, the heart of Mendoza. The plaza was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the beautiful weather. My destination was the Fuente de Aguas Danzantes, the dancing water fountain. As I waited for the show to begin, I took in the vibrant atmosphere of the plaza, the laughter of children, and the chatter of friends catching up.

When the show finally started, I was completely captivated. The fountain came to life with a mesmerizing display of water, lights, and music. The jets of water danced in perfect synchronicity with the music, creating a stunning visual spectacle. I learned that the fountain operates from Tuesdays to Sundays and holidays, offering a 90-minute show from 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM. It was a truly enchanting experience, a perfect blend of art and technology.

As the sun began to set, I decided to explore Mendoza's bar scene. I had heard about The Rabbit Lounge, a quirky and uniquely themed bar that promised a memorable experience. Intrigued, I made my way to the lounge, eager to see what it had in store.

Stepping into The Rabbit Lounge was like entering another world. The decor was whimsical and eclectic, with rabbit-themed decorations adorning every corner. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, with comfortable seating and soft lighting. I settled into a cozy nook and ordered a cocktail, eager to sample their creative concoctions.

The Rabbit Lounge is known for its innovative cocktails and its extensive wine list, and I was not disappointed. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable, guiding me through the menu and recommending a drink that perfectly suited my taste. As I sipped my cocktail, I couldn't help but admire the attention to detail in every aspect of the lounge, from the decor to the service.

For dinner, I chose 1884 Restaurante Francis Mallmann. The restaurant is located in Godoy Cruz, just outside the city center, and it took a short taxi ride to get there. The setting was beautiful, with a garden area and a nicely furnished main room. I was dining alone, but the attentive service and the pleasant atmosphere made me feel comfortable.

The menu was largely grill-based, showcasing traditional Argentine cuisine elevated to fine dining. I started with a grilled squid salad with Andean potatoes and quail eggs, which was delicious. For the main course, I ordered the rib eye steak with chimichurri and Patagonian potatoes. The steak was huge and flavorful, cooked to perfection. Although I couldn't finish it all, I savored every bite.

Before heading back to the hotel, I made one last stop at Picardo - Bar, Picadas y Amigos for a nightcap. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the evening. I ordered a glass of Malbec, Mendoza's signature wine, and savored the rich, fruity flavors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As I walked back to the Huentala Hotel, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the historical ruins to the dancing waters and the quirky bar scene, Mendoza had truly captured my heart. I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring, with a visit to the Mendoza Wine Experience and Bodega Ruca Malen on the agenda. I was particularly excited about lunch at Casa Vigil (El Enemigo) and dinner at Osadía de Crear, both of which promised to be culinary delights. And of course, a stop at Wine Up Tienda de Vinos Peatonal to pick up a few bottles to take home.

Tomorrow promises even more immersion into the world of Argentine wine. I'm particularly excited about the Mendoza Wine Experience, hoping to deepen my understanding of the region's viticulture. And visiting Bodega Ruca Malen, I’m hoping to learn more about their unique approach to winemaking. I can't wait to share those experiences with you all as well.

“To travel is to live.” Tomorrow, I intend to live a little more, one exquisite wine at a time.
