Finding Serenity in Amalfi's Gardens

Today was a day of exploring the quieter, more contemplative side of the Amalfi Coast. Away from the bustling crowds, we discovered hidden gardens and breathtaking viewpoints, offering a new perspective on this stunning region. It was a day to savor the beauty around us, both natural and cultivated, and to appreciate the slower pace of life here.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at La Preferita. This charming restaurant, recommended by several locals, lived up to its name – it quickly became one of my favorites too! The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of a cornetto (an Italian pastry similar to a croissant) and a cappuccino. Maximilian and Amara enjoyed a selection of local cheeses and fruits. The friendly atmosphere and delicious food made for a perfect start to our day. It reminded me of the small tea shops back in Gampola, where the simple act of sharing a meal felt like a warm embrace.

Fueled and ready, we set off to find Giardino della Pellerina in Furore. The drive itself was an adventure, winding along the narrow coastal roads with stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. As we arrived in Furore, the “painted village”, I was immediately captivated by the vibrant murals adorning the buildings. It felt like stepping into an open-air art gallery. We parked and walked towards the garden, a peaceful haven dedicated to love and local mythology.

Giardino della Pellerina is a relatively new park, opened a few years ago, and it’s easy to see the care and thought that went into its design. The park is dedicated to love, with a romantic setting perfect for couples. We strolled along Viale Cupido towards Piazzetta Afrodite, admiring the forty majolica columns with benches inscribed with verses from romantic poems and lines from love songs. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, and the views of the coast were simply breathtaking. Amara was particularly fascinated by the fountain with seven spouts, each symbolizing a different form of love. I shared the local myth about a forbidden love between a girl and a sailor, which gave the garden its name. It was a lovely, tranquil spot, far from the tourist throngs, where we could simply relax and enjoy each other's company. As we wandered through the garden, I couldn't help but reflect on my own journey of love with Maximilian. From our first meeting in Heidelberg to building a life together, our love story has been a beautiful blend of cultures and experiences.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that whisper secrets of love and history, inviting you to pause and reflect.

After soaking in the romance of Giardino della Pellerina, we drove towards Minori to visit Belvedere Mortella. This viewpoint requires a bit of a hike, involving climbing around 300 steps, but I had read it was worth it for the panoramic views. The path to Belvedere Mortella is along the Sentiero dei Limoni (Path of Lemons). The walk was invigorating, and the scent of lemons was heavy in the air. The views from Belvedere Mortella were, indeed, breathtaking. From this vantage point, we could see the entire coastline of Minori, with its colorful houses nestled against the hillside and the sparkling sea stretching out to the horizon. I took countless photos, trying to capture the beauty of the scene, but no picture could truly do it justice. Maximilian pointed out various landmarks, sharing his knowledge of the area’s history and geography. Amara, ever curious, peppered us with questions about the boats and the people below. It was a moment of pure joy, sharing the beauty of the Amalfi Coast with my family.

By lunchtime, we were ready for a satisfying meal. We decided to try Amalfi Terminal, a restaurant located near the port. The outdoor seating offered a perfect view of the bustling harbor, with ferries coming and going and locals going about their day. We ordered a variety of dishes to share: pizza fritta (fried pizza), tomato salad, and spaghetti carbonara. The food was simple but delicious, and the prices were reasonable. Amara particularly enjoyed the gelato, which she declared the best she had ever tasted. The service was friendly and efficient, adding to the overall positive experience. As we ate, we watched the boats bobbing in the water and listened to the lively chatter around us. It was a quintessential Amalfi Coast experience, full of life and flavor.

In the late afternoon, we decided to indulge in a little “dolce vita” at La Dolce Vita bar. We enjoyed refreshing drinks while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. I opted for an Aperol spritz, while Maximilian enjoyed a glass of local wine. Amara, of course, chose a fruity mocktail. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the beautiful weather and the lively music. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The bar reminded me of similar spots in Heidelberg, where friends gather after work to share stories and laughter.

For dinner, we chose Dei Cappuccini, a restaurant known for its fine dining experience. The restaurant is part of the Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel, offering stunning views and a sophisticated ambiance. We dressed up a bit and headed to the restaurant, eager to experience its culinary offerings. The menu featured a range of regional dishes with a modern twist, using fresh, local ingredients. I started with a delicate seafood appetizer, followed by a perfectly cooked pasta dish. Maximilian opted for a meat-based main course, while Amara chose a simpler option from the children’s menu. The food was exquisite, and the service was impeccable. The views from the restaurant were simply breathtaking, overlooking the coastline and the twinkling lights of Amalfi. It was a memorable dining experience, perfect for celebrating our family adventure on the Amalfi Coast.
