Discover the heart of Shikoku with a thrilling journey through Iya Valley, savoring local cuisine and embracing the serene nightlife.
Adventures in the Heart of Shikoku
Today was nothing short of spectacular, a deep dive into the heart of Shikoku's Iya Valley. From the moment I woke up, I knew this would be a day of exploration and immersion into the local culture. The allure of the vine bridges and the promise of authentic Japanese cuisine made every step of the journey worthwhile. Though I missed Fatoumata and the kids, Aminata and Ibrahim, I relished the solitude, allowing me to fully absorb the beauty and tranquility of this hidden gem.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yuzuan Restaurant. Nestled in the Iya Valley, this restaurant is renowned for its traditional Japanese cuisine and warm hospitality. I savored a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with miso soup, grilled fish, and local pickles. The meal was simple yet satisfying, providing the perfect fuel for a day of adventure. The restaurant itself had a cozy ambiance, with large windows offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. It was a peaceful start to what promised to be an exciting day.

With breakfast concluded, I set off to explore the famed Vine Bridge in the Iya Valley. Known locally as Iya Kazurabashi, this bridge is one of the three most mysterious bridges in Japan. As I approached, I could see the bridge stretching across the Iya River, constructed entirely of woven vines. The history of the bridge is fascinating; it was originally built by the Heike clan, who sought refuge in the Iya Valley after their defeat in the Genpei War in the late 12th century. The vines could be easily cut down in case of enemy invasion.

Before stepping onto the bridge, I took a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship and ingenuity of its design. The bridge swayed gently with each gust of wind, and the gaps between the wooden slats offered glimpses of the clear river below. There were concealed steel cables that added to its structural integrity. Paying the 550 yen fee, I cautiously made my way across.
The Iya Vine Bridge is more than just a crossing; it's a passage through time, connecting us to the ingenuity and resilience of those who sought refuge in this secluded valley.
Each step required careful consideration, and the occasional sway of the bridge added an element of thrill. About 45 meters long and 2 meters wide, the bridge hangs 14 meters above the Iya River. Looking down at the clear water flowing beneath, I felt a sense of awe and respect for the natural beauty of the valley. The experience was both exhilarating and humbling, a reminder of the resourcefulness of the human spirit.
After crossing the bridge, I followed a path leading to the Biwa Waterfall. The waterfall, though not massive, was a serene spot surrounded by lush greenery. The Biwa Waterfall is 45m long, 2m wide and 14m above the water. The sound of the cascading water was soothing, and I spent a few moments simply enjoying the tranquility of the setting. According to local lore, the Heike clan would play the biwa (Japanese lute) near the waterfall, reminiscing about their past lives.
For lunch, I ventured to Kohanyu, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine and cozy atmosphere. This café is known for its single-plate lunches, such as Japanese omelet, pastas, or the Kochi specialty of tataki. I opted for the seared skipjack tuna, a local specialty, served with a side of rice and miso soup. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. The owner told me that everything on the menu was grown locally.

In the late afternoon, I explored more of the Iya Valley, driving along the winding roads that offered breathtaking views of the mountains and gorges. The valley is known for its remote hillside hamlets and abundant nature. I stopped at a few viewpoints to capture the scenery with my camera, trying to encapsulate the beauty of the landscape. The air was fresh and clean, and the solitude was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Montreal.
As evening approached, I made my way to Tosa Rokkon for dinner. Located in Kami, Kochi, this restaurant is celebrated for its authentic Japanese cuisine and modern dining experience. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly attentive. I decided on their tasting menu, which featured a variety of local dishes, each prepared with meticulous care. From grilled river fish to mountain vegetables, every dish was a testament to the region's culinary heritage.

After dinner, I looked for a nightcap at Bar Kohno. The bar had a laid-back atmosphere, with locals and tourists alike enjoying a quiet drink. I ordered a glass of local sake and chatted with the bartender, learning more about the history and culture of Kochi. The nightlife was quiet, but the friendly atmosphere made it a pleasant experience. Bars in Kochi close at 11pm.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the beauty and simplicity of the Iya Valley. The vine bridge, the serene waterfall, the delicious cuisine, and the friendly locals have all left a lasting impression on me. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and connection with nature and culture.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Ritsurin Garden and Shikoku Village in Takamatsu. I am eager to see more of what Shikoku Island has to offer, and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you all. Until then, safe travels!
