A Day of Florentine Delights

Today was all about immersing myself in the bustling heart of Florence, a city that continues to surprise and captivate me at every turn. From the lively markets filled with local crafts and delicious treats to the solemn grandeur of the Medici Chapels, it was a day of contrasts, each experience adding another layer to my understanding of this incredible city.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Gilli. The café was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a dose of caffeine and a sweet pastry. I opted for a cappuccino and a *sfoglia*, a flaky pastry filled with sweet cream. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the simple pleasures in life. The ambiance of the cafe was amazing [It is beautiful and grand, but there are enough local people hanging out there to make you feel like you are still experiencing a piece of modern Florence.].

Next up was the Mercato del Porcellino. The market was bustling with activity. As I approached the famous Fontana del Porcellino, the bronze boar statue, I couldn't resist rubbing its snout – legend has it that doing so guarantees a return trip to Florence. I tossed a coin into the fountain's grate, hoping the legend holds true. I spent some time browsing the stalls, admiring the leather goods and souvenirs. Although I didn't buy anything, I enjoyed soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of the market. According to one of the reviews, the leather goods are of good quality [Bought a beautiful leather messenger bag at Mercanto del Porcellino this June. I knew this market had well made leather goods and the vendors were not pushy.].

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simple act of wandering, observing, and connecting with the spirit of a place.

From there, I strolled over to Piazza di San Lorenzo, where the Cappelle Medicee, or Medici Chapels, awaited. The piazza itself was alive with activity, vendors setting up stalls, and the general hum of Florentine life. It's amazing to see how the locals go about their daily lives.

The Cappelle Medicee proved to be an awe-inspiring experience. The sheer opulence of the Chapel of the Princes left me speechless. The intricate marble inlays and semi-precious stones created a dazzling display of wealth and power. It was fascinating to learn about the Medici family and their influence on Florence's history and culture. I descended into the crypt, the final resting place of the Medici Grand Dukes. The atmosphere was somber and reverent, a stark contrast to the extravagance of the chapel above. It was a humbling experience to stand in the presence of such historical figures, contemplating their lives and legacies. According to feel Florence, the crypt is accessed through a new entrance, inaugurated in 2023 [The Museum is accessed through a new entrance, inaugurated in 2023, which leads to the Crypt, where some of the tombs of the Medici sovereigns and their families are located, and where part of the Treasure of San Lorenzo is on display.].

After immersing myself in the world of the Medici, I was ready for a culinary adventure. I headed to Club Culinario Toscano da Osvaldo for lunch. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a menu featuring traditional Tuscan dishes. I decided to try the *pappardelle al ragù di cinghiale*, a hearty pasta dish with wild boar sauce. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was rich and flavorful. It was the perfect comfort food on a chilly winter day. As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to a truly special dining experience at Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura for dinner. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a menu that blended traditional Italian flavors with modern culinary techniques. I opted for the tasting menu, which featured a selection of the chef's signature dishes. Each course was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly delicious. It was a meal that I will never forget. To cap off the evening, I ventured to Mad - Souls & Spirits, a local bar known for its creative cocktails and lively atmosphere. The bar was packed with people, and the energy was infectious. I ordered a cocktail recommended by the bartender, a concoction of gin, elderflower liqueur, and grapefruit juice. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Florence. I thought about Hans and how much he would have enjoyed seeing the Chapel of the Princes. He's always been fascinated by history, and I know he would have appreciated the artistry and craftsmanship that went into creating such a magnificent space. Maybe one day I'll bring him here, and we can explore Florence together. I also thought about my work. Sometimes I feel like being a geriatric nurse is a thankless job, but then I remember the smiles on my patients' faces when I'm able to make their day a little bit brighter. That's what keeps me going.

Tomorrow is my last day in Florence, and I plan to make the most of it. I'll be visiting the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, the Giardino Bardini, and the Bargello National Museum. I'm also hoping to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique. I want to bring back something special for Hans and my family in Vietnam.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for tomorrow's adventures. Florence, you have been a dream come true. Although I miss Berlin, I know I will be back in Germany soon. I am excited to see Hans and tell him all about my trip.
