Day 5: Echoes of Empires: Unveiling Marrakech's Historical Tapestry
Journey through time in Marrakech! Explore palaces, tombs, and museums, and savor exquisite Moroccan cuisine with family.
A Day of Discovery in the Red City
Today was a day of delving deep into Marrakech's rich history, a journey through time that left me in awe of the empires that once thrived here. From majestic palaces to solemn tombs and fascinating museums, Marrakech unfolded its stories layer by layer. Aisha was especially excited, and even Hans seemed captivated by the day's adventures.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Bakchich Cafe. The vibrant atmosphere and the aroma of Moroccan spices filled the air as we enjoyed traditional dishes. Aisha loved the vegan couscous, while Hans and I savored the tagine. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. I was so delighted to see how well Aisha was adapting to the local food.

First on our itinerary was the El Badi Palace. As we walked through the ruins, I couldn't help but imagine the grandeur that once was. The palace, built in the 16th century, was once a playground for Saadian princes and visiting diplomats. Today, it stands as a spectacular ruin of crumbling pisé walls and faded mosaic floors. Aisha was fascinated by the storks nesting atop the walls, their presence adding a touch of life to the ancient ruins. I tried to picture what it must have been like when the palace was in its prime, covered in gold and precious stones. Even in its ruined state, the palace exuded a sense of majesty. It was easy to imagine the opulent entertaining that once took place within its walls. Hans, ever the engineer, was impressed by the scale of the construction and the ingenuity of the design.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
Next, we ventured to the Saadian Tombs, a stark contrast to the ruined palace. These tombs, dating back to the 16th century, are the final resting place of members of the Saadian dynasty. Rediscovered in 1917, they stand as an architectural marvel, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of Moroccan artisans. The intricate tilework and serene courtyards created a harmonious blend of artistry and spirituality. Aisha was particularly drawn to the Hall of Twelve Columns, its delicate cedarwood dome and Quranic inscriptions leaving a lasting impression. The history of the tombs is fascinating. Sultan Moulay Ismail had decided to erase all traces of the Saadian dynasty, but he didn't dare destroy their graves. Instead, he ordered the entrance to the necropolis to be walled off, which is why they remained hidden for centuries. Standing there, surrounded by the tombs of sultans and princes, I felt a profound connection to the past.

Our historical journey continued at the Marrakech Museum, housed in the Dar Mnebhi Palace. The museum showcased a diverse collection of traditional art objects from different regions of Morocco. Weapons, carpets, costumes, and Berber jewelry offered a glimpse into the country's rich cultural heritage. Aisha was particularly intrigued by the exhibits of contemporary art, which blended traditional and modern styles. The palace itself was a work of art, with its central courtyard adorned with colorful zellij tilework and carved cedar wood. As we wandered through the museum, I was struck by the beauty and diversity of Moroccan art. Each piece told a story, reflecting the country's history and traditions. The museum also hosts cultural events, such as theatre and concerts, adding to its vibrant atmosphere.

After a day of exploring historical sites, our appetites were calling, so we had lunch at Chez Brahim Restaurant. The restaurant, specializing in Moroccan and Berber cuisine, was located just steps from Jamaa el Fnaa. We enjoyed a quiet meal, savoring the flavors of the local cuisine. Aisha opted for a vegetarian dish, while Hans and I indulged in the beef tagine. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, with live music adding to the atmosphere. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge after a busy day of sightseeing. I made a mental note to come back in the evening, as they sometimes have live music.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Kosybar Marrakech for a relaxing evening. The bar, set over several floors, offered stunning views of the city from its rooftop terrace. We sipped on refreshing drinks as we watched the storks nesting around the wall of the El Badi Palace. Aisha was delighted by the birds, their silhouettes against the setting sun creating a magical scene. The atmosphere at Kosybar was relaxed and sophisticated, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the evening. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring the city's historical treasures.

For dinner, we chose Le Trou Au Mur Restaurant and Roof terrace. The restaurant, run by the award-winning hoteliers behind Riad Farnatchi, promised an innovative menu inspired by the delicacies of forgotten Morocco. We dined on the rooftop terrace, enjoying the cool evening air and the panoramic views of the city. The menu was a delightful mix of traditional Moroccan dishes and classic British favorites. Hans opted for the Berber shepherd's pie, while I chose the eight-hour slow-cooked Meshoui lamb. Aisha, ever adventurous, tried the M'rouzia, a sweet and savory tagine with lamb, honey, and almonds. The food was exquisite, each dish a culinary masterpiece. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we are planning a day of adventure outside the city. We'll be heading to Palmeraie for quad biking and a camel ride, experiences I know Aisha is eagerly anticipating. I'm a little nervous about the camel ride, but I'm determined to embrace the experience and create lasting memories with my family.
As I reflect on today's journey through Marrakech's historical tapestry, I am filled with a sense of wonder and gratitude. This city, with its rich history and vibrant culture, has captured my heart. I am excited to see what adventures tomorrow will bring, as we continue to explore the magic of Marrakech.
Before heading back to Riad Elias, we enjoyed a nightcap at Kosybar Marrakech. The atmosphere was cozy, and the music was relaxing. It was the perfect way to end a long day of exploring Marrakech. The staff was friendly, and the service was excellent. I highly recommend this bar to anyone visiting Marrakech. It's a great place to unwind and enjoy the city's nightlife. I'm really surprised that this place is not higher on the list! We did not eat here as it was still early. However, it is one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset. The outdoor terrace is absolutely magnificent with a dazzling view. You can also admire the birds flying around a fantastic site. We sat on the terrace with a bottle of wine, and it's one of my most precious moments in Marrakech.
