Exploring the Exquisite Wines and Landscapes of Mendoza
Day 14: A Final Toast to Mendoza: Reflecting on Wine, Flavors, and Lasting Memories
Savoring the last day in Mendoza with exquisite wines, gourmet meals, and unforgettable experiences at Lamadrid and beyond.
A Fond Farewell to Mendoza
As my Argentinian adventure nears its end, today was all about soaking in every last drop of Mendoza's charm. It was a day filled with rich flavors, stunning vineyard views, and a sense of contentment that comes from truly immersing oneself in a place. Though I'm excited about returning to Berlin, I know I'll carry the spirit of Mendoza with me.
The day began with a delightful breakfast at Azafran Restaurant. The pastries were flaky and buttery, the coffee strong and aromatic—just the fuel I needed for a day of wine exploration. Azafran itself is a beautiful establishment, a true culinary gem in Mendoza. I took my time savoring every bite, reflecting on the wonderful meals I’ve had here and knowing I’ll be back. It’s amazing that Azafran started off as a deli, and has evolved into one of Mendoza’s Michelin Starred restaurants. After all, I remember when I started my blog, it was just a hobby, and now look at it!

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Lamadrid Estate Wines. The drive there was scenic, with vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see, framed by the majestic Andes. Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the estate's beauty. The vineyards were lush and green, and the winery itself had a rustic elegance that blended perfectly with the landscape. The staff greeted me warmly, and I felt instantly at home.

The tasting at Lamadrid was an experience in itself. I sampled a range of their wines, from the crisp and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc to the bold and complex Malbec. Each wine told a story of the land, the climate, and the passion of the winemakers. I learned about their organic and sustainable farming practices, their use of native yeasts, and their commitment to preserving the natural essence of their wines. It was inspiring to see a winery so dedicated to quality and sustainability. I particularly enjoyed their Malbec Matilde, named in honor of Guillermo's mother, Matilde Lamadrid, who opened the doors to the creation of the Lamadrid winery. I found the story behind the wine so touching.
Wine is bottled poetry.
After Lamadrid, it was time for lunch at Bodega Kaiken. This winery, owned by Montes of Chile, has a fascinating history, dating back to 1920. The estate’s restaurant, Ramos Generales, is now overseen by Argentinian celebrity chef Francis Mallmann. The setting was stunning, with tables set amidst the vineyards, offering panoramic views of the Andes. The menu was a celebration of local and seasonal produce, with each dish expertly paired with Kaiken's wines. I opted for the grilled gnocchi, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The Kaiken Mai, their signature wine, was the perfect accompaniment, its rich and complex flavors complementing the dish beautifully. The winery also has sustainability in mind, and the wines are even vegan. I was thoroughly impressed by the entire experience.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Mendoza Wine Experience. This wasn't just a tasting; it was an immersion into the world of Argentine wine. The experience started with a tour of the vineyards, where I learned about the different grape varietals, the unique terroir of Mendoza, and the art of viticulture. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, sharing insights and anecdotes that brought the world of wine to life. Afterwards, we moved to the tasting room, where I sampled a selection of premium wines, each carefully chosen to showcase the diversity and quality of Mendoza's wine region. The sommelier guided us through each tasting, explaining the nuances of the aromas, flavors, and textures. It was an educational and enjoyable experience, deepening my appreciation for the art of winemaking.

As the sun began to set, I ventured into the city center for a pre-dinner drink at UNDER Wine Bar. This hidden gem, tucked away beneath a fast-food restaurant, was a delightful surprise. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, with soft lighting, comfortable seating, and a curated selection of wines and cocktails. The bartender was a true mixologist, crafting innovative and delicious cocktails with local ingredients. I opted for a Malbec-infused cocktail, which was the perfect blend of sweet, tart, and earthy flavors. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Dinner at Anna Bistró was the perfect ending to a perfect day. This charming bistro, located in a beautifully restored building, had a warm and inviting ambiance. The menu was a celebration of French cuisine with a local twist, showcasing the best of Mendoza's produce. I started with the smoked salmon, which was delicate and flavorful, followed by the lamb Malargüe, cooked to perfection and served with a rich and savory sauce. The wine list was extensive, featuring a wide selection of Argentine wines, as well as international favorites. The staff was attentive and friendly, making me feel like a valued guest. Anna Bistro is a haven in the city, and it reminds me of home.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my trip, and I plan to make the most of it. The itinerary includes a visit to Park Hyatt Mendoza, a tour of Argentina Tourism & Wine | Height, and a final shopping spree at The Vines of Mendoza: Tasting Room. It will be a bittersweet day, saying goodbye to this beautiful region, but I know I'll be back soon.
The Park Hyatt Mendoza looks like a luxurious hotel, and I am excited to see the architecture, as I know Jürgen would appreciate it as well. I am also intrigued by Argentina Tourism & Wine | Height, and I hope to learn more about the country’s tourism and wine industries. Finally, I plan to stop by The Vines of Mendoza: Tasting Room to pick up a few bottles of my favorite wines to take back home to Berlin. I am sure Sophie will enjoy them as well!
Thank you, Mendoza, for the memories, the flavors, and the inspiration. Until next time!
