A Day of Kimberley Wonders

Today was nothing short of spectacular, a true immersion into the heart of the Kimberley. Leaving behind the comforts of our campsite, my friends and I ventured deep into El Questro Wilderness Park - Kununurra Office, ready to embrace the raw beauty and untamed landscapes that this region is renowned for. The day unfolded with a blend of exploration, delicious food, and moments of pure, unadulterated awe.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Kimberley Grande Sports Bar & Restaurant. It’s a lively spot in Kununurra, and the perfect place to fuel up before a day of adventure. I opted for a classic Aussie breakfast – eggs, bacon, and toast – while the others chose from the diverse menu that included prime cut steaks and wood-fired pizzas. The Sports Bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in the Kimberley.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off towards El Questro Wilderness Park. The drive itself was an experience, the landscape transforming into a canvas of red dirt, rugged ranges, and sprawling savanna. As we entered El Questro, the sheer scale of the wilderness was immediately apparent. Covering nearly one million acres, the park is a sanctuary of thermal springs, deep gorges, and unique flora and fauna.

Our first stop was the Cockburn Ranges Lookout. The imposing orange cliffs of the Cockburn Range rose majestically before us, shaped like a vast fortress. The view was nothing short of breathtaking, and we spent a good hour soaking it all in, capturing photos, and simply marveling at the ancient landscape.

The Kimberley is a place that etches itself into your soul, a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty that still exists in our world.

After the lookout, we decided to explore some of El Questro's famous gorges. We chose a trail that promised a moderate hike with a rewarding swimming hole at the end. The hike was challenging at times, requiring us to scramble over rocks and navigate through dense vegetation. But the effort was well worth it when we finally reached the waterhole – a crystal-clear oasis surrounded by towering cliffs. We dove in without hesitation, the cool water a welcome relief from the Kimberley heat.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Villarett Gardens. Though I was not able to find specific details about Villarett Gardens in the Kimberley, I imagine a beautiful garden setting with a licensed restaurant, offering a peaceful interlude amidst our adventurous day. We enjoyed a relaxing meal, savoring the tranquility and beauty of our surroundings.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Uncle Tony's Jungle Bar for a well-deserved drink. This bar is known for its relaxed atmosphere and refreshing beverages, the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. We shared stories and laughter, reminiscing about the incredible sights and experiences of the day.

For dinner, we opted for Kelly's Bar & Grill. This establishment is apparently the oldest business in Newport and the second oldest continuously operating bar in Washington State. I opted for the Fish & Chips, while my friends tried the burgers and chicken wings. The atmosphere was lively and the food was hearty and satisfying.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post under the vast Kimberley sky, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Today was a reminder of the incredible beauty and diversity of our planet, and the importance of cherishing and protecting these wild places. Traveling with friends has made this experience even more special, creating memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit King George Falls and Celebrity Tree Park. I've heard that King George Falls is an absolute must-see, with its cascading waterfalls and stunning scenery. And I'm intrigued by the Celebrity Tree Park, a unique attraction that I'm eager to explore. We'll start our day with breakfast at Wild Mango Cafe, grab a quick lunch at Subway, and then finish the day with dinner at Kununurra Country Club Resort. We might even check out The Sandalwood Shop for some souvenirs.

The Kimberley continues to surprise and inspire me at every turn. I am excited for what tomorrow will bring!

P.S. I must remember to buy a portable phone charger and a first aid kit when I get back to Montreal. I knew I had forgotten something!

Reflecting on the Vastness of El Questro

The sheer scale of El Questro is something that truly struck me today. As someone who grew up in Goundam, Mali, I am accustomed to wide open spaces, but the Kimberley is a different beast altogether. It’s a landscape that humbles you, reminding you of your place in the grand scheme of things. The ancient rock formations, the seemingly endless horizons – it’s all incredibly awe-inspiring.

I found myself thinking about my family back in Montreal. I know my children, Aminata and Ibrahim, would have loved exploring the gorges and swimming in the waterholes. I made a mental note to show them all the photos and videos I’ve taken, and to tell them stories of our adventures. Perhaps one day, we can all come back here together.

Fatoumata, my wife, would have appreciated the tranquility of Villarett Gardens. She has a deep appreciation for natural beauty, and I know she would have found peace and inspiration in that setting. I’ll have to find a way to bring a little piece of the Kimberley back to Montreal for her.

Connecting with Culture

As a Malian immigrant living in Canada, I am always drawn to experiences that allow me to connect with different cultures. While exploring the Kimberley, I’ve been particularly interested in learning about the Aboriginal history and traditions of this region. I understand that El Questro is located on Balanggarra Country, and I feel a deep respect for the traditional owners of this land. I am committed to learning more about their stories and perspectives, and to honoring their connection to this place.

I am aware that I am a visitor here, and I want to ensure that my presence is respectful and responsible. I will continue to seek out opportunities to learn from Aboriginal people and to support their communities. I believe that by engaging with different cultures, we can broaden our understanding of the world and build bridges of empathy and understanding.

The Importance of Travel

This trip to the Kimberley has reinforced my belief in the importance of travel. It’s not just about seeing new places; it’s about expanding your horizons, challenging your assumptions, and connecting with people from different backgrounds. Travel has the power to transform us, to make us more open-minded, compassionate, and understanding.

I am grateful for the opportunity to explore the Kimberley with my friends. These shared experiences have strengthened our bond and created memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. I encourage everyone to step outside their comfort zone and embark on their own travel adventures. The world is waiting to be explored, and there are countless opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with others.

Final Thoughts

As I close this blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. The Kimberley has captured my heart, and I know that this is just the beginning of my journey in Australia. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, and to continue sharing my experiences with all of you. Thank you for joining me on this adventure!

Until next time,
