A Day of Sensory Delights
Today was a symphony for the senses here on Naoshima Island! From soaking in an art installation to savoring local flavors and losing ourselves in panoramic views, it was a day that truly captured the essence of this artistic haven. I'm so excited to share all the delightful moments with you.
Our day began with the promise of exploration and immersion, and Naoshima certainly didn't disappoint. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of the sea and the subtle fragrance of the island's flora. Amara was practically bouncing with excitement, eager to see what artistic wonders awaited us. Maximilian, ever the architect, was keen to observe how art and architecture intertwined on this unique island. I, of course, had my camera ready, eager to capture every moment of our adventure.
We started our day with a delightful breakfast at Little Plum. This café-bar, housed in a renovated marine container, had a unique atmosphere. I opted for their homemade dry curry, a curried pilaf that was both tasty and filling. Maximilian enjoyed a hearty breakfast set, while Amara devoured a plate of fluffy pancakes. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

After breakfast, we headed to the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. This outdoor work at the Benesse House Museum is by Cai Guo-Qiang. The installation itself is a fusion of art and relaxation. It consists of rocks imported from China arranged in a circle around a Jacuzzi filled with Chinese medicinal herbs. Sadly, the Cultural Melting Bath wasn't available to experience today, but we were still able to admire the artwork. It was a fascinating blend of natural elements and artistic design, and I could only imagine how relaxing it would be to soak in the medicinal waters while surrounded by such unique sculptures. Amara was intrigued by the unusual rock formations, while Maximilian appreciated the Feng Shui arrangement of the elements.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on our itinerary was Danyama. We decided to traverse the mountain to take in the panoramic views. The walk was invigorating, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature. As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. From the top, we could see the islands scattered across the Seto Inland Sea, a stunning vista that stretched as far as the eye could see. Maximilian pointed out the architectural details of the Teshima Art Museum in the distance, while Amara was fascinated by the countless wind chimes installed in a forest. Each chime had the name of a loved one written on it, creating a symphony of gentle tinkling in the breeze. It was a poignant and beautiful tribute to memory and connection.

After our hike, we were ready for a delicious lunch at Aisunao. This Japanese restaurant, housed in a converted traditional house, is known for its flavorful dishes featuring organically-grown rice and vegetables. I was particularly excited to try their vegan options, and I wasn't disappointed. The meal was a delightful combination of flavors and textures, and I savored every bite. Maximilian appreciated the traditional architecture of the building, while Amara enjoyed the cute rice bowl depiction on the entrance curtain.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to unwind at One Rest. This guesthouse and café offered a serene atmosphere and stunning island views. We relaxed in the garden, sipping on refreshing drinks and enjoying the peaceful ambiance. Amara played hide-and-seek amongst the trees, while Maximilian and I simply enjoyed the quiet moment together.

For dinner, we ventured to Luke's Table. This restaurant is known for its exquisite pizzas made with fresh, local ingredients. We ordered a variety of pizzas, enjoying the crispy thin crust and the unique flavor combinations. The seafood pizzas were particularly delightful, showcasing the freshness of the local catch. The modern interior and the warmth of the wood stove created a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
