Echoes of the Ancient Kimberley

Today was a day of exploration that felt like stepping back in time. The Kimberley is truly a land of ancient wonders, and I was eager to delve deeper into its mysteries. With my friends by my side, we set off to explore Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park and Lennard River Gorge. I was particularly excited, as I had heard so much about the unique experience of walking through a tunnel carved by water over millions of years. I made sure to pack my essentials, including my reliable torch, sturdy sneakers, and of course, my camera to capture every moment of this unforgettable journey.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kimberley Cafe in Kununurra. I opted for the Big Breakfast, needing plenty of energy for the day’s adventures. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day exploring the Kimberley. After breakfast, we did a little shopping at Walkabout Souvenirs. I picked up a small, hand-painted boab nut as a memento of my time here. It’s always nice to have something tangible to remind me of these incredible experiences.

Soon, we were on the road, heading towards Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) National Park. The drive itself was an adventure, with the rugged landscape unfolding before us. The ochre-red earth, the sparse vegetation, and the endless blue sky created a sense of awe and anticipation. It was a reminder of how vast and untamed this part of Australia is.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that take us deep into the heart of the earth, revealing secrets whispered by the passage of time.

Upon arriving at Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek), I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the Napier Range. This ancient limestone formation, part of a 350-million-year-old Devonian reef system, is a testament to the power of nature and the passage of time. We gathered our gear, switched on our torches, and prepared to enter the tunnel. The air grew cooler as we approached the entrance, and a sense of anticipation filled the group.

Walking into Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) was like entering another world. The tunnel, carved by the creek over countless millennia, stretched before us, a dark and mysterious passage through the heart of the range. The beam of my torch danced across the walls, revealing intricate rock formations, stalactites, and the shimmering surface of the water.

We waded through several permanent pools, the water sometimes reaching just over knee height. It was refreshing, and added an element of excitement to the journey. I couldn't help but feel like a true explorer, venturing into the unknown. As we ventured deeper, we encountered several species of bats clinging to the cave walls. Ghost bats and fruit bats, their eyes gleaming in the torchlight, added to the mystical atmosphere. I also kept an eye out for any freshwater crocodiles, though thankfully, we didn't encounter any.

One of the most remarkable features of Tunnel Creek is the collapsed roof near the center of the tunnel. Here, sunlight streamed in, illuminating the cavern and creating a cathedral-like space. It was a breathtaking sight, a reminder of the forces that have shaped this landscape over millions of years. I took a moment to simply stand and soak it all in, feeling a deep connection to the earth and its history.

Dimalurru (Tunnel Creek) is also a site of great cultural significance to the local Bunuba people. It was once used as a hideout by the Aboriginal leader Jandamarra, who was killed near the entrance in 1897. Knowing this history added another layer of depth to the experience. I thought about the stories and traditions of the Bunuba people, and their deep connection to this land.

After emerging from Tunnel Creek, we drove towards Lennard River Gorge. The drive was challenging, with the eight-kilometer access road requiring a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The road wound its way through rugged terrain, testing our driving skills and adding to the sense of adventure. Despite the challenges, the anticipation of seeing Lennard River Gorge kept us going.

Upon arriving at Lennard River Gorge, we embarked on a walk to reach the best vantage point. The walk was challenging, but the views along the way were simply stunning. The gorge itself is a dramatic chasm, with steep cliffs plunging down to the river below. The scale of the landscape was immense, and the beauty was breathtaking.

I spent some time simply sitting and taking in the view. The sun was beginning to set, casting a golden light across the landscape. The colors of the rocks, the vegetation, and the sky seemed to intensify, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the wonders of this ancient land. It reminded me of a quote I once heard:

“The earth has music for those who listen.”

As the day drew to a close, we began the drive back to Kununurra. We stopped at Hotel Kununurra for lunch. I opted for the grilled steak, enjoying the hearty meal after a long day of exploring. The hotel had a classic outback pub atmosphere, and it was a great place to relax and unwind.

For dinner, we enjoyed a meal at Berkeley River Lodge. The lodge offered a luxurious dining experience, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and stunning views of the Timor Sea. I savored every bite, appreciating the flavors of the Kimberley and the beauty of the surroundings. The Berkeley River Lodge is known for its exceptional dining, and it certainly lived up to its reputation.

They are also reminders of the importance of preserving these natural treasures for future generations.
