Whispers of Teshima

Today's journey to Teshima Island felt like stepping into another world, a tranquil escape from the more bustling art scenes of Naoshima. The ferry ride itself was a calming prelude, the sea a shimmering expanse under the warm June sun. I was eager to experience the blend of art and nature that Teshima promised, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. Fuelled by a delicious meal, I set off to explore the island's artistic offerings. The first stop was La forêt des murmures (the Teshima Yokoo House), a renovated traditional Japanese house transformed into an immersive art installation. The moment I stepped inside, I was transported into a surreal world where the boundaries between reality and imagination blurred. The artist’s unique vision was palpable in every corner, creating an atmosphere that was both unsettling and deeply moving.

The exhibition featured a series of interconnected rooms, each with its own distinct theme and sensory experience. One room was filled with vibrant, almost psychedelic colors, while another was dimly lit and filled with the sounds of whispering voices. The installations played with light, shadow, and sound, creating a disorienting yet captivating environment. I found myself completely absorbed in the experience, losing track of time as I wandered through the house. It reminded me of some of the immersive art experiences I've explored back in Berlin, but with a distinctly Japanese sensibility.

Afterward, I decided to take a leisurely stroll through the island's picturesque countryside. The landscape was dotted with rice paddies, lush green hills, and traditional Japanese houses. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the sounds of nature. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. It was a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life in Berlin. I even took a moment to sketch some of the scenery in my notebook, trying to capture the essence of this idyllic setting.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

My next destination was the Teshima Art Museum, a place I had been eagerly anticipating since planning this trip. Designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito, the museum is a masterpiece of minimalist architecture. The building itself is a concrete shell that sits atop a hill overlooking the sea. Inside, there is only one artwork: a single drop of water that continuously emerges from the ground and flows across the floor. It sounds simple, but the effect is profound.

As I entered the museum, I was struck by the sheer simplicity and elegance of the space. The natural light that streamed in through the openings in the ceiling created a soft, ethereal glow. The sound of the water was the only sound in the room, creating a sense of serenity and contemplation. I sat on the floor for what felt like hours, watching the water droplet as it moved across the surface. It was a mesmerizing experience, one that allowed me to connect with nature and art in a way I never thought possible. This was exactly the kind of profound experience I was hoping to find on this solo journey.

Leaving the Teshima Art Museum, I felt a renewed sense of calm and clarity. I decided to grab a quick lunch at Issen, a local eatery known for its delicious and authentic Japanese cuisine. I opted for a simple yet satisfying bowl of udon noodles with tempura. The meal was a perfect complement to the day's artistic experiences, providing a taste of local flavor and culture.

In the afternoon, I made my way to Teshima 8 Million Lab, another unique art installation on the island. This project explores the concept of memory and identity through a series of interactive exhibits. The installations invited visitors to reflect on their own experiences and to connect with others through shared memories. It was a thought-provoking and engaging experience that left me pondering the complexities of human consciousness. As someone who spends her days caring for the elderly, the themes of memory and identity resonated deeply with me, adding another layer of meaning to the experience.

As the sun began to set, I found myself at maimai, a local bar, reflecting on the day's adventures over a glass of sake. The bar had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and I struck up a conversation with some of the locals, who were eager to share their stories and insights about the island. It was a reminder of the warmth and hospitality that I've encountered throughout my travels in Japan. Sharing stories and laughter with new friends is one of the greatest joys of traveling solo.

Before heading back to the ferry, I treated myself to dinner at Raumen Tsumu. A comforting bowl of ramen was the perfect way to end a day filled with art and exploration. The rich broth and perfectly cooked noodles were a welcome treat after a long day of walking and contemplating.

As I sit here writing this, I'm already anticipating tomorrow's adventures back on Naoshima. According to my itinerary, I'll be visiting the Naoshima Fishing Park, Danyama, and the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower. It sounds like another day filled with exploration and discovery. I'm especially looking forward to experiencing the natural beauty of Naoshima and perhaps trying my hand at fishing. And of course, I'm eager to sample the local cuisine at NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda for breakfast, Chikurin for lunch, and Café Ippo for dinner.

Reflecting on my time on Teshima, I am struck by the profound impact that art can have on our lives. The installations I experienced today were not just objects to be observed, but rather invitations to engage with the world in new and meaningful ways. They challenged my perceptions, stimulated my imagination, and left me feeling deeply moved. As I continue my journey through Naoshima and the surrounding islands, I am excited to see what other artistic discoveries await. This solo trip has been a true immersion into the world of art, and I am grateful for every moment.

I also realized today that I really need to get a power adapter. It would be nice to charge my phone at night without having to get up at 3 AM to unplug it. I also wish I had brought my travel journal. I think I will pick one up tomorrow when I'm back on Naoshima.
