Cusco's Embrace: A Day of History, Nature, and Flavors
Today, Cusco revealed its many layers, offering a blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and culinary delights that captivated all of us. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to immerse myself in the stories of the past and the vibrant culture of the present.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food. It was a delightful start, setting the tone for the day with its cozy atmosphere and delicious Peruvian cuisine. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic flavors. Sophie was particularly fond of the fresh juice, while Hans enjoyed a traditional Peruvian breakfast dish. The positive reviews of KUSYKAY proved to be spot on; it's a gem near Plaza de Armas that shouldn't be missed.
Fueled and ready, we ventured out to explore Calle Loreto, a narrow street flanked by impressive Inca walls. Walking along this ancient path, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The precision and skill of the Inca architects were evident in every stone, a testament to their advanced engineering. The walls once belonged to the House of the Virgins of the Sun and the Palace of Wayna Capac. Calle Loreto connects the Plaza de Armas with the Coricancha, further highlighting its historical significance.

To walk through Cusco is to walk through time, each stone whispering tales of empires and resilience.
Next on our itinerary was the San Blas Waterfall and caves, a hidden gem nestled in the hills surrounding Cusco. The trek to the waterfall was invigorating, with the crisp mountain air and stunning views of the city. As we hiked, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Sophie, always the adventurer, was eager to explore the caves, while Hans appreciated the tranquility of the waterfall. The waterfall cascaded down, creating a serene atmosphere, and the caves offered a thrilling adventure into the region's geological history. Getting to the waterfall involved a walk from the city center, about 5 km, which took us roughly an hour.

After our adventurous hike, we were ready for lunch. We chose El museo de la papa rest, enticed by the promise of a unique culinary experience centered around the humble potato. The restaurant did not disappoint, offering a fascinating array of potato-based dishes that showcased the versatility of this Andean staple. Sophie, always curious about new flavors, tried a potato stew with local herbs, while Hans opted for a more traditional potato and meat dish. I enjoyed a creamy potato soup that warmed me from the inside out. It was fascinating to learn about the different varieties of potatoes grown in Peru and their cultural significance. The meal was not only delicious but also educational, providing us with a deeper understanding of Peruvian cuisine and agriculture.

In the afternoon, we indulged in some retail therapy at TEXTILES POMATAYLLA. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the textiles, each piece telling a story of Andean heritage. Diana Pomataylla's store brings the best of Ayacucho to Cusco, showcasing colorful, high-quality crafts including ceramics, altarpieces, filigree jewelry and woven textiles. It was a wonderful opportunity to support local artisans and find unique souvenirs to take back home. Sophie picked out a beautiful hand-woven scarf, while Hans found a traditional poncho that he couldn't resist. I purchased a few small textiles to decorate our home in Switzerland, each one a reminder of our incredible journey through Peru. It's inspiring to see how Diana Pomataylla brought the crafts from Ayacucho to Cusco, making it easier for travelers to appreciate the artistry of the region.

As evening approached, we made our way to Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer for dinner. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with both locals and tourists enjoying the delicious food and craft beers. We shared a few appetizers, including some tasty empanadas and a flavorful ceviche. For our main courses, Sophie and I tried the alpaca steak, while Hans opted for the traditional guinea pig dish. The food was excellent, and the craft beers were a refreshing treat after a long day of exploring. The friendly service and beautiful decor added to the overall dining experience. Chullos is known for its clean space, friendly service, and delicious Peruvian meals.

Before I turn in for the night, I must mention a small mishap – I realized I forgot my portable charger back at our accommodation! It seems I was so eager to start the day that I overlooked it. Thankfully, Hans had his, so we managed to keep our cameras and phones running. A travel pillow would have been great too. I'll definitely make a note to double-check our essentials tomorrow. After all, a well-prepared traveler is a happy traveler!
Looking ahead, I'm also excited about the possibility of enjoying a drink at the Best View Restobar Karaoke tomorrow night.
