Ciao, Firenze! A Final Day of Discovery

As my Florentine adventure draws to a close, I'm filled with a mix of emotions. There's a tinge of sadness that my time in this captivating city is ending, but also an immense sense of gratitude for all the incredible experiences I've had. Today was all about soaking in those last moments, venturing off the beaten path, and savoring the flavors of Florence one last time.

My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Gilli. Established in 1733, Gilli is Florence's oldest café, a true Florentine institution where tradition and sophistication blend seamlessly. I savored a cappuccino and a freshly baked pastry, watching the city awaken around me. It was the perfect way to start a day dedicated to exploring the lesser-known treasures of Florence. I learned that the café is famous for the Negroni cocktail, which has a history closely tied to Florence. I made a mental note to try it next time.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

My first stop was the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, perched high on a hill overlooking Florence. I took a taxi to Piazzale Michelangelo and then walked the rest of the way. The basilica is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, with its striking green and white marble facade. The views from the top were simply breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the entire city. Inside, I was mesmerized by the intricate mosaics and the serene atmosphere. It was a peaceful escape from the bustling city below. I also explored the adjacent cemetery, Cimitero delle Porte Sante, a city of the dead filled with impressive monuments and sculptures. The basilica's strategic position during the siege of Florence in 1530 was interesting to learn.

Next, I ventured to Giardino Bardini, a hidden gem of a garden offering another stunning perspective of Florence. The garden is divided into three different areas: the rural part, the baroque staircase, and the English garden. Even in January, the garden had a certain charm, with its evergreen trees and unique botanical collections. I wandered through the grounds, enjoying the tranquility and the stunning views of the city. I read that the gardens occupy most of the hill that rises from the Arno River to the gate of San Giorgio and Forte Belvedere. I could imagine how beautiful it would be in the spring when the flowers are in full bloom.

For lunch, I headed to Coquinarius, a charming bistro in the heart of the city. The restaurant combines Tuscan tradition with innovation, and I was eager to try their creative dishes. I opted for the cheese and pear ravioli, which came highly recommended, and it was absolutely divine. The combination of flavors was unexpected but delightful. I also enjoyed a glass of local wine, savoring the flavors of Tuscany. The bistrot is known for offering a sensorial journey with its flavors, scents, and stories, and I could tell that it was true.

In the afternoon, I immersed myself in the world of Renaissance art at the Bargello National Museum. Housed in one of the oldest public buildings in Florence, the Bargello is home to an impressive collection of sculptures by masters such as Donatello, Michelangelo, and Verrocchio. I was particularly captivated by Donatello's David and Michelangelo's Bacchus, marveling at the skill and artistry of these iconic works. I also learned that the palace was once used as a prison for centuries. The Bargello's rich collections incorporate weapons, seals, fabrics, waxes, enamels, paintings, ivories, and majolica.

Before dinner, I did some last-minute souvenir shopping at Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique. I had been searching for a high-quality leather wallet, and I was impressed by the craftsmanship and selection at this boutique. I found the perfect wallet, a beautiful reminder of my time in Florence. It's nice to support local artisans and bring home a piece of authentic Italian craftsmanship.

My Florentine adventure culminated with a farewell dinner at Il Latini, a traditional Tuscan trattoria known for its hearty cuisine and lively atmosphere. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to experience the authentic flavors of Florence. I ordered the Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a massive Florentine steak cooked to perfection. It was a carnivore's dream, tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The communal tables and the friendly atmosphere made it a memorable dining experience. I read that the restaurant is famous for hanging Parma hams and that the owner is very persuasive when it comes to traditional Florentine food.

As I savored my last bite of steak and sipped my wine, I reflected on my week in Florence. It had been a journey of discovery, filled with art, history, culture, and delicious food. I had wandered through cobblestone streets, climbed to breathtaking viewpoints, and immersed myself in the vibrant atmosphere of this Renaissance city. Florence had captured my heart, and I knew I would return someday to explore its hidden corners and relive its magic.

Though my time in Florence has come to an end, the memories and experiences will stay with me forever. It's time to pack my bags, say goodbye to this enchanting city, and prepare for my journey back to Berlin. Until next time, Firenze! Ciao!

My solo trip to Florence has been nothing short of transformative. As a geriatric nurse from Berlin, I often find myself caught up in the routine of daily life. This journey was a chance to break free, to reconnect with my love for art and culture, and to discover new perspectives. It reminded me of the importance of taking time for oneself, of exploring the world, and of embracing new experiences.

As I prepare to return to my life in Berlin with Hans, I feel refreshed and inspired. I'm eager to share my stories and insights with my friends, family, and colleagues, and to encourage them to embark on their own adventures. Florence has left an indelible mark on my soul, and I know that its beauty and spirit will continue to inspire me for years to come.
