Exploring the Untamed Beauty of The Kimberley with Friends
Day 1: Dust, Gorges, and Gourmet: My Kimberley Adventure Begins!
Embark on an unforgettable Kimberley journey with friends! Gibb River Road, Manning Gorge, and gourmet camp oven experiences await!
The Gibb River Road Beckons
After months of anticipation, our Kimberley adventure has officially begun! The red dirt of Western Australia is a stark contrast to the familiar streets of Montreal, but I already feel at home in this rugged landscape. The vastness of the Kimberley is something else, and I'm eager to share every moment of this journey with you.
Our day started early in Broome, where after a hearty breakfast at the Kimberley Grande Sports Bar & Restaurant, we picked up our trusty 4x4. This beast of a vehicle is going to be our home and transport for the next 11 days, and I must say, it feels good to be prepared for the rugged terrain ahead. I made sure to stock up on essentials at the Gibb River Store, remembering Fatoumata's reminders to grab extra sunscreen and insect repellent – she always knows best. I still feel a bit guilty about forgetting the portable phone charger and first aid kit, but I’m sure we’ll manage. After all, a little improvisation is part of the adventure, isn't it?
With our supplies secured, we hit the Gibb River Road, a legendary track that cuts through the heart of the Kimberley. The drive itself was an experience. The ochre-colored earth stretched out before us, meeting the horizon in a hazy shimmer. The landscape is dotted with boab trees, their swollen trunks standing like ancient sentinels. Even though October is towards the end of the dry season, the weather was already heating up, and the road was living up to its reputation for being corrugated.

The Kimberley is a land that demands respect, offering unparalleled beauty to those who are willing to embrace its challenges.
As we bumped along, I couldn't help but think about my family back in Montreal. Aminata and Ibrahim would have loved this! I made a mental note to show them all the photos and videos I'm taking, hoping to inspire their own sense of adventure. Maybe one day, we can all come back here together. I know Fatoumata would appreciate the unique cultural experiences here as well. She would love to learn more about the Aboriginal rock art and traditions of the region.
Our first major stop was Manning Gorge. After setting up our tents at the campsite, we decided to embark on the 3km hike to the gorge itself. The walk started with a unique experience: crossing the Manning River. Thankfully, there was a dinghy and a rope to pull ourselves across, saving us from having to swim with our gear. I remember reading about people having to swim across in the past, using styrofoam boxes to float their belongings. I was grateful for the upgrade!

The hike was a bit challenging, especially in the afternoon heat. The trail was rocky and uneven, with some steep climbs. But the views along the way were worth it. The Kimberley landscape unfolded before us, a panorama of red rock, spinifex grass, and endless blue sky. I could see why this place is so special.
Finally, we reached Manning Gorge, and it was breathtaking. A massive waterfall cascaded into a huge, clear pool. We immediately jumped in, the cool water a welcome relief from the heat. Swimming in that gorge, surrounded by towering cliffs and the sound of the waterfall, was an unforgettable experience. It felt like we were in a hidden oasis, far away from the rest of the world. The falls weren’t flowing as strongly as they would earlier in the season, but it was still spectacular. Apparently you can climb to the top of the waterfall, but we decided to save that for another time.
After a refreshing swim, we headed back to the Mount Barnett Roadhouse and campsite, exhausted but exhilarated. As the sun began to set, we gathered around the campfire, sharing stories and laughter. The stars came out in full force, a dazzling display that is rarely seen in light-polluted cities. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this experience, for the chance to connect with nature and with my friends in such a profound way.
But the day wasn't over yet. For dinner, we had booked the Gourmet Camp Oven Experience, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Nestled amongst iconic boab trees and rugged red cliff faces, the setting was magical. We were treated to a four-course meal, each dish showcasing the flavors of the Kimberley. The chef, Josh, clearly has a passion for local produce and bush tucker. We started with Top End saltwater crocodile, followed by a wild-caught barramundi and potato rosti stack. The crispy skinned pork belly smoked over Indian Sandalwood embers was a particular highlight. And for dessert, a warm Ord River rum and chocolate brownie. It was truly a unique culinary experience, dining under the stars with live music. I even enjoyed a Matso's Ginger Beer – a perfect way to end the day.

As I write this, sitting by the campfire, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for what tomorrow holds. We'll be heading to Emma Gorge and Galvans Gorge, and I'm eager to see what other hidden gems the Kimberley has in store for us. I think I'll try the Wild Mango Cafe for breakfast before we head out. I’ve heard good things about it. And perhaps a treat from Kimbercrust Bakery & Top End Ice for lunch! I'm also intrigued by the Hoochery Distillery – a perfect way to relax after a day of exploring. It seems like the perfect way to end the day before dinner at PumpHouse Kununurra.
I am so grateful to be here, experiencing the raw beauty of the Kimberley with my friends. It’s a reminder that life is about adventure, connection, and embracing the unknown. And with that, I'm off to bed, ready to face whatever challenges and wonders tomorrow may bring. Goodnight from the Kimberley!
