Echoes of the Past, Tastes of Today

Today in Arezzo felt like stepping through a portal into another era, a journey where the echoes of Etruscan and Roman civilizations intertwined with the vibrant pulse of modern Tuscan life. From the captivating collections at the Casa Museo Ivan Bruschi and the Gāius Cilnius Mæcēnās National Archæological Museum to the spiritual serenity of San Domenico and the exquisite flavors of local cuisine, every moment was a sensory feast. The day was a beautiful blend of historical immersion and culinary indulgence, creating memories that I know my family and I will cherish for years to come.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Taste.

It’s a charming spot, and the pastries were absolutely divine. With renewed energy, we set off to explore the Fondazione Ivan Bruschi - Casa Museo dell'Antiquariato Ivan Bruschi.

This museum, housed in the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, is a treasure trove of art and antiquities collected by Ivan Bruschi, a renowned antiquarian from Arezzo. As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I was particularly excited about this visit. The Casa Museo did not disappoint. The collection is incredibly diverse, featuring everything from Etruscan artifacts to Renaissance paintings. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the ancient coins and medals, while Hans was captivated by the antique furniture. Wandering through the sixteen rooms felt like traversing through different eras, each artifact whispering stories of the past.

In every object, a story; in every room, a journey through time.

Next, we ventured to the Gāius Cilnius Mæcēnās National Archæological Museum.

Named after the famous patron of the arts from Arezzo, this museum is located in the former monastery of St Bernard, built atop the ruins of a Roman amphitheater. The architecture itself is quite striking, blending medieval and Roman elements.

Inside, we were greeted by an extensive collection of Etruscan and Roman artifacts. The museum is renowned for its collection of pottery, especially the sealed Arezzo ware. I was impressed by the Euphronios Krater, a Greek vase depicting a battle between Hercules and the Amazons. The intricate details and vibrant colors were remarkably well-preserved. Sophie, with her keen interest in history, was engrossed in the displays showcasing ancient jewelry and coins. Hans, ever the craftsman, admired the intricate bronze work and the craftsmanship of the Roman sculptures.

After immersing ourselves in history, our stomachs started to rumble. We headed to Convivio for lunch.

This charming restaurant, located in Piazza Sant'Agostino, offers a delightful menu of Tuscan cuisine with a modern twist. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and we were quickly seated at a table overlooking the piazza. I ordered the *pappardelle al tartufo*, while Hans opted for a hearty meat dish, and Sophie enjoyed homemade pasta. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel before continuing our exploration of Arezzo.

With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to San Domenico.

This Gothic church, dedicated to St Dominic, is known for its asymmetrical façade and its precious artwork. As we stepped inside, we were immediately struck by the serene atmosphere. The interior is simple yet elegant, with light streaming through the stained-glass windows. The highlight of San Domenico is the painted crucifix by Cimabue, which hangs above the altar. This masterpiece of 13th-century art is truly awe-inspiring, and we spent a long time admiring its beauty and detail.

The church itself is a treasure trove of medieval and Renaissance art, with numerous frescoes and a glazed terracotta from the della Robbia school. According to some accounts, the walls served as a training ground for local painters during the 14th and 15th centuries. The gothic building, with its asymmetrical facade, is one of the most precious jewels of art and faith in Arezzo. Legend has it that the church even hosted the first conclave in history.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to indulge in a pre-dinner drink at Bar Centrale 1973.

This lively bar, located in the heart of Arezzo, has a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. We ordered a round of Aperol spritzes and watched as the locals gathered for their evening aperitivo. It was a perfect way to soak in the vibrant energy of Arezzo and unwind after a day of sightseeing.

For our final culinary experience of the day, we chose Buca di San Francesco for dinner.

This renowned restaurant, located near the Basilica di San Francesco, is known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine and its historic setting. Founded in 1929, the restaurant has hosted numerous celebrities and dignitaries over the years, including Charlie Chaplin and Salvador Dalí. The building itself is steeped in history, with frescoes and a medieval ambiance.

We started with the *crostini toscani*, followed by the *pappardelle al ragù di cinghiale* and the *bistecca alla fiorentina*. Each dish was a masterpiece, showcasing the rich flavors of Tuscany. The wine list was extensive, and we chose a local Chianti Classico that paired perfectly with our meal. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was both elegant and welcoming. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
