Farewell, Colca Canyon!

As our incredible journey through the Colca Canyon draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment, having explored one of the world's deepest canyons, but also a touch of sadness as we prepare to leave this breathtaking landscape behind. Today was all about savoring those last moments, soaking in the vibrant culture, and reflecting on the amazing experiences we've shared.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Alpaca Chef in Yanque. The reviews I had read online mentioned the stunning views, and they certainly didn't disappoint. As we ate, we were treated to a panoramic vista of the surrounding mountains and countryside. I opted for the Alpaca Soltado, wanting to try one last local dish, while Greta enjoyed the green noodles with the orange-looking sauce. Fuelled up, we set out to make the most of our last day in the canyon.

The end of a journey is not the end of the adventure, but the beginning of its memory.

First on our agenda was a visit to Tradicion Colca, also in Yanque. This place is more than just a hotel; it's an experience. With its beautiful gardens and inviting atmosphere, it felt like a perfect spot to unwind and reflect. We explored the grounds, admiring the rural setting and the views of the mountains. I learned that Tradicion Colca offers horseback riding excursions to nearby archaeological sites, as well as access to a planetarium and astronomical observatory. Although we didn't have time to participate, it certainly added to the charm of the place.

Next, we decided to explore the local artisan scene. We headed to EKEKOS SAN BLAS -art & COLORS, where we browsed through a variety of handcrafted goods. I was on the hunt for a unique souvenir to remind us of our trip, and Greta was keen on finding some authentic Peruvian textiles. The shop was filled with colorful and intricate pieces, showcasing the talent of local artisans. We ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-woven wall hanging, depicting scenes from Andean life. It’s always a great feeling to support local craftsmanship, and I know this piece will find a special place in our home in Heidelberg.

For lunch, we opted for Curiña Restaurant, drawn in by its promise of indigenous cooking styles and ingredients harvested straight from their orchard. The setting was beautiful, and the food was delicious. I savored a native stew, while Greta enjoyed marinated meats with purple corn. The flavors were unique and authentic, giving us a true taste of the Andes. We finished our meal with the chef's signature dessert: fresh cheese drizzled with local mountain honey. It was the perfect way to end our culinary exploration of the Colca Canyon.

In the afternoon, we visited A Colca Tours, hoping to glean some more insights into the canyon's history and culture. We learned about the various trekking routes, the local flora and fauna, and the traditions of the people who call this place home. It was fascinating to hear stories passed down through generations, and it gave us a deeper appreciation for the canyon's significance.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Kuntur Wassi Colca Hotel in Cabanaconde for our farewell dinner. The hotel is known for its commitment to sustainable tourism, working in harmony with the local community and environment. The Kuntur Wassi also uses solar panels for water heating and promotes recycling and energy reduction. Dinner was a delightful affair, with a menu featuring fresh, local ingredients. I savored every bite, knowing it was our last meal in this magical place. As we ate, we reflected on the incredible experiences we've had over the past two weeks: the challenging but rewarding trek, the stunning landscapes, the vibrant culture, and the warm hospitality of the Peruvian people. The hotel even has an ISO 9001 certification.

The weather in Colca Canyon in October is generally mild, with moderate temperatures. Daily high temperatures are around 71°F, and daily low temperatures are around 48°F. The chance of a wet day is increasing throughout the month. We were fortunate to have mostly sunny days, with only a few brief showers. October is also known for increasing cloud cover.

As I write this, sitting in our cozy hotel room, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible adventure. The Colca Canyon has captured our hearts, and we'll cherish the memories we've made here forever. From the depths of the canyon to the heights of the Andes, this journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. And while our Colca Canyon adventure ends here, our travels are far from over.

I'm already looking forward to sharing more stories and experiences from our future adventures. Until then, thank you for joining us on this unforgettable journey through Peru's Colca Canyon!

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home to Germany, filled with memories and souvenirs. It’s always a bittersweet feeling, leaving a place that has captured your heart, but I know we’ll carry the spirit of the Colca Canyon with us wherever we go. Back in Heidelberg, I'm sure I'll be inspired to try some Peruvian recipes in my own kitchen, perhaps even brewing a batch of craft beer with a hint of Andean flavors. Greta, with her architect's eye, will no doubt incorporate some of the canyon's unique designs and textures into her future projects. And as we settle back into our routine, we'll always have the memories of our Colca Canyon trek to remind us of the beauty and adventure that awaits us in the world.

The local markets in Colca Canyon, such as the Chivay Market and the Macahua Market, offer a wide selection of handicrafts, textiles, pottery, souvenirs, and items made from alpaca wool. The textiles, with their vivid hues and distinctive patterns, are particularly popular. Local artisans use age-old methods to create handmade textiles, and soft, warm alpaca products are also available.

Before heading to the market, I had read about a clothing store in Chivay called Made In Colca, which showcases Andean culture through its garments and accessories. The store offers traditional textiles and modern designs infused with cultural motifs. Visitors can find colorful sweaters, ponchos, and handwoven bags.

I also learned that October in Coporaque has moderate temperatures, with maximum daytime temperatures around 15°C and minimum nighttime temperatures around -0°C. In Cabanaconde, you can expect mild maximum daytime temperatures of around 16°C and nighttime temperatures around 1°C.

As we prepare to leave, I am reminded of the importance of sustainable tourism. The Colca Canyon is a fragile ecosystem, and it's crucial that we all do our part to protect it. By supporting local businesses, respecting the environment, and being mindful of our impact, we can ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty of this incredible place. I am proud that we chose accommodations and tours that prioritize sustainability, and I encourage all travelers to do the same.

The trek through the Colca Canyon has been more than just a physical challenge; it's been a journey of discovery, connection, and reflection. I've learned about the history, culture, and ecology of this unique region, and I've gained a deeper appreciation for the resilience and spirit of the Peruvian people. I've also learned a lot about myself, pushing my limits and discovering a newfound sense of confidence and resilience. And perhaps most importantly, I've strengthened my bond with Greta, sharing unforgettable experiences and creating memories that will last a lifetime. As we pack our bags and prepare to say goodbye, I know that a part of us will always remain in the Colca Canyon.

I am already planning our next adventure, perhaps a trek through the Amazon rainforest or a visit to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. But no matter where our travels take us, I will always remember the Colca Canyon as a place of unparalleled beauty, cultural richness, and transformative experiences. It's a place that has challenged me, inspired me, and changed me in ways I never could have imagined. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

Until next time, keep exploring, keep discovering, and keep sharing your stories with the world! Safe travels!

While we didn’t spot any condors today, I’m grateful that we had the chance to see them earlier in the trip. The Colca Canyon is one of the best places in South America to see these magnificent birds in flight, and witnessing their soaring presence was truly awe-inspiring. The Cruz del Condor viewpoint is a popular spot for condor watching, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the canyon.

One thing I wish we hadn't forgotten to pack was a portable solar charger. While many of the accommodations had electricity, it would have been useful to have a backup power source for our electronic devices, especially during the trek. An extra memory card for the camera would also have been helpful, as we quickly filled up our existing ones with all the stunning photos we took.

I also learned that the Colca Canyon has two seasons: a wet season from December to March and a dry season for the rest of the year. The transition periods, November to April, can still have rain, but days start to brighten up. The sun is strong due to the altitude, so solar radiation is a factor to keep in mind. Night temperatures can drop significantly.

I’m glad we chose to visit during the dry season, as the weather was generally pleasant for hiking. However, it’s important to be prepared for all types of conditions, as the weather in the mountains can change quickly. Warm clothing is essential, as temperatures can drop significantly at night. Hiking boots are a must for the trek, and camping gear is necessary if you plan to camp in the canyon. A camera is essential for capturing the stunning landscapes, and a travel journal is a great way to record your experiences.

Our journey through the Colca Canyon has come to an end, but the memories we've made here will last a lifetime. From the depths of the canyon to the heights of the Andes, this has been an adventure of a lifetime. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey!
