A Day of Kimberley Dreams

Today was a day of exploring the raw, untamed beauty of the Kimberley. It’s a landscape that constantly surprises, with its ancient rock formations and hidden oases. The vastness reminds me of the open skies of Mali, but with a uniquely Australian charm. I couldn’t wait to see what adventures awaited us as we set off with my friends.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Kimberley Croc Motel. I opted for a simple toast and coffee, while some of my friends went for the full Kimberley Kracker Brekky. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the day's adventures, starting with the Wunaamin-Miliwundi Ranges.

The Wunaamin-Miliwundi Ranges, formerly known as the King Leopold Ranges, stretch across the horizon with their rugged beauty. The drive itself was an experience, navigating the unsealed roads that demanded respect and a good four-wheel drive. As we drove, the landscape unfolded before us, showcasing the dramatic geological formations that have been millions of years in the making. The park is home to rare plant and animal species, making it a haven for nature lovers.

Our first stop within the ranges was Adcock Gorge. The 5km off-road track to get there was definitely an adventure in itself, requiring careful navigation and a sturdy vehicle. Some spots were quite rocky, and I was glad we didn't bring a caravan. We parked before the creek crossing and walked the remaining part of the track. The trail was short but beautiful, leading us along and through the creek, where we spotted lilies and small fish.

The gorge itself was a hidden paradise. A deep green pool nestled between steep rock walls, fed by a small waterfall. The water was cool and refreshing, perfect for a swim after the dusty drive. Though there were signs warning of freshwater crocodiles, we decided to risk a quick dip. The solitude of Adcock Gorge was its best feature, offering a peaceful oasis away from the crowds. I could easily see why some claim it to be the prettiest gorge on the Gibb River Road.

After our refreshing swim, we headed back to the Gibb River Road and made our way to Gullivers Tavern for lunch. This lively spot in Kununurra is known for its quality Australian cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. We enjoyed a hearty meal of fish and chips and a refreshing Thai beef salad. The tavern also offers a wide selection of Australian beers, wines, and spirits. The friendly ambiance made it a great place to relax and recharge before our evening adventure.

Sometimes, the most memorable moments are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet appreciation of nature's artistry and the simple joy of sharing it with friends.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to El Questro Homestead for a truly unique dining experience. The El Questro Homestead is renowned for serving gourmet cuisine in dramatic locations. Tonight, we were treated to the Gourmet Camp Oven Experience.

The Gourmet Camp Oven Experience is a culinary adventure set in the picturesque outback of Kununurra. The secret location, nestled among iconic boab trees and rugged red cliff faces, provided the most spectacular Kimberley setting for our unforgettable four-course dinner.

As we arrived, we were greeted with complimentary drinks and the warm glow of crackling fires. The ambiance was magical, with the serenity of dining under the Kimberley stars. The multi-award-winning outback experience focuses on flavor and freshness, using a combination of locally sourced produce and bush tucker. Each dish was created before our eyes, cooked over coals and in camp ovens.

Our culinary journey began with Top End saltwater crocodile, prepared over open flames and enhanced with lemon myrtle and wild hibiscus jam. For the entree, we indulged in a mouth-watering potato rosti and wild-caught barramundi stack, seasoned with native pepperberry and saltbush. The main course was crispy skinned pork belly, slowly cooked in the camp oven and smoked over Indian Sandalwood embers, served with Ord Valley mango sauce. Finally, for dessert, we enjoyed a warm Ord River rum and chocolate brownie with vanilla bean ice cream. Live music played throughout the main course, adding to the enchanting atmosphere.

The Gourmet Camp Oven Experience is more than just a meal; it's an immersion into the heart of the Kimberley. The experience operates seasonally, following Leave No Trace principles, and proudly sources the vast majority of ingredients locally. It was truly a night of gastronomic indulgence, accentuated by the warmth of the fires and the stunning outback setting.

As we drove back to our accommodation under the starlit sky, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day we had experienced. From the rugged beauty of the Wunaamin-Miliwundi Ranges to the hidden oasis of Adcock Gorge and the culinary magic of the Gourmet Camp Oven Experience, the Kimberley had once again exceeded all expectations.

Tomorrow, we're planning to tackle the Pentecost River Crossing and explore the Bungle Bungles [sic]. I've heard the crossing can be a bit tricky, so we'll need to be prepared. We'll grab breakfast at Spilled the Beans Cafe before heading out. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Seventy Nine West Outback Boutique. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and unforgettable experiences.

I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime. The Kimberley has a way of bringing people together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and appreciation for the natural world. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey.
