First Impressions of Hoi An: A Journey Back in Time
After a long journey from Berlin, marked by the usual airport bustle and the kids' (thankfully minimal) in-flight squabbles, we finally arrived in Da Nang. The drive to Hoi An was a breeze, and as we approached our accommodation at Betel Garden Villas, a sense of calm washed over me. The promise of cultural immersion and relaxation was palpable, and I couldn't wait to dive into the heart of this ancient town.

Our first day in Hoi An was nothing short of enchanting. Stepping into Hoi An Ancient Town felt like stepping back in time. The golden light of the late afternoon sun bathed the centuries-old buildings in a warm glow, and the air was filled with the gentle sounds of daily life. The kids, initially weary from the journey, were immediately captivated by the colorful lanterns and the bustling streets. Even Hans, usually more interested in modern architecture, was visibly impressed by the town's unique charm. I felt a sense of excitement bubbling up inside me, eager to explore every nook and cranny of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

The weather in November is quite pleasant, with temperatures hovering around 27°C (81°F) during the day and cooling down to a comfortable 22°C (72°F) in the evening. We packed light clothing, but I did forget our mosquito repellent and sunglasses, a rookie mistake that I'll remedy tomorrow. Still, the light breeze made walking around town incredibly enjoyable. It was the perfect weather to wander and soak in the atmosphere.
Our exploration began with a leisurely stroll through the main streets of Phố cổ Hội An, the heart of the ancient town. The architecture is a mesmerizing blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influences, a testament to Hoi An's rich history as a major trading port. The narrow streets were lined with tailor shops, art galleries, and cafes, each vying for our attention. We passed by countless vendors selling silk lanterns, their vibrant colors adding to the town's magical ambiance.

The beauty of Hoi An lies not just in its ancient architecture, but in the way it seamlessly blends history with the vibrant energy of modern life.
For breakfast, we ventured to HOME Hoi An - HOME Vietnamese Restaurant, enticed by its promise of authentic Vietnamese cuisine. It was conveniently located near the ancient town, making it easy to access. The restaurant itself was a delight, accommodating up to 148 guests with both private rooms and outdoor spaces. We opted for a table in the open air, soaking in the morning's gentle sunlight. I chose a traditional Pho, while Hans went for a Banh Mi. The kids, predictably, wanted pancakes, which the restaurant happily provided. It was a delicious start to our day, and I felt a sense of satisfaction knowing we were supporting a local business.

After breakfast, we visited the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum, a place I had read about extensively before our trip. It was founded by Réhahn, a French photographer who has dedicated years to documenting Vietnam's ethnic minorities. The museum showcased a stunning collection of portraits, each telling a unique story of the people and cultures that make up this diverse country. I was particularly moved by the images of the children, their eyes full of wisdom and resilience. The visit was a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage, a theme that resonates deeply with me.

Lunch was at Madam Kieu Vietnamese Restaurant, a renowned establishment known for its diverse Vietnamese dishes and prime location on lantern street. We secured a table on the balcony, which offered panoramic views of the Thu Bon River. The kids were fascinated by the boats gliding along the water, their colorful reflections dancing on the surface. I ordered the Hoi An beef pho, while Hans tried the grilled beef with leaves. The vibrant flavors and fresh ingredients were a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality. The spring rolls were a hit with the kids, their crispy exteriors giving way to a delicious shrimp and meat filling. It was a truly memorable meal, enhanced by the stunning scenery and the warm hospitality of the staff.

In the afternoon, we dedicated some time to shopping, making our way to Reaching Out Arts & Crafts. This charming store is more than just a place to buy souvenirs; it's a social enterprise that supports individuals with disabilities by providing them with job opportunities and skills. The store offered an impressive collection of handcrafted items, from ceramics to jewelry to textiles. I was particularly drawn to the intricate designs of the ceramics, each piece telling a story of the artisan who created it. We purchased a few small gifts for friends and family back home, knowing that our money was going towards a worthy cause. The quiet atmosphere of the shop, a welcome respite from the bustling streets, added to the experience.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the town, we made our way to Secret Garden Hoian for dinner. This hidden gem, tucked away in a small laneway, was a true oasis of calm. The restaurant's lush garden setting, complete with a fish pond and old trees, created a tranquil ambiance that was perfect for a relaxing evening. We started with the crispy spring rolls, followed by the Cao Lau, a local specialty that I had been eager to try. The flavors were exquisite, a perfect blend of sweet, savory, and spicy. Hans opted for one of the amazing fish dishes. The kids enjoyed coconut drinks, while Hans and I savored some cocktails.

Before dinner, I took a peek at the One Day More Homestay Hoi An. It looked very nice and I will consider it for a future trip.
The day ended with a leisurely stroll along the Thu Bon River, now illuminated by thousands of colorful lanterns. It felt like a dream, the gentle breeze carrying the scent of incense and the sounds of traditional music. I bought a few paper lanterns from a local vendor and released them into the river with the kids, making wishes for a happy and healthy future. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a memory that I will cherish forever.
Tomorrow, we're planning to immerse ourselves further in the local culture with a visit to Hoi An Village Experience and Hoi An Handicraft Village. We'll also explore the Cam Thanh Rice Fields, a landscape I'm particularly excited to photograph. And, if we have time, we might just sneak in a drink at Tiger Tiger Bar. Until then, goodnight from Hoi An!
As I reflect on our first day, I am struck by the resilience and warmth of the Vietnamese people. Despite the challenges they have faced, they have managed to preserve their cultural heritage and create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors from all over the world. Hoi An is more than just a tourist destination; it's a living testament to the power of community and the enduring beauty of tradition. It is a place that touches the soul and leaves a lasting impression on the heart.
