Scent of Roses, Touch of Stone

Today was a sensory explosion, a day where the delicate fragrance of roses mingled with the rugged beauty of ancient canyons. The Dades Valley continues to surprise and enchant, revealing new facets of its charm with every turn. I'm excited to share the day's journey through the Roses Valley – a day of exploration that truly touched the soul.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at CAFE RESTAURANT ROOFTOP ATLAS DADES. The rooftop setting offered panoramic views of the valley awakening in the soft morning light. The traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with fresh bread, local honey, and strong coffee, was the perfect start to fuel our adventures. I couldn’t help but think of Max and Amara back in Heidelberg, wishing they could share this moment with me. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these flavors when I get back home, perhaps with a German twist, just to keep things interesting.

With appetites sated and spirits high, we set off towards the famed Roses Valley. The drive itself was a treat, with the landscape transforming into a tapestry of green fields and rose bushes stretching as far as the eye could see. Although the main harvest season is in late spring, the air was still perfumed with the subtle, sweet scent of roses. I learned that the Rosa Damascena, originally from Persia, is the star here, its petals destined for rosewater, essential oils, and perfumes. The industriousness of the local community is evident, with families tending to their rose gardens with evident pride. I imagined Amara twirling through these fields, her laughter echoing amidst the blossoms. I picked up a small vial of rosewater from a local vendor, a fragrant reminder of this enchanting place, and a perfect gift for Amara.

The beauty of the Dades Valley lies not just in its landscapes, but in the stories etched into its rocks and the scents carried on its breeze.
Next on our itinerary was the Canyon des doigts de singe, or Monkey Fingers Canyon. The name alone sparked our curiosity, and the reality did not disappoint. As we approached, the landscape shifted dramatically, with towering rock formations resembling, well, monkey fingers, reaching towards the sky. The canyon is a geological marvel, sculpted by centuries of wind and water erosion. We parked the car and ventured into the canyon, cameras in hand, ready to capture the surreal scenery.

The canyon walls rose high above us, creating a sense of awe and wonder. The sunlight filtering through the narrow openings cast dramatic shadows, accentuating the unique shapes and textures of the rocks. We hiked through the canyon, marveling at nature's artistry. It felt like stepping into another world, a place where time stood still, and the only sounds were the whispers of the wind and the occasional chirping of birds. The girls would have loved scrambling over these rocks, their imaginations running wild with tales of ancient Berber tribes and hidden treasures. I made sure to take plenty of photos, promising myself to create a scrapbook of this trip when I returned to Heidelberg.

Lunch was at Canyon Dades Restaurant, conveniently located near the canyon. We enjoyed a delicious tagine, savoring the flavors of Morocco while reminiscing about our morning adventures. I chatted with a local Berber man who shared stories of his ancestors and their connection to the land. It’s moments like these that make traveling so enriching, connecting with people from different cultures and gaining a deeper understanding of their way of life. I even tried a few Berber phrases, much to the amusement of my new friend.

In the late afternoon, we decided to stop by Riad Restaurant Pizzeria Marhaba for a refreshing drink. While it seemed a bit out of place to find a pizzeria in the heart of the Dades Valley, the cool drinks and friendly atmosphere were much appreciated. We sat on the terrace, watching the sun begin its descent, casting a golden glow over the valley. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to kasbah Amlal for dinner. The kasbah, a traditional Moroccan fortress, offered a unique dining experience. The ambiance was magical, with soft lighting, traditional music, and the aroma of delicious food filling the air. We indulged in a feast of Moroccan delicacies, savoring every bite. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey, for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of the Dades Valley with my friends.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, our final day, we plan to explore more of the Dadès Vallei itself and visit Entrée du canyon. I’m hoping to soak in every last bit of this magical place before we begin our journey back to Marrakech. I’m also planning to pick up a few souvenirs at Queen Shop By Ami to bring back home – little reminders of our Moroccan adventure.

Tonight, as I sit here writing, I'm filled with a sense of contentment. The Dades Valley has captured my heart, and I know I will carry its beauty and spirit with me long after I leave. From the fragrant roses to the towering canyons, this journey has been a feast for the senses, a reminder of the wonders that await those who dare to explore beyond the familiar. It makes me think of a Kandyan dance, I used to practice back in Sri Lanka, with its fluid moves, and colourful costumes - a beautiful expression of life.

I am also grateful for my friends, who made this trip so special. Sharing these experiences with them has created memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. Even the small things, like sharing a laugh over a clumsy attempt to speak Berber or helping each other navigate a tricky hiking trail, have strengthened our bond and made this adventure all the more meaningful.

And, of course, I can't forget the little things I forgot to pack – the power adapter and sunglasses. A reminder that even the most organized traveler can have a few mishaps along the way. But these minor inconveniences only added to the adventure, a chance to embrace the unexpected and learn to adapt to new situations.

As I drift off to sleep, I dream of roses and canyons, of tagines and Berber tales. The Dades Valley, you have been a true delight. I am already looking forward to the next adventure, wherever it may lead. The world is vast and full of wonders, and I am eager to explore them all, one fragrant rose and towering canyon at a time.
