The End of the Trail

As my eleventh and final day in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve draws to a close, a bittersweet feeling washes over me. This solo adventure has been more than just a trip; it's been a profound journey of self-discovery and connection with nature. The rugged landscapes, the unpredictable weather, and the sheer solitude have tested me in ways I never imagined, yet I find myself leaving with a heart full of gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hópið. It was a cozy spot, a welcome change from my camping stove, and the warmth of the place fortified me for the day's explorations. I savored every bite, knowing it would be my last taste of civilization for a while. The friendly locals added to the charm, sharing stories and laughter that made me feel like a part of their community, even if just for a fleeting moment. I was fueled for my next stop, Stórurðarlundur.

Stórurðarlundur was breathtaking. The hike there was invigorating, the crisp air filling my lungs with each step. The landscape was a tapestry of vibrant greens and earthy browns, a stark contrast to the icy blues I had seen earlier in my trip. The park itself was a haven of tranquility, with well-maintained paths winding through lush fields and offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and fjords. I paused to capture the scenery with my camera, wanting to preserve the beauty of this serene location. It was easy to see why this place was a favorite for those seeking peace and connection with nature.

The wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit.

Next on my list was Drangajökull útsýnisstaður, a viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the majestic Drangajökull glacier. The drive there was an adventure in itself, the winding roads revealing hidden valleys and dramatic coastlines. As I arrived, the glacier loomed in the distance, a colossal river of ice dominating the horizon. I spent a long time simply gazing at it, contemplating its ancient presence and the forces of nature that shaped it. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the earth's immense power and the importance of preserving its natural wonders. Drangajökull is the only glacier in the Westfjords and one of the few in Iceland not decreasing in size.

Before heading back to Ísafjörður, I stopped at Kaffi Norðurfjörður for a late lunch. The café was a welcome sight, and I eagerly ordered a bowl of their famous fish soup, a local delicacy. As I savored the warm broth, I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling a deep sense of contentment. I watched the locals interact, their faces etched with the stories of this remote land. It was a reminder that while I was just passing through, this was their home, their life, their connection to this unique corner of the world. It was a lovely experience, even though some reviews mention slow service.

Back in Ísafjörður, I decided to explore the town a bit before settling in for the night. I stumbled upon Geðræktarmiðstöðin Vesturafl - Nytjamarkaður, a local shop that seemed to be a thrift store. Always on the lookout for unique finds, I stepped inside and was immediately charmed by the eclectic collection of items. From vintage clothing to handmade crafts, the shop was a treasure trove of local history and creativity. I purchased a small, hand-knitted scarf as a memento of my time in the Westfjords, a tangible reminder of the warmth and ingenuity of the Icelandic people.

For my final dinner, I chose Logn, restaurant & bar, located in Hotel Ísafjörður. The restaurant had a modern and inviting ambiance, a perfect setting for a celebratory meal. I ordered a dish of freshly caught fish, savoring each bite as I reminisced about the incredible experiences of the past eleven days. The staff was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall sense of warmth and hospitality. Happy hour is apparently between 4 and 6 pm.

As I sit here now, writing these final words, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. This solo journey to Hornstrandir was a challenge, but it was also an opportunity to push my boundaries, to connect with nature on a deeper level, and to discover a strength within myself that I didn't know existed. The memories I've made here will stay with me forever, and I know that this experience will shape my future travels and my perspective on life.

Tomorrow, I will begin my journey back to Switzerland, carrying with me the spirit of Hornstrandir and the lessons I've learned in this remote and beautiful corner of the world. While there are no specific itinerary items for tomorrow, the trip back will involve a domestic flight from Ísafjörður to Reykjavik, followed by my international flight back to Zurich. It will be a long day of travel, but I am eager to return home, to share my stories with Hans and Sophie, and to begin planning my next adventure, inspired by the wild and untamed beauty of Iceland.

Until next time, may your own travels be filled with discovery, wonder, and a deep connection with the world around you.

P.S. I really should remember to pack insect repellent and extra batteries next time! They would have come in handy.
