Exploring the Depths of Peru: A Colca Canyon Trek Adventure
Day 13: A Day of Serenity and Local Flavors in the Colca Canyon
Discover the serene landscapes of Colca, savor local cuisine, and unwind with artisanal drinks. A perfect blend of relaxation and culture.
Finding Peace in the Valley
Today was a day of gentle exploration and quiet reflection in the Colca Canyon. After several days of intense trekking, Greta and I decided to slow down, soak in the scenery, and enjoy the local culture at a more relaxed pace. It was a welcome change, and honestly, exactly what we needed to recharge before our final day of exploration.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Granja del Colca. The views from the restaurant were absolutely stunning, perched right on the edge of the canyon. We enjoyed fresh, organic food while watching the condors soar in the distance. It was a peaceful start, and the organic produce was a treat. I even managed to snap a few photos of the alpacas roaming nearby, much to Greta's amusement, who thinks I'm turning into a full-time wildlife photographer.

After breakfast, we took a leisurely stroll around Huarancante. It’s a small village, but full of charm and authenticity. The locals were incredibly welcoming, and we spent some time observing their daily routines, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Heidelberg. I found myself pondering the simple, yet fulfilling lives they lead, so different from my own back in Germany. I guess that's the beauty of travel, isn't it? It forces you to re-evaluate your own life and appreciate the things you often take for granted.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering mountains, but in savoring the quiet moments and connecting with the local spirit.
For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Incafe. It was a cozy spot, and we tried some traditional Peruvian dishes. Greta, ever the adventurous foodie, ordered the Chupe de Camarones, a local shrimp soup. I opted for something a bit more familiar, Lomo Saltado, which was fantastic. We chatted with the owner, who shared stories about his family and the history of the restaurant. It’s these personal connections that make traveling so rewarding. He told us about Pachamanca, a traditional Andean dish made with marinated meats, potatoes and vegetables cooked underground using hot stones.

As the afternoon waned, we found ourselves in Chivay, the largest town in the Colca Canyon. For dinner, we chose Restaurante Turístico Q'apaqñan. The restaurant offered a buffet, and while some reviews online were mixed, we found the food to be quite good. I particularly enjoyed the alpaca ribs, a local specialty. The atmosphere was lively, filled with other travelers and locals alike. It was a great way to end the day, sharing stories and laughter over a delicious meal. I must admit, the altitude was starting to get to me a bit, but a cup of coca tea helped to ease the discomfort.

To cap off our relaxing day, we decided to visit 13 Monjas. It’s a bar known for its artisanal beers and natural wines. The place had a unique vibe, a blend of local and international influences. Greta enjoyed a glass of natural wine, while I sampled a local craft beer. We sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air and reflecting on our journey so far. We reminisced about our wedding day, and how we promised each other to always seek adventures together. It's moments like these that remind me how lucky I am to have Greta by my side.

As we head into our final day here in Colca Canyon, I'm already feeling a tinge of sadness that this adventure is coming to an end. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Tradicion Colca and A Colca Tours. We’ll also have breakfast at Restaurant Alpaca Chef, lunch at Curiña Restaurant, and a farewell dinner at Kuntur Wassi Colca Hotel. Before heading to the airport, Greta wants to do some shopping at EKEKOS SAN BLAS -art & COLORS, hopefully to find some unique souvenirs.
This trip has been an incredible experience, and I'm grateful for every moment. I'm also grateful that I didn't forget the travel journal this time, unlike that one trip to the Black Forest. I’m looking forward to sharing more stories and photos when we return to Heidelberg. Until then, good night from the Colca Canyon!
I'm already looking forward to planning our next adventure, maybe somewhere closer to home. I've been reading about some amazing hiking trails in the Odenwald Forest, and I think Greta would love them. Plus, it would give me a chance to practice my German even more.
