Family Eco-Adventure in Fernando de Noronha
Day 7: Discovering Noronha's Wild Side: Raquel's Hole and Island Views
Exploring Fernando de Noronha's rugged beauty: from the mythical Mirante Buraco da Raquel to the island's stunning, panoramic vistas.
Whispers of the Island
Today was a day of legends and landscapes, where the raw beauty of Ilha de Fernando de Noronha truly captivated us. We ventured to the island's edge, seeking out stories etched in stone and views that stretched beyond the horizon. It was a day to connect with the wilder side of this paradise, away from the sandy beaches, and to discover the tales whispered by the wind.
Our morning started, as usual, with a delightful breakfast at Restaurante Abençoado. It's becoming a lovely ritual to fuel up with local flavors before heading out to explore. Sofia, in particular, loves the fresh fruit platters, and Lena and I appreciate the strong, locally sourced coffee. It sets the perfect tone for a day of adventure. We made sure to pack our reusable water bottles and slather on the eco-friendly sunscreen – essentials for a day under the Brazilian sun. I did have a momentary pang of regret for forgetting the insect repellent, but I hoped the ocean breeze would keep the little critters away.
Raquel's Hole: A Glimpse into Island Lore
Our first stop was Mirante Buraco da Raquel, a place shrouded in local legends. The 'hole' itself is a fascinating rock formation with a gap in the middle, creating natural pools around it. The most popular legend says that Raquel was the daughter of a military commander who would seek refuge in the area to meet her lovers. Another version says she used the rock formation for meditation. It's easy to see why this spot is so special. The views are breathtaking, with the waves crashing against the rocks and the endless ocean stretching out before you. Sadly, access to the beach itself is prohibited nowadays, as it's become an important marine nursery.

Sofia was absolutely captivated by the story of Raquel. She kept asking questions about her life and loves, her imagination running wild with the possibilities. It was a wonderful opportunity to talk about the island's history and the importance of preserving its natural environment. Lena, ever the architect, was fascinated by the geological formations, pointing out the different layers of rock and explaining how the hole was formed over centuries by the relentless power of the sea.
The sea is a story without end, a constant source of wonder and discovery.
After soaking in the views and the legends of Mirante Buraco da Raquel, we decided to explore the island a bit more. We hopped on a local bus – a surprisingly efficient and eco-friendly way to get around – and headed towards the center of Fernando de Noronha.
Island Views and Culinary Delights
Our next destination was simply listed as Ilha de Fernando de Noronha, which felt a bit redundant, but it was more an opportunity to explore various viewpoints and hidden corners of the island. We drove around, stopping at various mirantes (viewpoints) to take in the panoramic vistas. Each spot offered a unique perspective, from the rugged coastline to the lush green interior. We even spotted a few seabirds soaring overhead, their calls echoing in the wind. I made a mental note to buy Sofia a bird guidebook; her interest in the local wildlife is truly inspiring.
All that fresh air and sightseeing worked up quite an appetite, so we decided to stop for lunch at Restaurante Cacimba Bistrô. The reviews I had read online were promising, and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of fresh seafood dishes. I opted for the grilled fish with tropical salsa, while Lena chose the lobster risotto. Sofia, of course, went for the classic 'fritas' (fries), but she did try a bite of my fish and declared it 'delicioso!'

After lunch, we couldn't resist a bit of shopping at Santacosta - Noronha. I was hoping to find a replacement memory card for my camera – I seem to be filling them up faster than I anticipated! Lena was on the lookout for some locally made crafts, and Sofia was, naturally, drawn to the colorful souvenirs. We ended up buying a few small gifts for friends back home and, yes, a new memory card for my camera. Crisis averted!

Sunset Reflections and Evening Indulgence
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Palhoça da Colina Bar e Restaurante for dinner. This place came highly recommended for its unique atmosphere and traditional Brazilian cuisine. The setting was truly special, with tables set on cushions around a low platform, lit by candlelight. It felt intimate and inviting, encouraging conversation and connection. The food was delicious, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. We tried a variety of dishes, from grilled fish to hearty stews, all bursting with flavor.

Sofia, surprisingly, was on her best behavior, engaging in conversation with the other diners and even trying some of the more adventurous dishes. Lena and I savored the moment, enjoying the delicious food, the warm atmosphere, and the company of our adventurous little girl. It was the perfect end to a day of exploration and discovery.
As we walked back to Pousada Alto da Floresta under the starlit sky, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Fernando de Noronha is more than just a beautiful island; it's a place that awakens the senses, inspires the imagination, and connects us to the natural world. And sharing it with my family makes it all the more special.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Mirante Ponta do capim açu and Praia do Bode. I've heard that Praia do Bode is particularly stunning, with crystal-clear waters and golden sand. I'm also looking forward to trying Mergulhão Noronha for breakfast; their menu looks amazing. Until then, boa noite from Fernando de Noronha!
It's moments like these, surrounded by family and the beauty of nature, that remind me why we travel. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about creating memories, connecting with each other, and appreciating the world around us.
Thinking about our day, I'm also reminded of the importance of sustainable tourism. Fernando de Noronha is a fragile ecosystem, and it's our responsibility to protect it. By choosing eco-friendly accommodations, supporting local businesses, and minimizing our impact on the environment, we can help ensure that this paradise remains pristine for generations to come. It's a small price to pay for the privilege of experiencing such incredible beauty.
