A Solo Escape to Iceland's Hornstrandir Nature Reserve
Day 7: Embracing the Wild: A Day of Icelandic Exploration
Discover the raw beauty of Hornstrandir and the charming town of Ísafjörður on a solo journey through Iceland's Westfjords.
A Day of Rugged Beauty and Charming Discoveries
The crisp Icelandic air filled my lungs as I set out to explore more of what the Westfjords had to offer. Today was a blend of untouched nature in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve and the cultural charm of Ísafjörður, a balance I was eager to experience. As I continue my solo journey, I find myself increasingly drawn to the stark contrasts and serene landscapes of this remote corner of the world.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Logn, restaurant & bar. Located in Hotel Ísafjörður, it was a convenient and cozy spot to fuel up before heading out. The diverse menu had something for everyone, and I enjoyed a traditional Icelandic breakfast while watching the town slowly wake up. The restaurant's lounge area looked inviting, a place I'd consider returning to in the evening for a relaxing drink.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I ventured back into the heart of Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. The weather in October is definitely unpredictable. The wind was strong, and the sky alternated between moments of sunshine and brief showers. I was thankful for my waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking boots, essential gear for navigating this rugged terrain. The reserve itself is a sprawling expanse of untouched fjords, windswept tundra, and dramatic cliffs. It’s easy to see why it’s known as one of Iceland's most isolated areas.
I spent hours simply walking, my camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this wild place. The landscape was painted in hues of brown and green, with the occasional splash of vibrant red from the autumn tundra. The silence was broken only by the sound of the wind and the calls of seabirds soaring overhead. I kept my eyes peeled for Arctic foxes, the only native land mammal in Iceland, but they remained elusive today.
To truly appreciate the beauty of Iceland, one must immerse themselves in its untouched wilderness, where nature reigns supreme and the soul finds solace.
Lunch was a welcome break at Kaffi Norðurfjörður, a charming restaurant with stunning harbor and mountain views. The fresh fish soup was exactly what I needed to warm up and recharge. The restaurant itself had a lovely, rustic feel, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff about the local area. It felt like a true taste of local culture, a perfect complement to the raw nature I had been exploring.

After lunch, I took some time to explore Ísafjörður itself. The town is small and easily walkable, with colorful buildings clustered around the harbor. I popped into Gjafaland, a local shop with a wide array of goods, from toys and books to Icelandic souvenirs. It was a great place to pick up a few small gifts for Hans and Sophie. I also appreciated the opportunity to support a local business.

Before dinner, I spent some time simply wandering through the town, soaking in the atmosphere. Ísafjörður has a surprisingly good selection of restaurants and bars. The harbor is the heart of the town, filled with fishing boats that add to its charm. I found myself drawn to the blend of old and new, the way the town has managed to preserve its history while still embracing modern life.
For dinner, I chose Edinborg Bistro, a spot recommended by several locals. Located in the cultural center, it had a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The menu featured Icelandic cuisine, and I decided to try the Plokkfiskur, a traditional creamy fish stew. It was hearty and flavorful, a perfect end to a day of exploring.

As I reflect on today, I realize how much I'm enjoying this solo adventure. There's something incredibly liberating about being able to set my own pace, to change my plans on a whim, and to simply be present in the moment. Hornstrandir has a way of stripping away the unnecessary, of reminding you what truly matters. And Ísafjörður offers a comforting sense of community, a reminder that even in the most remote places, human connection can thrive.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kvítar Lodge and perhaps enjoy a drink at the Hornstrandir bar [IfLastDayOfTrip, MergeIn “Trip End”]. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery, of embracing the unexpected, and of allowing Iceland to work its magic.
I did manage to find a gift for both Hans and Sophie. It was a bit difficult to find something, but I know they will both appreciate it. I did miss them both today, but I know they are supporting me from home.
I also realized that I did forget insect repellent and extra batteries. It is not too bad, but I could have used them both today.
The weather in October in Iceland is quite rough, but I am enjoying it. I know that it is not for everyone, but I am glad I came.
I am looking forward to tomorrow, and the rest of my trip. I am glad I came to Iceland.
The solitude of Hornstrandir is something that I will never forget. It is a place where you can truly disconnect from the world and connect with yourself. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience it. The untouched nature of the reserve is something that I will always cherish.
The Arctic fox is a beautiful animal, and I am glad that it is protected in Hornstrandir. I hope that one day I will be able to see one in the wild.
The seabirds of Hornstrandir are also amazing. It is incredible to see so many birds nesting in one place. I am glad that they are able to thrive in this remote location.
The wildflowers of Hornstrandir are also beautiful. It is amazing to see so many different species of plants growing in such a harsh environment. I am glad that they are able to survive in this remote location.
