Summiting Pelion's Heights & Savoring Local Delights
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of mountain air and cozy taverns, of panoramic vistas and intimate encounters. It's days like these that remind me why I crave solo travel – the freedom to wander where my curiosity leads, to change plans on a whim, and to fully immerse myself in the rhythm of a new place.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Loukoulos. I savored a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, fueling up for the adventures ahead. It was a simple meal, but the freshness of the ingredients and the warmth of the café's atmosphere made it special. I overheard a local man sharing stories with the owner, their laughter filling the air – a reminder of the strong sense of community that thrives in these mountain villages.
With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I set out for the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point. The drive itself was a treat, winding through forests ablaze with autumn colors. The air was crisp and cool, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. As I climbed higher, the views became increasingly breathtaking.
Finally, I reached the observation point. The panorama that unfolded before me was simply stunning. From my vantage point, the landscape of Mount Pelion spread out in every direction. The rolling hills were covered in a patchwork of forests, olive groves, and vineyards, all painted in the warm hues of autumn. The Pagasetic Gulf sparkled in the distance, its calm waters reflecting the clear blue sky. I spent a long time there, just soaking it all in, feeling a sense of peace and connection to the natural world. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the beauty that exists when we take the time to seek it out.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments, in the quiet appreciation of a breathtaking view or the shared laughter over a delicious meal.
After descending from the observation point, I decided to explore the Pelion Ski Centre. I was curious to see what it was like in the off-season. While there wasn't any snow, the area was still beautiful, with hiking trails crisscrossing the mountain. I took a short walk, enjoying the fresh air and the peaceful surroundings. It's interesting to imagine this place transformed into a winter wonderland, bustling with skiers and snowboarders. Although the ski season typically begins in late December, the region is working to keep the center active year-round. Perhaps I'll have to return in the winter with Maximilian and Amara to experience Pelion under a blanket of snow.

As lunchtime approached, my stomach started to rumble, leading me to Synantisi for lunch. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign. I ordered a plate of spetzofai, a traditional Pelion dish of sausage and peppers cooked in a rich tomato sauce. The flavors were bold and satisfying, a perfect reflection of the region's rustic cuisine. As I ate, I struck up a conversation with a friendly couple at the next table. They were eager to share their knowledge of the area, recommending hidden gems and local traditions. It's these chance encounters that often become the highlights of my travels, offering a glimpse into the lives and perspectives of the people who call this place home.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Botanothēkē. This charming shop was filled with local herbs, spices, and natural products. I picked up a few souvenirs for Maximilian and Amara, including some fragrant mountain tea and a jar of homemade honey. I also couldn’t resist buying a small bottle of locally produced olive oil, eager to try it in my Sri Lankan-German fusion cooking back in Heidelberg. The shop owner was incredibly knowledgeable about the healing properties of the various herbs and plants, sharing fascinating stories about their traditional uses. It was a reminder of the deep connection between the people of Pelion and the natural world.

As evening approached, I made my way to Milies, a picturesque village known for its traditional architecture and rich history. The village square was bustling with activity, locals gathering to chat and enjoy the cool evening air. I found a table at the Salkimi, a cozy tavern with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The tavern is known for its traditional dishes and the welcoming nature of its owners, Antonis and Mrs. Mygdalios.

For dinner, I decided to try another local specialty, gulubassi, a hearty stew of three different meats cooked with vegetables in a ceramic pot. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the slow-cooking techniques that have been passed down through generations. The tavern was decorated with hand paintings by Zoe K. Dinou, adding to the traditional Pelion atmosphere. While savoring the delicious meal, I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and warmth of Mount Pelion.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Katarráktes Kissou and the Makrinitsa Central Square. I'm also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at cardamo OINOMAGEIREIO for breakfast, To Katofli tis Ketis for lunch and To Kima • Seaside Family Restaurant for dinner. And if I have time, I might check out Minelska bar in the evening. For now, I'm content to relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere of Milies, knowing that tomorrow will bring new adventures and discoveries. As the day comes to a close, I realize I forgot to pack sunscreen! I'll need to pick some up tomorrow. It is important to protect my skin, even in November, especially when hiking at higher altitudes.
The weather in November is mild, but variable, with temperatures ranging from 9°C to 17°C. It's also worth noting that Pelion's microclimate can vary significantly from village to village. So, it's always a good idea to be prepared for anything. I am looking forward to see what tomorrow brings.
