Day 3: Chasing Smoke and Valley Views: A Day of Awe in Chapada Diamantina
Hiked to Cachoeira da Fumaça & explored Vale do Pati in Chapada Diamantina. Breathtaking views, & unforgettable moments in Brazil's heartland.
In Pursuit of Nature's Grandeur
Today was a day of immense beauty and physical challenge, the kind that etches itself into your memory. Chapada Diamantina National Park has a way of making you feel small yet connected to something much larger than yourself. It was a day filled with panoramic vistas, the thrill of a challenging hike, and the simple joy of being immersed in nature.
My day began early, fueled by excitement and a quick breakfast at my campsite within the park. The destination was Cachoeira da Fumaça, one of Brazil's highest waterfalls. I had read so much about it, seen countless pictures, but nothing truly prepares you for the experience of standing before it. The trailhead was a bit of a drive, and as I bumped along the road, I was grateful for the detailed instructions I had gathered before leaving Berlin. It reminded me of cycling through Brandenburg, except instead of quaint villages, I was passing towering mesas. I missed Hans, though. He would have loved this drive.

The initial ascent was definitely the most challenging part of the hike to Cachoeira da Fumaça. The trail is about 12 km round trip, and those first two kilometers were almost straight uphill. I felt the burn in my thighs and the familiar rhythm of my breath as I pushed onward. I was glad I hadn't forgotten my hiking boots; they were essential on this rocky terrain. I even passed some fellow travelers who were struggling quite a bit with the climb. It reminded me a bit of my initial days as a nurse – a tough start that eventually leads to something rewarding.
Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
Once I conquered the initial climb, the trail leveled out, and the views became increasingly stunning. Patches of vibrant green vegetation punctuated the reddish-brown landscape, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers. The walk became a meditation, one foot in front of the other, mindfully absorbing the beauty around me. I thought about my patients back in Berlin. I hoped they were doing well and felt a pang of guilt for being so far away. But then I remembered that taking care of myself was also a way of taking care of them.
Finally, I reached the viewpoint for Cachoeira da Fumaça. And it was breathtaking! The water plummets down from an incredible height, and the wind catches it, creating a misty, smoke-like effect – hence the name. The scale of it was just immense, and I stood there for a long time, simply absorbing the view. It was one of those moments that makes you feel incredibly alive and connected to something bigger than yourself. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the magic, but I knew that no image could truly do it justice.
After taking in the views of Cachoeira da Fumaça, I headed towards Vale do Pati. Getting to Vale do Pati required a bit of a detour and some careful navigation. It is a valley that can only be accessed on foot, so I was prepared for more hiking. I made my way towards one of the access points, and as I started my descent into the valley, the landscape transformed once again. The towering cliffs surrounded me, creating a sense of being in a hidden world. The trails here varied from rocky paths to stretches of soft earth, and I was constantly aware of the need to watch my step.

Vale do Pati is known as one of the most beautiful treks in the world, and I could definitely see why. The views were simply spectacular – rolling hills, dramatic rock formations, and glimpses of distant waterfalls. I stopped for lunch at Restaurante Sabor da Serra, enjoying a hearty meal while soaking in the panoramic views. It was a perfect moment of peace and contentment, surrounded by nature's grandeur. While enjoying my lunch, I thought about Hans and how much he would have appreciated the tranquility and beauty of this place. We often talked about escaping the city and finding a place where we could be closer to nature. Maybe someday we could come here together.

The afternoon was spent exploring more of Vale do Pati. I didn't have time to do a full trek, but I hiked as far as I could, enjoying the solitude and the stunning scenery. I passed local houses where people offered lodging and meals to trekkers. I was impressed by their resilience and their deep connection to the land. I also thought about the importance of sustainable tourism and the need to protect this natural paradise for future generations. The weather was quite pleasant, with clear skies and a warm temperature of 24°C, although it felt a bit warmer with the humidity at 77%. I was glad I had packed plenty of water and sunscreen.
As the sun began to set, I started to make my way back, feeling tired but incredibly fulfilled. The hike back was just as beautiful, with the setting sun casting a golden glow over the landscape. I reached my campsite just as darkness fell, grateful for a hot shower and a comfortable bed.
Before heading back to camp for the night, I decided to stop by Quinca's Botequim in Lençóis. It was a great way to unwind after a long day of hiking. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with tourists and locals mingling and enjoying drinks. I tried a local cocktail made with cachaça and fresh fruit – it was delicious! The live music added to the ambiance, and I found myself tapping my feet to the rhythm. It was a perfect way to end the day, surrounded by good company and good vibes. Quinca's Botequim was buzzing with activity, and I quickly understood why it's a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. The colorful setting and friendly atmosphere were incredibly inviting. I sipped on a refreshing caipirinha, enjoying the lively music and the easy camaraderie among the patrons. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As I reflect on the day, I realize that Chapada Diamantina is more than just a beautiful place; it's an experience that touches your soul. It challenges you physically, inspires you creatively, and connects you deeply to the natural world. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Ribeirão do Meio and Gruta do Lapão. I also want to check out Sangue Bom Brechó & Artesanato for some local crafts. I am also very aware that there is limited cellphone reception inside the national park and that rescue operations require special knowledge about the area, so I will make sure to stick to marked paths. I made sure to check the weather forecast before heading out, and it looks like tomorrow will be another beautiful day.
And as I drift off to sleep, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible journey and the opportunity to explore the wonders of Brazil.
