Lyon's Charms: A Day of Discovery

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of historical grandeur and modern excitement that perfectly encapsulates Lyon. From the expansive Place Bellecour, to the architectural marvel of the Opéra National de Lyon, and finally, a taste of Lyon's nightlife, it was a day that engaged all the senses. Let me take you through my Saturday in this captivating city.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Le Poivron Bleu. It's a cozy spot, and as I settled in, the aroma of freshly baked bread and brewing coffee filled the air. I decided on their breakfast special, a flaky croissant with a side of creamy scrambled eggs, and a strong café au lait. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. It reminded me of the small cafes back in Goundam, where the sense of community is just as important as the food itself.

Fueled and ready, I set out to Place Bellecour, one of Lyon's most famous landmarks. Stepping onto the square, I was immediately struck by its sheer size. It's vast! The large open space was bustling with activity, families strolling, couples holding hands, and tourists snapping photos. The Ferris wheel added a touch of whimsy to the scene, its colorful cars slowly rotating against the clear blue sky. I took a moment to simply soak it all in, feeling the energy of the city thrumming around me.

The statue of Louis XIV on horseback dominates the square, a regal presence that speaks to Lyon's rich history. I spent some time admiring the architecture surrounding the square, each building telling its own story. The March sunshine was particularly lovely, casting long shadows and highlighting the intricate details of the facades. I found a bench and watched the world go by, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a vibrant city.

In the heart of Lyon, history dances with modernity, creating an unforgettable symphony of experiences.

For lunch, I ventured to L'octave, a restaurant known for its modern take on classic French cuisine. The interior was chic and inviting, with soft lighting and contemporary decor. I opted for their prix fixe menu, starting with a delicate salad of frisée lettuce, lardons, and a poached egg. For the main course, I chose the roasted chicken with seasonal vegetables. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, attentive without being intrusive. It was a truly memorable meal, a testament to Lyon's reputation as a culinary capital.

After lunch, I made my way to the Opéra National de Lyon. The building itself is a work of art, a seamless blend of neoclassical and modern architecture. I decided to take a guided tour to learn more about its history and significance. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing fascinating stories about the opera house's past and its role in Lyon's cultural landscape. I was particularly impressed by the main auditorium, its opulent design and perfect acoustics creating a truly magical atmosphere. Although there wasn't a performance today, I could almost hear the echoes of past performances, the soaring voices and dramatic music filling the space.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to dinner at LE PASSE TEMPS, a Michelin-starred restaurant that had been recommended to me by several people. From what I gathered, Chef Younghoon Lee masterfully blends French gastronomy with Korean influences. The restaurant itself was intimate and elegant, with a minimalist decor that allowed the focus to remain on the food. I chose the tasting menu, eager to experience the chef's culinary artistry firsthand. Each course was a revelation, a harmonious blend of flavors and textures that delighted the palate. The service was exceptional, the staff knowledgeable and passionate about the food they were serving.

The sommelier, also of Korean descent, paired each course with a complementary wine, enhancing the overall dining experience. It was an unforgettable meal, a true celebration of Lyon's gastronomic excellence. Reflecting on the experience, I thought about Fatoumata and the kids. Aminata would have loved the presentation of the dishes, and Ibrahim would have devoured everything without a second thought. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the flavors when I return to Montreal.

To cap off the night, I decided to experience Lyon's nightlife at Azar Club. Located in the Confluence district, the club is known for its electronic music and vibrant atmosphere. Stepping inside, I was immediately enveloped by the pulsating beats and dazzling light show. The crowd was diverse and energetic, all united by their love of music and dance. I grabbed a drink and joined in the fun, letting loose and enjoying the music. It was a far cry from the traditional Malian music I usually listen to, but it was a welcome change of pace. I even managed to pick up a few new dance moves, much to the amusement of my fellow dancers.

As the night wore on, I found myself reflecting on the day's experiences. From the historical grandeur of Place Bellecour to the cultural richness of the Opéra National de Lyon, and finally, the electric energy of Azar Club, Lyon had truly captured my heart. It's a city that seamlessly blends the old and the new, the traditional and the modern, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. I thought about how much Aminata and Ibrahim would have enjoyed dancing at Azar Club, and I made a promise to bring them here someday.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière and Parc des Hauteurs, delving deeper into the city's ancient roots and enjoying the panoramic views. I'm also looking forward to trying some new restaurants, including Agastache Restaurant for breakfast, LE F2 for lunch, and PRAIRIAL • Confluence for dinner. And of course, I'll be sure to check out Confluence, a modern shopping center that I've heard is quite impressive.

Back at L’Académie Hôtel Lyon, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Lyon had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and excitement. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of ancient ruins, panoramic views, and the delicious meals that awaited me tomorrow.

Before I close out this entry, I want to share a little something that touched my heart today. While at Place Bellecour, I saw a group of children playing near the Louis XIV statue. They were laughing and chasing each other, their joy infectious. It reminded me so much of Aminata and Ibrahim back in Montreal. It was a simple moment, but it reinforced the idea that no matter where we are in the world, the bonds of family and the simple joys of life are universal. It's these little moments that make travel so rewarding, connecting us to each other and to the world around us.

I am looking forward to sharing more of my Lyon adventure with you all. Until tomorrow, au revoir!
