Echoes of the Ancient Reef

Today was a day of stepping back in time, tracing the contours of an ancient seabed now etched into the rugged landscape of the Kimberley. Imagine, if you will, a world where a vast tropical sea covered this land, teeming with life and vibrant coral reefs. That's what Fatoumata and I, along with our friends, experienced today as we explored Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park and contemplated the Devonian Reef. It was more than just a hike; it was a journey through geological epochs.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Spilled the Beans Cafe. This little gem, as the name suggests, is known for its excellent coffee. Fuelled up, we set off towards Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park. The drive itself offered a taste of the Kimberley's vastness, the ochre earth stretching out under a sky so blue it felt like a canvas.

Arriving at Windjana Gorge, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. The gorge walls, carved by the Lennard River over millennia, rose majestically on either side, creating a natural cathedral. It's hard to fathom that these towering limestone formations were once part of a massive barrier reef system, rivaling even the Great Barrier Reef in its prime.

We embarked on the Gorge Walk Trail, a 3.5-kilometer path that meandered through this geological wonderland. As we walked, the layers of rock revealed stories of ancient marine life, with fossils embedded in the limestone walls like whispers from the past. The kids were fascinated, pointing out the various shapes and patterns, imagining the creatures that once called this place home.

The Kimberley is a place where time is measured not in years, but in epochs, where the landscape itself is a living museum.

The October heat was definitely something to be mindful of. Even though the dry season is ideal for travel, the sun can be intense. Sunscreen and water bottles were essential, and we made sure to take frequent breaks in the shade of the native fig and cadjeput trees that lined the river.

One of the most remarkable sights was the freshwater crocodiles basking in the shallows. These ancient reptiles, looking like living dinosaurs, added another layer of intrigue to the already captivating landscape. Aminata and Ibrahim were thrilled, though Fatoumata kept a watchful eye, reminding them to keep a safe distance. Seeing these creatures in their natural habitat was a humbling experience, a reminder of the delicate balance of life in this unique ecosystem.

As we continued our exploration, we came across the ruins of the Lillimilura Police Station, a stark reminder of the more recent history of this area. It served as a poignant contrast to the ancient history etched into the gorge walls, a testament to the layers of time that have shaped this land.

After our walk, we took some time to simply sit and absorb the atmosphere of Windjana Gorge. The silence was broken only by the calls of birds and the gentle lapping of water against the rocks. It was a moment of profound peace, a chance to connect with nature on a deep level.

For lunch, we had planned to eat at Kimberleyland Waterfront Holiday Park, but we were too far away, so we just ate some snacks we had with us. Later in the day, as the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way to the Kimberley Grande Sports Bar & Restaurant. I was hoping to catch a bit of a soccer game while enjoying a well-deserved drink. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists alike unwinding after a day of exploring. The bar had a good selection of beers and a menu featuring classic pub fare.

Fatoumata opted for a pasta dish, while I decided to try one of their prime cut steaks. The food was hearty and satisfying, and the service was friendly. It was a great way to end a day filled with exploration and wonder.

Our initial plan was to have dinner at El Questro Emma Gorge Resort. However, we were already comfortable and enjoying the ambience at Kimberley Grande, so we decided to stay put. Plus, the thought of driving further after a long day was not appealing.

As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of awe and gratitude. Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park is a truly special place, a testament to the power of nature and the enduring legacy of the past. It's a place that stays with you long after you've left, a reminder of the importance of preserving our planet's natural and cultural heritage.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park and Lennard River Gorge. I'm excited to see what other wonders await us in this extraordinary corner of Australia. I have heard that Tunnel Creek involves wading through water in a cave, so that should be quite the adventure !

Before heading back to our camp, we stopped by Kimberley Grande Sports Bar & Restaurant again for a nightcap. I enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere and the chance to chat with some of the locals. It's these small moments of connection that often make a trip truly memorable.
