Immerse yourself in the art, nature, and culinary delights of San Gimignano with Ngoc and Hans as they explore its hidden gems.
Finding Beauty in the Heart of Tuscany
Today was a day of simple pleasures and profound discoveries here in San Gimignano. Hans and I set out to explore the town's artistic side, connect with nature, and, of course, indulge in the local cuisine. It's amazing how much a single day can enrich your understanding of a place.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Chiribiri. This charming little spot is tucked away, offering a cozy atmosphere to start the day. I opted for a cappuccino and a pastry, while Hans enjoyed a more hearty breakfast with eggs and local cheese. The coffee was superb, and the pastries were fresh and flaky. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

With our appetites satisfied, we made our way to the Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Raffaele De Grada. Housed in the old monastery of Santa Chiara, the gallery is named after the Milanese painter Raffaele De Grada, who chose San Gimignano as his home. As someone who appreciates art, I was eager to see the collection. The gallery featured a diverse range of works, from Tuscan paintings of the 19th century to contemporary pieces. I was particularly drawn to the works of De Grada himself. His paintings beautifully captured the essence of the Tuscan landscape, with its rolling hills and vibrant colors. Hans, with his engineering mind, appreciated the structure and form of the more modern pieces. We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, discussing our favorite pieces and interpretations. It's always fascinating to see how art can evoke such different emotions and perspectives. The gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions, making it a dynamic space for art lovers. Being inside the old monastery added another layer of depth to the experience, the building's history as captivating as the art it housed.

Leaving the gallery, we sought out a different kind of masterpiece: the Bagolaro di San Gimignano - Albero monumentale. This monumental tree, a European Hackberry, stands proudly near the Archaeological Museum and the Library. It's estimated to be around 150 years old, with a trunk circumference of 4 meters and a height of 25 meters. As we approached, I was struck by its grand presence. The tree’s wide, rounded crown provided a welcome shade from the warm Tuscan sun. We spent a few moments simply admiring its size and age, imagining all the changes it has witnessed over the decades. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the enduring power of nature. I learned that this type of tree is also known as the “spaccasassi” because of its ability to grow in places without humus. Its wood was once used to make tools, and its fruits are enjoyed by birds.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of things: a quiet moment with art, the awe of an ancient tree, or the pleasure of a perfectly prepared meal.
For lunch, we chose Osteria Enoteca I Quattro Gatti. This osteria came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with stone walls and a cozy ambiance. We started with a selection of Tuscan cheeses and cured meats, accompanied by a glass of local Vernaccia wine. For our main courses, I opted for the pici cacio e pepe, while Hans chose the tagliata di carne. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, bursting with flavor. The pasta was perfectly al dente, and the cheese sauce was rich and creamy. Hans raved about the tenderness and taste of his steak. The service was attentive and friendly, making our dining experience even more enjoyable. It was the perfect place to relax and savor the tastes of Tuscany. I quattro Gatti is known for its modern takes on Tuscan dishes and excellent wine list.

After lunch, we strolled through the town, eventually finding ourselves at Il Negozio delle Curiosità. This charming shop sells artistic ceramics, all handcrafted by local artisans. I was immediately drawn to the colorful displays of fruit, nature, and Tuscan landscapes. Each piece was unique, reflecting the skill and creativity of its maker. I couldn't resist purchasing a hand-painted bowl with a lemon design, a little memento of our time in San Gimignano. Hans found a lovely ceramic tile depicting the town's skyline. The shop also offers custom ceramic items. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was happy to find such beautiful and authentic souvenirs.

For dinner, we decided to try La Mangiatoia, a restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant is located in a hidden street, giving it a cozy and intimate feel. The chef has been working there since 1982, which speaks volumes about the restaurant's consistency and quality. We started with the truffle carbonara, which was delicious. For the main course, Hans chose the Tuscan osso buco, while I opted for the gorgonzola flan. The osso buco was tender and flavorful, and the gorgonzola flan was rich and creamy. The staff was friendly and helpful, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. La Mangiatoia is known for its excellent price/quality ratio and is a popular spot among locals and tourists alike.

As the day drew to a close, we took a leisurely walk back to La Cisterna, our hotel. The town was quiet and peaceful, with the towers silhouetted against the darkening sky. Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of contentment. We had experienced the best of San Gimignano: its art, its nature, and its cuisine. It was a day of simple pleasures and profound discoveries. I am so grateful for these moments of cultural immersion. I’m also happy that I could share the beauty of Italian pottery with Hans, who usually doesn’t care much for shopping. It was a day that reminded me of why I love to travel: to connect with new cultures, to appreciate the beauty of the world, and to create lasting memories with Hans. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Viewpoint San Gimignano and the Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Experience La Rocca. I am excited to see more of this beautiful town and taste its famous wine. I am also looking forward to a relaxing drink at Gustavo Mescita Vini Enoteca [Tomorrow's Itinerary]. Good night from San Gimignano!
