Reaching New Heights

Today was a day of pushing our limits, both physically and mentally, as we navigated the challenging terrain of the Choquequirao Trek Peru. The crisp mountain air and the promise of ancient wonders spurred us onward, creating memories that I know our family will cherish for years to come. Each step deeper into the Andes feels like stepping further back in time, connecting us with the spirit of the Incas.

Our day began, not on the trail, but in Cusco, with a hearty breakfast at Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse.

I opted for a traditional steak, hoping to fuel up for the day’s rigorous hike. Hans, ever the early bird, had already scoped out the best pastries, while Sophie was engrossed in her history book, mentally preparing for the day ahead. It’s moments like these, sharing a meal before an adventure, that knit us together as a family. After breakfast, we made our way back to the trailhead, eager to continue our journey. The morning air was filled with anticipation as we set off, knowing that today would test our endurance and reward us with unparalleled views.

The initial stretch of the trek led us towards Abra Choquequirao, a mountain pass at an elevation of 3,318 meters.

The ascent was demanding, with steep inclines and rocky paths that tested our resolve. I found myself relying on my hiking poles more than ever, grateful for the extra support they provided. Hans, with his carpenter’s strength, took the lead, his steady pace a comforting presence. Sophie, surprisingly, kept up with ease, her youthful energy seemingly boundless. I lagged a little behind, pausing frequently to catch my breath and take in the panoramic views. The Andes stretched out before us in all their glory, a tapestry of snow-capped peaks and verdant valleys.

The mountains whisper tales of resilience, and today, we listened intently.

As we climbed higher, the landscape transformed. The lush greenery of the lower slopes gave way to a more rugged terrain, with sparse vegetation and exposed rock faces. The air grew thinner, and each breath became a conscious effort. We stopped frequently to hydrate, sharing water and words of encouragement. I reminded myself of the reason we embarked on this journey – to challenge ourselves, to connect with history, and to create lasting memories as a family. Remembering our forgotten portable charger made me smile, a small reminder that even the best-laid plans can have minor hiccups.

Reaching Abra Choquequirao was a triumph. The sense of accomplishment was palpable as we stood at the summit, gazing out at the breathtaking vista. The world seemed to stretch out endlessly before us, a reminder of the vastness and beauty of our planet. We took a moment to celebrate our achievement, snapping photos and simply soaking in the view. It was a moment of pure joy, a shared experience that strengthened our bond as a family.

The descent from Abra Choquequirao was no less challenging than the ascent. The steep, rocky paths required careful footing, and we took our time, mindful of the potential for slips and falls. Along the way, we encountered other trekkers, exchanging smiles and words of encouragement. There’s a unique camaraderie among those who brave these trails, a shared understanding of the challenges and rewards of the journey.

As we descended, the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the landscape. The air grew cooler, and we layered on extra clothing to ward off the chill. Our destination for the afternoon was Choquequirao Puquio, an ancient Incan site known for its intricate stonework and strategic location.

Before exploring Choquequirao Puquio, we stopped for lunch at Taywa, a local eatery that offered simple but delicious fare.

We enjoyed sandwiches, savoring the flavors and replenishing our energy. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all seeking sustenance after a long day of trekking. It was a welcome respite, a chance to rest our weary legs and recharge our spirits.

Choquequirao Puquio proved to be as fascinating as we had anticipated. The site, perched at an altitude of 3,050 meters, offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. We explored the terraced agricultural fields, ceremonial platforms, and intricate stone structures, marveling at the ingenuity and skill of the Incan civilization. Sophie, with her keen interest in history, peppered our guide with questions, eager to learn more about the site’s significance. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was impressed by the engineering feats, noting the precision and craftsmanship of the stonework.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Kusikuy Restaurante for a well-deserved dinner.

The restaurant, known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine, offered a warm and inviting atmosphere. We indulged in local specialties, savoring the rich flavors and spices. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a celebration of our accomplishments and a chance to reflect on the incredible experiences we had shared.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Sun Gate and Qochapata. The prospect of discovering new Incan ruins fills me with excitement, and I know that the challenges of the trail will only make the rewards that much sweeter. Before heading back to our tents, I took a moment to stop by Choquequirao Trek Peru, a local shop, to pick up a few souvenirs to remind us of our travels.

As I lay in my tent tonight, listening to the sounds of the Andes, I am filled with gratitude. This journey has been more than just a trek; it has been a transformative experience, a chance to connect with history, nature, and each other. I am eager for what tomorrow will bring, knowing that each day on the Choquequirao Trek is a gift, a precious opportunity to explore the world and ourselves.

I am reminded of a quote I read recently:

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

And as I drift off to sleep, I know that our journey is far from over. The Choquequirao Trek has ignited a passion for exploration within us, a desire to seek out new adventures and discover the hidden wonders of the world. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings, knowing that whatever challenges we face, we will face them together, as a family.
