Discover Florence's artistic soul with visits to the Accademia and San Marco museums, followed by culinary delights and evening cocktails.
A Day Amongst Giants
Today, Florence wrapped me in its artistic embrace, offering moments of profound beauty and quiet reflection. It was a day to remember, filled with masterpieces, delicious food, and the gentle buzz of Florentine nightlife. Join me as I recount my journey through some of the city's most treasured sites.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Belcore. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, the perfect way to prepare for a day immersed in art. I savored a traditional Italian breakfast, complete with strong coffee and a freshly baked pastry. It was the fuel I needed for the wonders that awaited. Hans would have loved this place, he really appreciates a good coffee in the morning.

Our first stop was the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze. The anticipation was palpable as we approached, the line already hinting at the treasures within. Thankfully, we had pre-booked our tickets, allowing us to bypass the queue and step straight into the heart of Renaissance artistry. Even with the crowds, the experience was nothing short of breathtaking. The sheer scale and detail of Michelangelo's David left me speechless. It's a masterpiece that truly needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The Accademia is more than just David, though. It's home to an impressive collection of Florentine paintings, many from the medieval and early Renaissance periods. Wandering through the halls, I was struck by the evolution of artistic style and technique, from the delicate religious scenes of the 1300s to the more lifelike portrayals of the Renaissance. I made sure to take my time in each room, soaking in the beauty and history that surrounded me.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next, we ventured to the Museo di San Marco, a serene contrast to the bustling Accademia. Housed in a former monastery, the museum is home to an extraordinary collection of frescoes by Fra Angelico. The peaceful atmosphere of the cloister and the simple beauty of the monk's cells created a sense of tranquility that was deeply moving. Each cell is adorned with a unique fresco, each a masterpiece in its own right. The Annunciation, located at the top of the stairs, is particularly striking, its delicate colors and graceful figures radiating a sense of divine peace. Wandering through the museum, I felt a sense of connection to the monks who once lived and prayed here, their lives dedicated to contemplation and artistic creation. It was a welcome respite from the crowds and a chance to reflect on the power of art to inspire and uplift the human spirit. Aisha would have loved the colours in those frescoes, she's always been drawn to art and colours.

After our dose of Renaissance art, we took a stroll through Piazza San Marco. The square was alive with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists enjoying the beautiful weather. We paused to admire the statue of General Manfredo Fanti, a hero of Italian unification, and soaked in the atmosphere of this historic space. The square is a transportation hub, with buses and taxis coming and going, but it also has a relaxed, convivial feel. Cafés line the southern side of the piazza, offering a perfect spot to people-watch and enjoy a cappuccino. I imagined the philosophers, artists, and students who once gathered at the Gran Caffè San Marco, discussing ideas and shaping the future of Florence. I took a few photos, trying to capture the essence of this dynamic and beautiful place.

Lunch at Il Vezzo was a culinary highlight. The restaurant was cosy and inviting, with a menu that celebrated the best of Tuscan cuisine. I opted for a traditional pasta dish, handmade and bursting with flavour. The service was impeccable, the staff friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect spot to refuel after a morning of sightseeing and to savour the delicious flavours of Florence. The weather in Florence today was mild, a perfect early spring day with a gentle breeze and clear skies. Ideal for walking and exploring the city's many treasures. The temperature was comfortable, allowing us to stroll through the streets without feeling too hot or too cold. I was glad I had remembered to pack a light jacket, as the evenings can still be a bit chilly in March. I did forget my sunglasses though, which was a bit of a nuisance, but I managed to find a pair at a local shop.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Mad - Souls & Spirits, a trendy bar known for its creative cocktails. The atmosphere was buzzing, the music lively, and the drinks inventive and delicious. I tried one of their signature cocktails, a concoction of local spirits and exotic fruits, and savoured the vibrant flavours as I reflected on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with art, culture, and culinary delights. Mad - Souls & Spirits was the ideal spot to unwind and soak in the Florentine nightlife. I must remember to bring Hans here next time, he would enjoy the atmosphere.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Basilica of Santa Croce, the Museo Galileo, and the Loggia dei Lanzi. I'm particularly excited to visit the Basilica of Santa Croce, as it is the final resting place of many famous Italians, including Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. The Museo Galileo is also high on my list, as I'm fascinated by the history of science and the life of this brilliant and controversial figure. And of course, I'm looking forward to wandering through the Loggia dei Lanzi, admiring the sculptures and soaking in the atmosphere of Piazza della Signoria. Before heading back to our hotel, La Casa del Garbo - Luxury Rooms & Suite, I take one last look at the illuminated streets, promising myself to relive this day in my memories for years to come.
