Lyon's Secret Passages and Artistic Expressions

Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Lyon, seeking out those hidden gems that often go unnoticed by the casual tourist. It's these unexpected discoveries that truly make a trip memorable, offering a glimpse into the soul of a city. I was eager to explore the famed traboules, admire the city's artistic murals, and immerse myself in Lyon's rich silk-weaving heritage.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Table et Partage. The reviews I had read mentioned their outstanding French cuisine, and they were spot on. It's a charming place, and I savored every bite, feeling fueled for the day's adventures.

First on the agenda was a visit to the Traboule “Maison du Crible – Tour Rose”. Finding the entrance felt like stepping into a secret world. The Maison du Crible, also known as La Tour Rose, is a remarkable building with a stunning pink tower in its courtyard. I learned that it was built in the 16th century, possibly by the Italian architect Sebastiano Serlio. Wandering through the traboule, I was struck by the sense of history and the feeling of being in a secret world.

The true voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

Navigating the narrow passageways, I imagined the silk workers of centuries past using these routes to transport their precious fabrics, safe from the elements and prying eyes. The architecture was fascinating, a blend of Renaissance elegance and practical design. It was easy to get lost in the maze-like structure, but that was part of the fun. Each turn revealed a new perspective, a hidden courtyard, or a glimpse of the sky above.

Next, I set off to find the Fresque des Lyonnais. This mural is a tribute to Lyon's most influential figures throughout history. It was an impressive sight, spanning the entire façade of a building. I recognized figures like Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of *The Little Prince*, and Paul Bocuse, the celebrated chef. The *trompe-l'œil* technique used in the mural created a stunning illusion of depth, making the figures seem almost lifelike. It was a powerful reminder of the city's rich cultural heritage.

After soaking in the artistic and historical significance of the Fresque des Lyonnais, I decided to indulge in a traditional Lyonnais lunch at Restaurant A Ma Vigne. This *bouchon* came highly recommended, and I was eager to experience authentic Lyonnais cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and welcoming, with a distinctly local atmosphere. I decided to try the steak frites, a classic dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The steak was perfectly cooked and the fries were crispy and flavorful. The service was friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home.

With my appetite satisfied, I ventured into the heart of Vieux Lyon to visit Silk Saint Georges. As I stepped inside, I was transported back in time. The shop was filled with exquisite silk creations – scarves, ties, and fabrics of every color and texture imaginable. I learned about the history of silk weaving in Lyon, how it all began in the 16th century, and how the city became a center for silk production. I also had the opportunity to witness a demonstration of a traditional Jacquard loom, a truly mesmerizing experience.

The craftsmanship and artistry on display were remarkable. I spoke with the owner, Ludovic de la Calle, who shared his passion for preserving this unique heritage. He explained the intricate process of creating silk fabrics, from the initial design to the final product. I was fascinated by the level of skill and dedication required to master this art form.

Before heading back to the hotel, I enjoyed a delightful dinner at La Table 101. The restaurant was elegant and modern, with a sophisticated ambiance. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day's adventures and feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Lyon.

As I walked back to L’Académie Hôtel Lyon, the city lights twinkled around me, casting a warm glow on the ancient streets. Tomorrow, I plan to visit La Maison des Canuts and Mur des Tapis, continuing my exploration of Lyon's silk heritage. I'm also looking forward to experiencing the Black Forest Society bar, a place I've heard offers a unique and memorable atmosphere. I'm excited to see what new discoveries await me.

Lyon continues to surprise and enchant me with its blend of history, art, and gastronomy. It's a city that rewards exploration, inviting you to wander its streets, uncover its secrets, and immerse yourself in its vibrant culture. I am so glad I decided to embark on this solo journey.

And as Fatoumata always reminds me: “*N'oublie jamais d'où tu viens, mais n'aie jamais peur d'où tu vas.*” (Never forget where you come from, but never be afraid of where you are going.) This trip is a testament to that – honoring my roots while embracing new experiences.

Until tomorrow!
