A Solo Cultural Journey Through Kyoto
Day 5: A Day of Emperors and Castles: Delving into Kyoto's Regal Past
Step back in time as I explore Kyoto's Imperial Palace, serene gardens, and majestic Nijo Castle on a solo journey through history.
Echoes of Emperors and Shoguns
Today, I embarked on a journey through time, tracing the footsteps of emperors and shoguns in Kyoto. It was a day filled with historical grandeur, serene beauty, and a deep dive into Japan's rich cultural heritage. From the tranquil gardens to the imposing castle, every corner whispered tales of bygone eras. I'm eager to share my experiences and the insights I gained as I explored these iconic landmarks.
The day began with a delightful breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. The reviews I had read mentioned a very kind owner and an authentic Kyoto-style experience. It certainly lived up to its reputation! The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, and the vegan set menu was a revelation. Each of the many dishes was carefully prepared and presented, offering a unique and delicious taste of local cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the kiwi inari, a truly unique and unforgettable flavor combination. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.
My first stop was the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The crisp February air nipped at my cheeks as I approached the gates. The palace, once the residence of the Emperor of Japan, exudes an aura of dignified elegance. I joined a guided tour, eager to learn about the history and significance of this important site. The guide shared fascinating stories of imperial life, court ceremonies, and the political intrigue that unfolded within these walls. Wandering through the meticulously maintained grounds, I imagined the emperors of old strolling through the gardens, contemplating matters of state.
The Kyoto Imperial Palace is currently holding a special spring opening, exhibiting paintings and other works for the first time. I was lucky enough to see three plum blossom-themed cedar door paintings, which were beautiful.
The past is never dead. It's not even past.
Adjacent to the palace lies the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a sprawling green space that offers a welcome respite from the bustling city. According to a recent article, Kyoto Gyoen National Garden surrounds the Kyoto Imperial Palace and is home to a myriad of flowers. As I strolled through the garden, I was struck by the tranquility and beauty of the landscape. The meticulously manicured lawns, serene ponds, and carefully arranged trees created a sense of harmony and peace. It was easy to see why this garden was a favorite among the imperial family. Although it's still February, I could see the early signs of spring, with a few plum blossoms beginning to emerge. I took a moment to sit by a pond, close my eyes, and simply listen to the gentle rustling of the wind through the trees.
Lunch was at Anzukko, a gyoza bar tucked away in a small alley. This place was a real find! The gyoza were incredibly inventive and delicious. I especially enjoyed the Anzukko Gyoza, with its crispy, lacy edges and juicy filling. I also tried the Camembert cheese gyoza, which was surprisingly delightful. The restaurant itself was small and cozy, with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It was the perfect spot for a quick and satisfying lunch.
In the afternoon, I made my way to Nijō Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former residence of the Tokugawa shogunate. Stepping through the imposing gates, I was immediately transported back to the Edo period. The castle's main attraction is the Ninomaru Palace, with its stunning architecture, intricate carvings, and beautifully painted screens. I was particularly fascinated by the nightingale floors, designed to chirp like birds to alert the residents to intruders. As I walked through the palace, I could almost hear the echoes of samurai warriors and shogunate officials discussing matters of state.
The castle grounds are equally impressive, with meticulously landscaped gardens, serene ponds, and towering stone walls. Although the cherry blossoms weren't yet in bloom, I could imagine how stunning the castle would be in spring. I learned that Nijo Castle is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing and that there is even a special nighttime illumination event during the Sakura season. It seems I might need to plan a return trip in late March or early April to witness this spectacle.
Before dinner, I did a little shopping at D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO. I have read that D&DEPARTMENT KYOTO designs daily life and tourism in the region under the theme of long life design, I found some lovely souvenirs, including a beautiful handmade teacup and some locally sourced spices. The shop itself was located within a temple, which added to its unique and peaceful atmosphere.
For dinner, I chose Masayoshi Japanese Dining, drawn in by the promise of authentic Japanese cuisine. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a calming ambiance. I ordered a selection of dishes, including fresh sashimi, grilled fish, and tempura. Each dish was expertly prepared and beautifully presented, showcasing the skill and artistry of the chefs. It was a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion.
As I reflect on my experiences today, I am filled with a sense of awe and appreciation for Kyoto's rich history and cultural heritage. From the serene gardens to the imposing castles, every corner of this city tells a story. I am grateful for the opportunity to have walked in the footsteps of emperors and shoguns and to have gained a deeper understanding of Japan's fascinating past.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Heian Shrine, Philosopher's Path and Nanzen-ji Temple. I am excited to see Heian Shrine, as I learned that it is renowned for its towering torii gate. I'm also looking forward to a relaxing evening at Kyoto Star Bar.
It's been a full day, and as I head back to the Ace Hotel Kyoto, I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring. The cool February evenings here are perfect for reflecting on the day’s adventures, and I find myself more and more captivated by this beautiful city.
