Kyoto's Calm and Colorful Side

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the serene beauty of Kyoto's gardens and shrines with the vibrant, modern world of manga. Greta and I set out to explore a different facet of this city, one that balances tradition with contemporary culture. It's amazing how much Kyoto has to offer, and I'm excited to share our experiences.

We began our day with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Chihana. The delicate flavors and meticulous presentation were a feast for both the eyes and the palate. It was a quiet, contemplative start to what promised to be a busy day. The restaurant itself was so inviting, and it definitely set the tone for a day of cultural immersion. I remember thinking how different this was from my usual rushed breakfasts back in Heidelberg – a reminder to slow down and savor the moment.

Our first stop was the Heian Shrine. The crisp January air nipped at our cheeks, but the clear skies promised a beautiful day. The shrine's vibrant vermilion architecture stood out against the winter landscape, creating a striking visual. The vast courtyard offered a sense of peace and tranquility, a welcome respite from the bustling city outside. As we wandered through the gardens, I couldn't help but marvel at the meticulous landscaping, even in the dormant winter months. I tried to capture the essence of the scene with my camera, hoping to convey the sense of timeless beauty that permeated the air. Although the cherry blossoms were still months away, I could imagine how stunning this place must be in spring. The shrine was not too crowded, and the weather was clear and cold. It was a good time to visit the shrine because there were not a lot of tourists.

Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Despite it being January, the gardens were far from barren. The conservatory, in particular, was a tropical paradise, a warm and humid escape from the winter chill. Greta was in her element here, pointing out various exotic plants and flowers, her architectural eye appreciating the intricate designs of the greenhouse structure. I was fascinated by the sheer diversity of plant life, from towering palms to delicate orchids. We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the different sections, each offering a unique sensory experience. The alpine room was also quite nice, and the night creatures section was calming.

After a morning of serene exploration, we were ready for lunch. We chose Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto-style dishes. The lunch was fantastic. The restaurant specialized in crafting set meals made with fresh fish and seasonal local vegetables. They also offered an Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option. The pumpkin, taro root, bean curd lees, and hijiki seaweed matched well with rice. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals enjoying a midday meal. I opted for a set meal featuring seasonal vegetables and grilled fish, while Greta chose the obanzai buffet, eager to sample a variety of Kyoto's local flavors. The food was simple but delicious, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chefs. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home.

In the afternoon, we ventured into the world of Japanese pop culture at the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Housed in a former elementary school, the museum was a treasure trove of manga history and artistry. As a software developer, I'm always intrigued by the intersection of technology and art, and manga represents a unique blend of both. I was impressed by the sheer volume of the collection, spanning decades of manga history. We spent hours browsing the shelves, discovering new artists and revisiting old favorites. I even found a few volumes in English, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The museum also featured exhibits on the history and development of manga, which included original artwork by famous authors. The museum also has a room of plaster casts of the hands of manga and anime artists who have visited the museum, an exhibition of 100 maiko illustrations by various artists, a hanging sculpture of Tezuka Osamu's Hi no Tori character, and an exhibition called What is Manga? that features influential manga published between 1912 and 2005. There was also a room dedicated to kamishibai, a traditional Japanese storytelling format that uses a combination of characterful narration and hand-drawn paper cards. I was able to read manga in the courtyard outside. They also have a children's library and performances of kamishibai.

Before dinner, we indulged in a bit of shopping at the Daimaru Kyoto Store. Greta was on the hunt for some unique Japanese crafts, while I was more interested in browsing the electronics section. The department store was a bustling hive of activity, filled with shoppers eager to snag a bargain. We explored the various floors, marveling at the array of goods on offer, from high-end fashion to local delicacies. Greta eventually found a beautiful hand-painted fan, while I picked up a new portable charger – a must-have for any tech-savvy traveler. The store had a wide variety of products including snacks, liquor, food, cosmetics, men's and women's clothing, baby and kids products, electronic and digital devices, accessories, jewelry, and watches.

For our final meal of the day, we dined at Fujiya. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, a perfect setting for a special occasion. The restaurant offered a modern take on traditional Japanese cuisine, with innovative dishes that showcased the chef's creativity and skill. I opted for the tasting menu, eager to sample a variety of flavors and textures. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and expertly prepared. The meal was a culinary journey, a fitting end to a day of cultural exploration. The mushroom soup was remarkable, and the chestnut bread with bubbles was very light. The saury was cooked well, and the free range chicken was delicious. It was a calming room that was very different from the busy main street.

As we walked back to our ryokan, the streets of Kyoto were quiet and peaceful. The day's experiences swirled in my mind, a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and flavors. From the serene beauty of Heian Shrine to the vibrant energy of the Manga Museum, Kyoto had once again surprised and delighted us. I am looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to explore Gion, Yasaka Shrine, and Hanamikoji Street. I’m particularly excited about the prospect of spotting a geisha in the Gion district. We also plan to visit Kyoto Star Bar.

Tonight, as I write this, I feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible city.
