Whispers of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today was a day of wandering, of letting Cusco reveal itself to me not as a tourist, but as a curious traveler. I didn't have a rigid plan, just a desire to soak in the atmosphere and uncover some of the city's lesser-known treasures. It was a day that reminded me why I love to travel – the unexpected discoveries, the connections forged over shared meals, and the feeling of being utterly present in a new place.

The morning began, as many mornings do, with a quest for coffee. But this wasn't just any coffee run; it was an opportunity to experience a little slice of Cusco life. We started our culinary journey at Inka Grill for breakfast. The restaurant was more upscale than what I expected but it was a nice way to relax and chat with Hans and Sophie. I enjoyed the homemade potato chips and a bottle of red wine. I opted for the Novo Andean Sampler and was glad that I did.

Fueled by caffeine and a growing sense of excitement, I decided to venture beyond the well-trodden tourist paths. My first stop was the Centro Arqueológico Qotakalle. I must admit, I hadn't heard of it before stumbling upon a small sign pointing the way. The site was small, but the tranquility was a welcome change from the bustling city center. I imagined what life must have been like centuries ago, as I wandered through the stone structures.

Next, I found myself drawn to Agua Dulce. It was a serene escape, a world away from the city's hustle. The sound of the water was incredibly soothing, and the surrounding greenery was a balm for the eyes. It was a reminder that even in a city as vibrant as Cusco, moments of peace and nature are never far away. Sophie was particularly captivated by the butterflies we spotted flitting among the flowers, her eyes wide with wonder.

The true essence of travel lies not in ticking off famous landmarks, but in embracing the unexpected detours and savoring the simple moments of connection.

For lunch, we ventured to Aqllawasi Chichería - Museo. The restaurant was a delightful fusion of gastronomy and culture and stood out due to its commitment to preserving the traditions of Peru. We indulged in traditional dishes and I made sure to try their signature chicha drink. The staff was eager to share insights about each dish and I learned about their cultural significance. The museum section enriched my experience beyond just food because of the artworks and artifacts that narrated stories from Peru's past.

As the afternoon unfolded, I stumbled upon a hidden gem – a small courtyard where local artisans were displaying their crafts. I found myself drawn to a vibrant textile, woven with intricate patterns that seemed to tell a story. After a bit of haggling (a skill I'm slowly but surely mastering), I purchased the textile, knowing it would be a treasured memento of my time in Cusco. Hans was immediately drawn to a woodworking stall, admiring the intricate carvings and chatting with the artisan about his craft. He even picked up a few new tips for his own woodworking back in Switzerland.

Dinner was at Sumaq II Cusco. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and played live music. They specialize in Peruvian and international food. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, savoring delicious food and reflecting on all that I had seen and experienced. The kids enjoyed the outdoor seating and beautiful views.

As night descended, I decided to experience Cusco's nightlife, so I headed to Republica Del Pisco - Cusco. The bar had a unique space that captured the essence of the magical city. They offered a great variety of cocktails and live music. It was the perfect place for a nightcap with friends. I savored a Pisco Sour, the quintessential Peruvian cocktail, and listened to live music, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about experiencing new cultures and connecting with people along the way.

As I walked back to our accommodation, the cool night air nipped at my cheeks. I thought about tomorrow’s itinerary. We plan to visit Calle Loreto and the San Blas Waterfall and caves. I’m also hoping to get some textiles at TEXTILES POMATAYLLA. I couldn’t help but smile, already anticipating the adventures that awaited. Cusco had surprised me, challenged me, and captivated me in ways I hadn't expected. It was a city that demanded to be explored, not just seen, and I was grateful for the opportunity to delve beneath the surface and discover its hidden depths. And I'm so glad I get to share these experiences with my family. It makes it all the more special.

I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that while walking around, I learned that November is the start of the rainy season in Cusco. So I’m stocking up on ponchos and umbrellas. I also learned that November 1st is All Saint’s Day, a deeply spiritual celebration when families visit cemeteries to honor their loved ones. It’s a blend of Christian beliefs with ancestral traditions.
