Pentecost, Bungles, and Boutique Finds
Today was a day of iconic Kimberley experiences, the kind that etches themselves into your memory. From the thrill of a river crossing to the awe-inspiring views of ancient landscapes, and even a little retail therapy, it was a day packed with adventure and discovery.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Spilled the Beans Cafe in Kununurra. I ordered a breakfast wrap and a strong coffee, needing the caffeine kick to prepare myself for the day's adventures. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day exploring the Kimberley. It's always a good sign when a place is popular with the locals; you know you're in for something good.
With our bellies full, we set off towards the Gibb River Road and the legendary Pentecost River Crossing. The drive itself was an experience, the landscape transforming into a rugged, vast expanse of red dirt and spinifex. As we approached the Pentecost River, the majestic Cockburn Ranges loomed in the background, creating a stunning backdrop.
The Pentecost River Crossing is more than just a water obstacle; it's an iconic Kimberley landmark. The water was flowing steadily, and I could feel a mix of excitement and trepidation as we prepared to drive through it. We made sure our 4x4 was properly engaged, and with a deep breath, we plunged into the river. The water splashed against the bonnet, and for a moment, I felt a surge of adrenaline. Thankfully, the crossing was smooth, and we emerged on the other side, triumphant. I have to admit, I felt a real sense of accomplishment.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
After conquering the Pentecost River, we continued our journey towards the Bungle Bungles, or Purnululu National Park as it's officially known. The drive from the Pentecost River to the Bungle Bungles is about 300 kilometers, so we settled in for a long but scenic drive. The landscape gradually changed as we approached the park, with the familiar red dirt giving way to towering sandstone formations.
As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, casting long shadows across the landscape, we arrived at the Bungle Bungles. The sight that greeted us was simply breathtaking. The iconic beehive-shaped domes rose majestically from the earth, their orange and black stripes creating a surreal and mesmerizing spectacle. It felt like stepping onto another planet.

We didn't have time for a full hike, but we took a short walk to a nearby lookout point to fully appreciate the scale and grandeur of the Bungle Bungles. From above, the landscape stretched out before us, an endless expanse of domes, gorges, and spinifex plains. The silence was broken only by the occasional bird call, adding to the sense of tranquility and isolation.
Before heading back to Kununurra, we made a quick stop at Seventy Nine West Outback Boutique. I was hoping to find a unique souvenir to remind me of our Kimberley adventure, and I wasn't disappointed. The shop was filled with locally made crafts, clothing, and artwork, each piece telling a story of the region. I ended up buying a beautiful piece of Aboriginal art, a vibrant painting depicting the Dreamtime stories of the local people.
