San Gimignano in Full Bloom

Today was a day of simple pleasures and breathtaking views in San Gimignano. Hans and I embraced the leisurely pace of a Tuscan Sunday, soaking in the beauty and history that this medieval town so generously offers. It’s amazing how a change of scenery and a slower rhythm can rejuvenate the soul.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at dulcisinfundo. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Italian coffee filled the air, enticing us to indulge in a selection of local treats. I opted for a classic cornetto, while Hans enjoyed a slice of their homemade tart. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. After breakfast, we decided to take a scenic stroll to the Viewpoint San Gimignano.

The walk itself was a treat, with the sun casting a golden glow over the rolling hills and vineyards. As we approached the viewpoint, the panorama unfolded before us in all its glory. The iconic towers of San Gimignano pierced the skyline, creating a mesmerizing silhouette against the backdrop of the Tuscan countryside. We took our time, snapping photos and simply absorbing the serene atmosphere.

In the heart of Tuscany, every view tells a story, every sip of wine echoes the land, and every moment becomes a cherished memory.

Next on our itinerary was the Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Experience La Rocca.

As someone who appreciates a good wine, I was eager to learn more about this local specialty. We entered the tasting room, a cozy space filled with the rich scent of oak and grapes. The sommelier greeted us warmly and guided us through a tasting of several Vernaccia wines, explaining the nuances of each vintage. I learned that Vernaccia di San Gimignano is one of the few Tuscan white wines that can age well, developing complex flavors and aromas over time. The crisp, dry taste with its subtle almond finish was a delightful discovery, perfectly complementing the warm Tuscan sun.

After the wine tasting, we were ready for lunch. We chose LINFA Ristorante, drawn in by its charming outdoor seating and promising menu.

The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and convivial atmosphere. We shared a plate of handmade pasta with truffle sauce, savoring each bite as we watched the world go by. The flavors were rich and decadent, a true celebration of Tuscan cuisine. Hans, ever the adventurous foodie, also tried the wild boar ragu, which he declared was the best he’d ever had.

As the afternoon sun began to dip lower in the sky, we decided to explore the town’s narrow streets and hidden corners. San Gimignano is a treasure trove of artisanal shops and historical landmarks, each with its own unique story to tell. We stumbled upon a pottery studio where a local artist was crafting intricate ceramic pieces. I couldn't resist purchasing a small hand-painted bowl as a memento of our trip. Hans found a leather shop and bought a beautifully crafted belt, a testament to Italian craftsmanship.

Before dinner, we stopped by Gustavo Mescita Vini Enoteca, a cozy wine bar recommended by several locals.

The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with shelves lined with bottles of local and regional wines. We ordered a couple of glasses of Chianti Classico and a platter of local cheeses and cured meats, settling in for a relaxing pre-dinner aperitivo. The owner, Giorgio, was incredibly friendly and shared stories about the history of the enoteca and the surrounding area. It felt like we were part of the local community, sharing in their traditions and camaraderie.

For dinner, we had reservations at Osteria del Carcere, a restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan dishes and rustic ambiance.

The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet corner of the town, adding to its charm and intimacy. We started with a classic Tuscan antipasto, followed by a hearty bowl of ribollita, a traditional bread and vegetable soup. For our main courses, I chose the Florentine steak, cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Hans opted for the osso buco, a braised veal shank that melted in your mouth. The meal was a true culinary delight, a fitting end to a day of indulgence and exploration.

As we walked back to La Cisterna, the stars twinkled above us, casting a magical glow over San Gimignano.

The town was quiet and peaceful, a stark contrast to the bustling energy of the day. We reflected on our experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the beauty and culture of Tuscany.

One of the highlights of the day was discovering that San Gimignano was hosting the Ferie delle Messi, a medieval festival celebrating the harvest. The town was transformed into a vibrant tapestry of colors, sounds, and flavors, with locals dressed in medieval costumes, artisans selling their wares, and musicians filling the air with traditional melodies. We watched a jousting competition, marveling at the skill and bravery of the knights. The festival added an extra layer of excitement and authenticity to our experience, transporting us back in time to the medieval era.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into San Gimignano's history with visits to the Museum of Torture, Torri degli Ardinghelli, and Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca, Torre Grossa. I'm particularly intrigued by the Torre Grossa, as I hear the views from the top are unparalleled. We'll also be exploring Maria's Pelletterie San Gimignano & Volterra, a local shop known for its exquisite leather goods.

As I sit here writing, sipping a glass of Vernaccia on our hotel balcony, I can’t help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. San Gimignano has captured my heart with its beauty, charm, and rich history. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Looking back on the day, I realize that sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones that unfold organically, without too much planning or expectation. It’s about embracing the moment, being open to new experiences, and allowing yourself to be swept away by the magic of a place. And San Gimignano certainly has plenty of magic to offer. I'm so glad Hans and I decided to extend our stay here; it's been a truly unforgettable experience. I must remember to buy an adapter when we return to Berlin, as forgetting it was a minor inconvenience. I am also grateful that I remembered to pack comfortable walking shoes, as we certainly put them to good use today!
