Oases in the Outback

Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of the Kimberley. After a fulfilling first day, I was eager to delve deeper into what this remarkable region had to offer. With my friends, I set out to explore some of its most stunning gorges and savor the local flavors. It was a day filled with adventure, delicious food, and a newfound appreciation for the unique spirit of the Australian outback.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Wild Mango Cafe in Kununurra. The café was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day. I opted for the classic bacon and eggs, while some of my friends tried the mango smoothie, a local favorite. The atmosphere was cheerful, and the service was quick and friendly, setting a positive tone for the adventures ahead.

Fuelled up and ready to go, we headed towards Emma Gorge, located within El Questro Wilderness Park. The drive itself was an experience, with the landscape transforming from dusty plains to rugged red rock formations. As we approached the gorge, the air grew cooler, and the anticipation mounted. The walk to Emma Gorge was a bit challenging, involving some rock scrambling and creek crossings. But the effort was more than worth it. The towering red cliffs, the lush greenery, and the sound of the waterfall created a surreal oasis in the middle of the outback.

We took our time exploring the gorge, marveling at the unique ecosystem that thrives in this secluded spot. The waterfall cascaded into a refreshing pool, and despite the initial chill, we couldn't resist taking a dip. The water was invigorating, and swimming beneath the falls was like receiving a natural massage. It was a truly magical experience, one that I'll cherish for a long time.

After Emma Gorge, we set our sights on Galvans Gorge, another gem along the Gibb River Road. This gorge was much more accessible, with a relatively easy walk to the waterhole. The landscape was equally stunning, with a small waterfall flowing into a horseshoe-shaped pool. We spent a relaxing afternoon swimming in the cool waters and admiring the ancient Wandjina rock art on the gorge walls. It was a peaceful and serene setting, perfect for unwinding after our earlier hike.

The Kimberley is a land of contrasts, where rugged landscapes meet tranquil waterholes, and ancient history blends with modern adventure.

For lunch, we stopped at Kimbercrust Bakery & Top End Ice in Kununurra. This bakery is a local institution, known for its delicious pies, pastries, and ice cream. I opted for a classic meat pie, while my friends tried the sausage rolls and apple pie. Everything was freshly baked and incredibly satisfying. The ice cream was a welcome treat in the warm afternoon sun. It was a perfect spot to refuel and recharge before our evening activity.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Hoochery Distillery, the oldest continually operating legal distillery in Western Australia. This distillery is a true Kimberley icon, producing award-winning rum and other spirits from local sugarcane. We took a tour of the distillery, learning about the rum-making process from start to finish. The tour guide was passionate and knowledgeable, sharing stories about the distillery's history and the unique character of its spirits.

Of course, no visit to the Hoochery would be complete without a tasting. We sampled a range of rums, gins, and liqueurs, each with its own distinct flavor profile. The Ord River Rum was a particular standout, with its smooth, complex taste and hints of caramel and vanilla. We also indulged in the famous Ord River rum cake, a delicious treat that perfectly complemented the spirits. The Hoochery was a fantastic experience, offering a glimpse into the Kimberley's unique culinary scene.

For dinner, we decided to try the PumpHouse Kununurra, a restaurant housed in a historic pump station overlooking Lake Kununurra. The setting was stunning, with panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding landscape. The restaurant itself was a fascinating blend of industrial charm and modern elegance. We chose to sit on the outdoor balcony, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the breathtaking sunset.

The menu at the PumpHouse featured modern Australian cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. I opted for the barramundi, a local fish that was cooked to perfection. My friends tried the steak and the pasta, both of which were equally delicious. The service was attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated. The PumpHouse was the perfect ending to a day of adventure and exploration.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of the Kimberley. From the towering gorges to the tranquil waterholes, from the bustling cafes to the historic distillery, this region has something for everyone. And as I think about tomorrow, I am excited to visit Mitchell River National Park and Bradshaw Rock Art. I am also looking forward to stopping by Penney's Prints - local photography and printing service. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these adventures with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime. The Kimberley is a truly special place, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

The Kimberley has a way of captivating your soul, reminding you of the simple joys in life and the importance of connecting with nature and each other. As we head into day three, I'm excited to continue exploring this remarkable region and sharing its wonders with you all.

I must remember to charge my portable phone charger and get a first aid kit, I knew I forgot something!
