Echoes of the Incas

Today was a day of exploration and reflection, a journey deeper into the heart of Incan history. As a librarian, I'm always drawn to places where the past feels palpable, where you can almost hear the whispers of civilizations long gone. Today, Choquequirao offered just that, a chance to connect with the ingenuity and spirit of the Incas.

Our day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast at Organika Restaurant in Cusco [i]. The restaurant prides itself in using fresh, local ingredients from their own farm, making for a unique culinary experience. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventures. Sophie, ever the adventurous eater, tried a new fruit she'd never seen before, while Hans enjoyed a strong coffee to prepare for the day's hike. The warm atmosphere and friendly service set a positive tone for the day ahead.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set out to explore the Sun Gate, also known as Inti Punku. The trek to the Sun Gate was a challenging but rewarding experience. The air was crisp, and the views were simply breathtaking. As we ascended, I couldn't help but imagine the Incas who once walked these very paths, their footsteps echoing through time. The Sun Gate itself was a marvel, offering a panoramic vista of the surrounding landscape. It was easy to imagine the importance of this location as a control gate for those entering and leaving the city.

To walk in the footsteps of the Incas is to understand the enduring power of human ingenuity and the profound connection between civilization and nature.

After soaking in the views from the Sun Gate, we made our way to Qochapata, another significant archaeological site near Cusco. This hidden gem offered a more intimate experience, away from the crowds. As we wandered through the remnants of stone structures and terraces, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a chance to appreciate the intricate stonework and the harmonious relationship the Incas had with their surroundings. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the site, sketching the ancient terraces in her notebook.

For lunch, we ventured to Hacienda Huayoccari, a culinary gem nestled in the picturesque region of Huycho. The restaurant is located on a family estate that dates back to the 17th century. The ambiance was warm and welcoming, making it an ideal spot for a family meal. We indulged in traditional Peruvian flavors, savoring each dish crafted with locally sourced ingredients. Hans and I enjoyed a glass of Peruvian wine with our meal. The stunning views of the surrounding landscape added to the overall experience, creating a truly unforgettable afternoon.

As evening approached, we returned to Cusco, eager to experience the city's vibrant culinary scene once more. Dinner was at Inti House, a restaurant that prides itself on revaluing local products from the communities in the Sacred Valley. I opted for a traditional guinea pig dish, a local delicacy, while Hans enjoyed a hearty quinoa soup. Sophie, always eager to try new things, sampled a bit of everything. The restaurant's commitment to authentic Peruvian gastronomy was evident in every bite.

To cap off the evening, we decided to explore Cusco's nightlife, stopping by Cholos Brewpub for a nightcap. The atmosphere was lively, and the craft beer selection was impressive. We chatted with fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences from our adventures in Peru. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, we continue our journey, venturing towards Mirador Machu Picol and Machuqolqa. I'm excited to see what new wonders await us as we delve deeper into the heart of Incan territory. We'll be sure to stop by Ponchos Machupicchu Restaurant for breakfast, Pachapapa for lunch, and Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz for dinner. We also plan to visit Choquequirao Trail Shops to get some souvenirs. I am particularly looking forward to experiencing more of Peru's cultural heritage. I've heard that Mirador Machu Picol offers a unique perspective on the ancient city, and I'm eager to capture its beauty through my lens. Until then, good night from Cusco.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am reminded of the importance of preserving these historical sites for future generations. The legacy of the Incas is a testament to human potential, and it is our responsibility to ensure that their stories continue to be told. I am also reminded that I forgot to pack a portable charger and a travel pillow. I will need to purchase these items tomorrow.
