Chugging Through History

Today was a delightful blend of history, stunning scenery, and delicious food. I embraced the chance to explore more of Mount Pelion, and it certainly didn't disappoint. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're motivated by the promise of adventure!

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Souarè Anelion Pelion. Waking up in Anelion was a treat in itself; the crisp mountain air and the promise of a traditional Greek breakfast was the perfect start. Souarè was charming, offering homemade delights and exquisite coffee. It felt like a truly authentic Pelion experience, away from the more touristy spots. The warm hospitality made me feel right at home, a feeling I always cherish when traveling solo.

After breakfast, I headed towards Ano Lekhonia to catch the Train of Pilio. This historic railway journey was something I'd been eagerly anticipating. The little station at Ano Lechonia is picturesque. Designed by Evaristo de Chirico, it's an Instagram-worthy spot. As the train chugged along, the scenery unfolded in a mesmerizing tapestry of olive groves, stone bridges, and lush vegetation. It was a journey back in time, a leisurely ride that allowed me to soak in the beauty of Pelion at a slower pace. The train ride itself was a nostalgic experience, a reminder of simpler times.

The journey is the destination, especially when that journey is a scenic ride through the heart of Greece.

The Train of Pilio took me to Milies, a charming village with its own unique character. The journey itself was the highlight, but Milies offered a chance to stretch my legs and explore a bit before the return trip. From Milies, I made my way to Vizitsa, a village known for its panoramic views. Vizitsa panoramic square was everything I had hoped for and more. The vista was breathtaking, a sweeping panorama of the Pelion landscape. The traditional stone houses and vibrant flowers added to the charm, creating a scene straight out of a postcard. I spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, letting the tranquility of the place wash over me. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a moment of serenity amidst my travels.

Lunch was at Polydroso restaurant in Pouri. Although it was a bit of a drive, the reviews promised incredible food and even better views, and they weren't wrong. Perched high up, the restaurant offered stunning views of the Aegean Sea. The food was authentic Greek cuisine, prepared with local ingredients. I tried the lamb souvlaki, which was cooked to perfection. The charming waitress and the cozy atmosphere made it an unforgettable dining experience. I can see why people say it's worth the effort to get there.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at 1701 Wine Restaurant for dinner. It was a delightful culinary experience, with a focus on local cuisine and an impressive wine list. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to wind down after a day of exploring.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out Grappa Vino & Aperitivo. It seemed like the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration. The bar had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with a great selection of local wines and cocktails. I enjoyed a glass of wine while chatting with some locals, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Pelion's nightlife. It was a great way to end the day, experiencing the local culture and making new friends.

The weather was mild, with a high of 17°C (62°F), and there was a mix of sunshine and clouds. It was perfect for exploring, not too hot and not too cold. The air was crisp and clean, adding to the overall appeal of the region.

Reflecting on my day, I feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful part of Greece. Mount Pelion has a way of captivating you with its natural beauty and rich history. Each village has its own unique charm, and the people are warm and welcoming. It's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the local culture and connect with nature.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point for more stunning views and then perhaps check out the Pelion Ski Centre. Even though it's not ski season, I hear the views from up there are incredible. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Botanothēkē, a local shop.

As I prepare for another day of adventure, I'm filled with excitement and anticipation. Mount Pelion has so much to offer, and I'm eager to discover more of its hidden gems. It's a journey of self-discovery, a chance to connect with nature and immerse myself in a new culture. And as I continue my solo adventure, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing the unknown and trusting in the journey ahead.

I miss Maximilian and Amara terribly, and I know they would have loved today's adventures. I can already picture Amara's face lighting up on the train ride and Maximilian's appreciation for the stunning views from Vizitsa. I'll be sure to bring back some special souvenirs for them, a little piece of Pelion to share with my loved ones back in Heidelberg. Perhaps some local honey or a handcrafted trinket to remind them of this beautiful place. For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another exciting day in Mount Pelion.
